Theses and Dissertations
The sensation of detachment and reclusion frequently gives rise to an uncanny and dreamlike space. Enveloped within this dimension, the quirks of memory become a fragile lifeline to bygone, intangible ideas of reality. Fixated on this threshold, my artistic explorations in print, collage, and assemblage navigates these elusive realms, rendering fragmented and distant shapes and figures in stark contrast to elements that evoke an eerie sense of familiarity. In this manner, my work invites viewers to embrace the disconcerting and unsettling aspects of the in-between, all the while establishing an unsettling connection to reality through the lens of nostalgic objects …

Movies are very influential. They provide enjoyable entertainment and affect the viewer's brain and how it processes the scenes, characters, and plot. Because these processes are often the direct result of the script, the screenwriter needs to understand the effect the camera shots, lighting, pacing, and other techniques have on cognition. The narrative is the script's backbone and a movie's primary source of influence. Movies' effects on the viewer will be discussed through current research and different techniques and narrative examples, as seen in well-known movies and original screenplay. Because movies are so influential, the screenwriter will understand how to …
The Joy Of Watching The Film Arrival With Whitehead And O’Donohue, Tricia Mayer
The Joy Of Watching The Film Arrival With Whitehead And O’Donohue, Tricia Mayer
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This paper offers a discussion of the film Arrival that is situated in the perspective of philosophers Alfred North Whitehead and John O’Donohue. The themes discussed include language, communication, context, time, and reality and includes a speculative perspective that the philosophers may have contributed to interpretation of the film’s meaning. It concludes with a view of the relevance of the film in light of current technology advances in artificial intelligence and with the authors own reflection on how this film is relevant to her current research inquiry on the topic of joy
Perception Is Reality! How Perception Shapes Our World., Nicole Clay
Perception Is Reality! How Perception Shapes Our World., Nicole Clay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of the role different photography techniques play in how images are perceived. There have existed techniques for manipulating the perception of images since the creation of the camera. The techniques examined in this paper are editing, staging, and the use of captions. In recent years, perception has become a powerful tool for political parties to manipulate. This manipulation of perception has led to an increasing distrust in the images the media presents to the public. This paper does not seek to answer any questions but to encourage people to have a greater understanding of photography.

Satoshi Kon is a Japanese film director known for incorporating the blurring of the line between reality and fantasy in his works. This study covers his works Perfect Blue, Paprika, and Paranoia Agent. It aims to analyze these films from a cinematic perspective while connecting the analysis to the medical definitions of psychosis and dissociative identity disorder. The study utilizes Gilles Deleuze's film theory, which explores the coexistence and interplay of the virtual, actual, and blurring lines between them. The researchers use the qualitative method of content analysis to show how Kon's works obscure the line between reality and fantasy …
Play Area Utilization Optimization For Room-Scale Exploration Of Virtual Worlds, Chase Vanderzwan
Play Area Utilization Optimization For Room-Scale Exploration Of Virtual Worlds, Chase Vanderzwan
Master's Theses
Virtual Reality (VR) opens up new possibilities for developers to create immersive worlds and experiences. While it’s possible to craft unique and engaging interactive environments with unprecedented realism, the virtual world is constrained by the real one. Current approaches to player navigation in VR applications include joystick controls, teleportation, and motion-based movement. While these methods are effective in certain scenarios to overcome real-world limitations, my research introduces a novel approach that leverages room scale-based movement, with portals, to traverse a given VR world. This work presents algorithms that accurately predict the percentage of play area utilized, and rules to implement …
Dissociation, Chaimae Oualid
Dissociation, Chaimae Oualid
be Still
"Dissociation," is a reflection of the world's struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it has affected us all in ways we never could have imagined.
Through this painting, I wanted to capture the gradual, yet drastic change in emotions, lifestyles, and perception of reality that we experienced during this time. The crowd of people depicted in the painting represents the collective struggle we faced, all facing towards the unknown and moving towards it. The different facial expressions convey the range of emotions we felt during this time, from fear and worry to resilience and hope.
For me, the pandemic …
Enlightenment, Chaimae Oualid
Enlightenment, Chaimae Oualid
be Still
In my painting titled "Enlightenment", I aim to capture the journey towards self-awareness and self-growth, which is often chaotic and filled with struggles.
The painting portrays the internal turmoil that we experience during this journey through a spectrum of colors. Each color represents a different phase of the journey, and the chaos and struggle are evident in the mixture of colors. However, as the journey progresses, the colors gradually shift towards a serene blue and blue hues, representing the final phase of enlightenment. This transformation is depicted in a pair of eyes that reflect a sense of clarity and understanding. …

L’Inadéquation Du Rêve À La Réalité Dans Madame Bovary (1857) De Gustave Flaubert, Abderrahim Bentai
Dirassat
The protagonist of Madame Bovary, namely Emma, a dreamy and romantic woman, will experience a bitter failure, as her marriage to Charles Bovary, a mediocre health officer, will bring her a procession of disappointments and disillusions. The radiant life she has long dreamed of alongside a wealthy and elegant husband turns into a mediocre and monotonous life with Charles, but also the inhabitants of her village, mostly uncultivated and narrow-minded peasants.

