Factors Influencing The Development Of Social Change Involvement, Linda Johanson, Patti P. Urso, Kimberly Priode

Journal of Excellence in Nursing and Healthcare Practice

How to cultivate and encourage the motivation to become an agent of positive social change has not been studied to a great degree. For example, what kind of factors influence the development and growth in nurses toward a desire to be involved in changing society for the better? Knowledge of these factors could help educators and nurse leaders provide and encourage those growth opportunities. The purpose of this research was to interview nurses known to be deeply involved in various types of positive social change and discover what factors influenced this development. Three overall themes emerged as influencing factors for …

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Culturally Competent Care At The Bedside, Judith Cox

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The population served by health care systems in the United States is widely diversified, which requires nurses to be culturally competent in their care practices. However, studies have shown that nurses do not consistently deliver culturally competent care. This basic qualitative study was designed to explore nurses’ perceptions of cultural competence at the bedside to understand what is needed to improve cultural competency practices. Campinha-Bacote’s conceptual framework for cultural competency was used to guide this study that included face-to-face, videoconference interviews using semi structured and open-ended questions from 13 voluntary, acute care bedside nurses. Interviews were audio recorded and uploaded …

(First paragraph) I enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1985. After reporting for basic training, I learned to execute military formation maneuvering commands. Military formations help organize ceremonial parades, gain tactical advantage, and create discipline. It occurs to me that the same elements that contribute to effective functioning of a military unit- ceremony, tactical planning, and discipline- also contribute to achieving one's goals after completing graduate school.

The Effect Of Continuing Professional Development From The Perspective Of Nurses And Midwives Who Participated In Continuing Education Programs Offered By Global Health Alliance Western Australia: A Mixed-Method Study, Yan Ing (Jenni) Ng

Theses

Continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities for nurses and midwives are central to improving knowledge, broadening skills and maintaining competencies to provide best practice and clinical care. This is gained through participating in continuing education (CE). CPD is readily accessible and a mandatory requirement for nurses and midwives in developed nations, such as Australia. However, in developing countries, such as Tanzania, while CPD is promoted, it has limited availability. As such, the Global Health Alliance Western Australia (GHAWA), an international health development program, seeks to provide further sustainable CPD opportunities for nurses and midwives in Tanzania.

The purpose of this research …

Friends Of Nursing: A Community Of Caring To Promote Excellence In Nursing Practice, Education, And Research, Kim S. Hitchings Msn, Rn, Nea-Bc, Terry Capuano Rn, Svp, Clinical Services, Mary Ellen Herzog Med, Cfre, Cgms

Terry A Capuano MBA, MSN, RN, FACHE, NE-BC

More than 25 years ago, the name "Friends of Nursing" was adopted by an academic, community Magnet(®) hospital to signify a model for community support of nursing. From inception, the intent was to recruit philanthropic dollars to promote recognition of and excellence in nursing practice, education, and research. Although philanthropy in health care settings is common, what is unique about this program is the long-standing, dedicated conceptual framework for nursing philanthropy and the very significant number of philanthropic dollars from literally thousands of donors to support a diverse range of activities to affect and advance the professional excellence of nurses …

[First paragraph] Making the decision to return to school for a PhD was difficult for me. I feared the unknown but inescapable lifestyle adjustments. I’m resistant to change. When facing life’s cold waters, I wade, rather than plunge. There’s no wading into a PhD program. In spite of my cautious nature, I took the plunge.

Self-Transcendence And Spiritual Well-Being In Participants Of Short-Term, Faith-Based, Foreign, Health Care Missions, Elizabeth Ann Fiske May 2009

Self-Transcendence And Spiritual Well-Being In Participants Of Short-Term, Faith-Based, Foreign, Health Care Missions, Elizabeth Ann Fiske

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate the presence and possible relationship of self-transcendence and spiritual well-being in persons who have completed at least one short-term, foreign, health care mission (SFHCM). There is a paucity of literature related to SFHCM; however, these trips are becoming increasingly commonplace. In the anecdotal literature, SFHCM are often described as life changing. The descriptions of this growth experience in the literature are quite similar to the concept of self-transcendence as defined in the nursing literature. Reed's (2003) middle range theory of self-transcendence was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The major …
