Humanity has used lighting for millennia to chase away encroaching darkness, to increase the power of narrative, and to enhance the appeal and mood in crafted en-vironments. Theater, cinema, and architecture, among other fields, have developed, applied, and refined concepts of using light as a directed tool, but the relatively young field of virtual reality has not yet developed rigorous conventions. This thesis doc-ument describes work in investigating, developing, and applying designs for lighting conventions in virtual reality. Traditional artwork, photography, cinema, video-game, and environment lighting are considered and used to extrapolate concepts for lighting within virtual-reality applications. The developed …

Journey to Proxima Centauri is an immersive VR experience where the user takes on the role of a special operative sent to uncover the mystery of the missing androids. The experience design is inspired by Disney Imagineering, and the experience story is inspired by the early 20th century adventures of Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic journey. We explore what it means to be human and what the value of life is through immersive storytelling. The production of this experience spanned over 9 months and involved the talents of 18 people. Stereoscopic content, when presented well, provides an exciting and entertaining experience for viewers. The advent of new techniques and technologies is helping stereoscopy to become more commonplace, with 3D movies becoming a staple at theaters around the world. Further, 3D televisions and content are poised to experience tremendous growth in the coming years. Even video games are exploring 3D content, with recent releases like Toy Story Mania as seen on the Disney website [Disn11].