Deconstructing And Decolonizing Identities Of “Gender” And “Sex” When Viewed As Anti-Black: Black Narratives Outside Of The Binary, Didier Salgado
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
How is “Reality” experienced in the Black body? Is “Reality” an objective article which is outside of the realm of personal experience? Assigned sex is often assumed an objective biological phenomenon that exists everywhere and in all communities. Gender is often thought about as a socially constructed form of identity which is expressed in various ways. In this thesis, I critically examine the terror of “reality” on the Black body, looking at the ways that Black people who’ve experienced discomfort with gender and sex categories experience the “world” around them. Diving deeply into their own experiences and the meanings they …
The Little City Of Louis-Benoît Picard: The Turning Point From Illusion To Disappointment, Ahmad Al-Btoush
The Little City Of Louis-Benoît Picard: The Turning Point From Illusion To Disappointment, Ahmad Al-Btoush
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study aims to clarify the concept of illusion and try to explain the interplay between appearance and truth in an attempt to highlight the transformation of illusion into disappointment in Louis-Benoît Picard’s 1801 play The Little City. Picard’s heroes, as in almost all of his dramatic works, oscillate between two situations: the inherited and preconceived appearance (illusion) and the discovered and experienced reality (disappointment). This may be a constant doubt about the reality of appearances. This article attempts to explain these two positions established by the playwright in the play so that this duality pushes us to concretize our …

My work explores the narrative I have with family in relation to who I am and how I have developed as a result of both positive and negative influences. Despite the dysfunctional dynamics that I experience with my family, I choose to remain connected to them and continue to endure and persevere through the obstacles that they create. I particularly experience these moments through …
A Framework For Studying Consciousness, Jeremy Horne
A Framework For Studying Consciousness, Jeremy Horne
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
Scholars have wrestled with "consciousness", one writer calling it the "hard problem". Some thirty-plus years after the Towards a Science of Consciousness, we do not seem to be any closer to an answer to "What is consciousness?". Seemingly irresolvable metaphysical problems are addressed by bootstrapping, provisional assumptions, not unlike those used by logicians and mathematicians. I bootstrap with the same ontology and epistemology applicable to everything we apprehend. Here, I argue for a version of the unity of opposites, a form of neutral monism. Something exists because of what it is not; nothing can exist by itself, singularities (analogous to …
Using Extended Realities To Teach Construction Management, Ryan A. Duca
Using Extended Realities To Teach Construction Management, Ryan A. Duca
Construction Management
This project aimed to analyze the implementation of extended realities to teach construction management at the university level. Extended realities in this context are referring to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR); these are the two for which funding was received by Cavrnus. The foundation for this project started with the pre-existing lesson for the California Polytechnic State University’s (Cal Poly) residential construction class. The original lesson was constructed with the students learning the wood framing of a house by reading. While this is a suitable learning method for some it is not the best for all. This project …
Optical Illusions To Schizophrenic Delusions: How Your Brain Can Alter Reality, Kathryn Stanislaski
Optical Illusions To Schizophrenic Delusions: How Your Brain Can Alter Reality, Kathryn Stanislaski
Honors College
Widely misunderstood, stigmatized and understudied, schizophrenia is often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated. While people diagnosed with schizophrenia are often thought to misinterpret reality, they may be more adept at processing visual sensory information and perceive reality better than those without schizophrenia. Studies involving patients with schizophrenia have shown consistent and extensive insusceptibility of these patients to a variety of optical illusions. In this paper, I propose that when processing visual information, people with schizophrenia rely greater upon the dorsal stream and areas in the brain associated with bottom-up processing, as opposed to those without schizophrenia that utilize the ventral stream …

WWU Honors College Senior Projects
For my senior capstone project, I facilitated a group independent study (ISP) through Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Western Washington University called Advancing Technology and Digital Lifestyles. A small group of students and I critically and creatively analyzed our relationship with technology, and its impacts on the individual, interpersonal relationships, culture, and society. Prior to facilitating, I did research within the fields of cyberpsychology, social psychology, communication studies, and media studies. I am sharing my syllabus and facilitation notes, my final project (two short stories), an annotated bibliography, and a reflection on the group ISP and my process.

