Collegiality And Job Satisfaction Among Nurse Faculty, Kelsey Phillips Aug 2024

Collegiality And Job Satisfaction Among Nurse Faculty, Kelsey Phillips

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Nurse faculty turnover has been attributed to low levels of support, low wages, long work hours, uncertainty, and an unpleasant work environment. Leaders must find interventions that will impact the collegiality of nurse faculty, the perceived level of support from leadership, and in result retain their faculty. Purpose: Based on a literature review, this quality improvement project aims to determine if implementing a monthly catered lunch promotes collegiality and improves job satisfaction for nursing faculty in a community college in East Texas. Methods: To determine the impact of monthly catered lunches, a pre-and post-intervention tool [Perceived Organizational Support (POS)] will …

Nursing Faculty As Self-Care Influencers: Current Nursing Students’ Perspectives, Shane Yardley Aug 2024

Nursing Faculty As Self-Care Influencers: Current Nursing Students’ Perspectives, Shane Yardley

Dissertations

The future of health care depends on nurses who can provide expert patient care and are equally prepared to care for themselves. This balance allows nurses to effectively model caring for themselves to their patients while also enabling them to withstand the inevitable rigors of the profession. As role models, nursing faculty exhibit behaviors that influence students or role aspirants' ability and motivation to successfully perform self-care. For nursing faculty to be intentional in their influence in this area, they must understand what students interpret as helpful and detrimental in facilitating their self-care. The purpose of this study was to …

Exploring The Degrees Of Ableism Nursing Students With Disabilities Experience, Elizabeth Ruth Brox Aug 2024

Exploring The Degrees Of Ableism Nursing Students With Disabilities Experience, Elizabeth Ruth Brox

Dissertations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2020) estimated about 24% of adults in the United States live with a disability. However, the literature suggested only 4.4% of healthcare workers reported having a disability in the United States. Stigmatization and ableism have likely led to nurses hiding their disabilities while practicing, creating less diversity and representation in practice. When healthcare workers have little resemblance to the population they serve, it can lead to distrust, uncaring behaviors, and feelings of exclusion. Increasing diversity and helping to recognize the value of disability in practice could begin in nursing school. This study aimed …

Dissertations

Concern over academic entitlement has grown in higher education in the last two decades. Academic entitlement, defined as unfounded expectations of academic success, undeserved services and unrealistic accommodations (McLellan & Jackson, 2017), in nursing students is an under investigated phenomena. The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of academic stress and general student satisfaction on academic entitlement beliefs in baccalaureate, junior, and senior level nursing students. In this correlational, cross-sectional study, the transactional theory of stress (Lazarus & Folkman, 1987), and Jeffreys’ (2022) nursing universal retention and success model were used to understand how academic stress and …

Quality Improvement Project: Evaluating The Impact Of An Intrapreneurial Skill Enhancement Program On Enhancing Innovation Perspectives And Overcoming Obstacles Among Nurse Practitioners At A Midwestern Academic Medical Center, Michael Thorn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Nurse practitioners (NPs) face barriers to being innovative in healthcare because of a need for more resources, education, and cultural inclusion compared to physicians and researchers (Joseph et al., 2019). NPs are often disregarded from involvement in the innovation ecosystem and seen as solely end-users of new products and services (Davis & Glasgow, 2020). This Doctor of Nursing Practice project aimed to assess the impact of a 5-week innovation and intrapreneurship course on NPs' perceptions of their ability to innovate at a Midwest academic hospital. The aim was to address the known innovation education gap that NPs rarely receive. Using …

An Expansive Framing Intervention And Its Influence On Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Value For Mathematics, Kimberly Evagelatos Beck

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Nurses regularly use mathematics on the job, yet they often do not view their work as mathematical. This may indicate a lack of transfer from the nursing school mathematics context to nursing practice. Further, nursing students often perceive very little usefulness and relevance for learning mathematics beyond simple calculations. Expansive Framing (EF) is a theory and instructional technique that has been shown to foster transfer by establishing intercontextuality, or connections made between disparate contexts. This research explored whether creating intercontextuality created through broad framing also improved perceptions of mathematics value and transferability, and how intercontextuality functioned as the driver of …

The relationship between a teacher and student can be an important part of student success, especially for students of higher education. One factor that may influence student outcomes is the level of empathy a teacher may demonstrate toward a student. Empathy is an important part of interpersonal relationships as it promotes a feeling or understanding of another’s emotions through taking on a different perspective. Empathy can also produce a response leading to altruistic behavior. According to some theoretical models the prosocial characteristic of empathy contributes to the social emotional competence (SEC) of a teacher or instructor. The higher the SEC …

Cultural humility is the practice of continuous self-reflection and critique where an individual learns about a culture and explores their own personal beliefs and cultural identity. This allows for the deconstruction of biases and assumptions, and the acknowledgment of power imbalances. This in turn helps to build respectful, honest, and trustworthy relationships with others and holds institutions accountable. In the context of the field of nursing, cultural humility plays an important role in creating positive client experiences and healthcare outcomes. Within nursing school accreditation standards, however, cultural humility is not an explicit domain outlined. With that, the incorporation of cultural …