An Application Of The Two Routes In Counseling Philosophy, Lance Kair
An Application Of The Two Routes In Counseling Philosophy, Lance Kair
Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review
This is a case study of a session with a subject. The subject’s name is philosophy. Philosophy needs a counseling intervention due to the development of an epistemological rupture revealing two routes into or upon knowledge. This problem that philosophy faces arises along two epistemological routes, called truth and reality. The significant issue of philosophy is how to reconcile a true reality. The proposal at hand for this consideration by philosophy is that a reconciliation is most effective though argumentative validation in orientation over argumentative proof in ideological reduction. Our effort here works toward the truth of reality found through …
Confirmation And Not Revelation: The Radical Imagination And Visions For The Future, Nicole V. Salazar
Confirmation And Not Revelation: The Radical Imagination And Visions For The Future, Nicole V. Salazar
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
The imagination is not a foil to reality, but holds potential for re-envisioning an existing one. The term “radical” in radical imagination implies action. We cannot just imagine and stop there. In order for the imagination to become a tool for (personal/ communal/ global) liberation, it needs to be paired with action. There is no such thing as the “standard” or the “conventional” because it is constructed by those in power. Because of this, the radical imagination has existed for years in the language of the oppressed. Drawing from Black and Indigenous thought and practice, personal experience and work, we …

Religious Texts In The Algerian Novelist Discourse: Their Manifestations And Their Implications, أوريدة عبود
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This article aims to highlight the extent to which the contemporary Algerian novelist discourse can contain the religious text with its cognitive and aesthetic potential. This text contributed to the development of the features of civilization and cultural confrontation. This confrontation, which was the most prominent feature of the struggle throughout the ages and to benefit from its historical load and potential Narratives, as references born in history, and then depend on time and space to remain extended and influential to form an interactive textual intellectual, practicing presence in the texts
Eternal Summer, Christina Teruel
Eternal Summer, Christina Teruel
Art and Design Theses
Eternal Summer invites viewers into multisensory installations and video that simulate the tourist experience and provoke questions about the passage of time, memory, and decadence. The project is rooted in my background; growing up in a tourist community, I experienced a culture built upon grotesque excesses of artificial happiness manufactured through tourism industry workers’ grueling and repetitive physical labor. I examine these practices and how they combine to create a glittering façade of synthetic pleasure for visitors but dissolve into a lonely, monotonous setting for natives. The work compresses time and space through dreamlike surreality in order to demonstrate the …

Bencana Kabut Asap Sebagai Dampak Budaya Konsumsi Dalam Cerpen “Yang Datang Dari Negeri Asap”, Dessy Wahyuni
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Literature, as a work containing facts and fiction, can obscure the conventions of realities and create new realities so that there are no visible boundaries between the real thing and the unreal thing. Fact and fiction coincide and simulate to form hyperreality. In the short story “Yang Datang dari Negeri Asap (Who Comes from the Smoky Country)” by Hary B. Kori’un, the existence of facts and fiction overlap each other. The author created the country of smoke as a fictitious world due to his contemplation on the consumption culture, which is a phenomenon in people’s lives and relates it to …
Fictional Text And Reality Of The Possible, Shusheng Zhang
Fictional Text And Reality Of The Possible, Shusheng Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article explores the issue of reference in fictional texts, that is, the relationship between fictional texts and reality. Paul Ricoeur thinks that the reference of poetic language is not cancelled, but only suspended. Through its semantic creativity, it possesses the ability to transform reality and to turn our personal environment into a habitable world. The interpretation of the concept "world /Welt" and "environment /Umwelt" by Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer shed light on the significance of fictional texts in reality, for they propose to us possible modes of existence in the ontological sense. In other words, fictional texts can …

Reality and livelihood are fields of study for scholars from different backgrounds and interests, especially those of religious fundamentals. Challenging Faith And Gaining Power: Women In Film Who Reject And Subvert Religion, Annika Murrah
Challenging Faith And Gaining Power: Women In Film Who Reject And Subvert Religion, Annika Murrah
Religion and Film
This paper examines the ways that women seize power through rejection and subversion of religion by relating women in film to the real world. Rejection of faith is exemplified by characters in the films The Little Hours (2017) and The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018). Subversion of faith is understood through the films Whale Rider (2003), Jennifer’s Body (2009), and Transparent (2014). Narrative analysis of these films is contrasted with studies of orthodox religion as examined by Dr. Brenda E. Brasher and Dr. Mary Gerhart. The importance and effect of women’s newly-gained power is applied to social change as recorded …
