Medical Missions, Ethical Considerations And The Future For Healthcare Delivery In Ophthalmology, Robert Medina, Ba
inSIGHT
Beginning hundreds of years ago, priests from Europe embarked on ‘medical missions’ with the goals of delivering care to the body, mind, and soul. Hundreds of years later, members of the United States healthcare system set out on humanitarian medical missions to provide medical assistance to communities in developing countries.1 The concept of providing care internationally as a product of global social responsibility has become engrained in the United States healthcare system, and is popular among providers, trainees, and pre-medical students. In 2023, 21.8% (n = 3264) of matriculating medical students reported participating in international volunteer work, while 7.0% …

Nicaraguan Homeowner Showing Gratitude For Concrete Flooring As Part Of A Public Health Mission Trip, Breonna Kinnison
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
I’m Bree Kinnison, a fourth-year medical student and aspiring psychiatrist. When I’m not studying, I enjoy painting using acrylics. This painting depicts a very fond memory of mine. After completing the medical portion of our mission trip in Nicaragua, we began our public health portion. Along with fellow students, I laid concrete flooring in this woman’s house. For all 76 years of her life, she had never experienced anything other than a dirt floor in her home. Traditional dirt flooring in Nicaraguan homes is responsible for many preventable illnesses. When shown the final product, she reached out and hugged the …

Occupational Therapy In Haiti: A Pilot Study To Identify Intervention Methods Used During Short-Term Medical Missions, Sheelagh M. Schlegel, Kathleen Mathieson
Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications
Due to the shortage of occupational therapists (OTs) in Haiti and over 800,000 individuals with disabilities, most occupational therapy assessments and interventions are provided by OTs on short-term medical missions (STMMs). Learning which methods OT use to provide assessments and interventions during these STMMs is the first step to understanding how to facilitate followup and carry-over for clients and ensure longevity for STMMs in Haiti. This study used a cross-sectional, descriptive design to gather data on methods used by OTs. Thirty-three OTs, who travelled to Haiti on STMMs, completed a 16-question, online survey. The most common method provided by OTs …

'This Open Sore Of The World:' The Legacy Of Dr. David Livingstone, The First Physician Missionary: Hero And Adventurer, Audrey Provenzano
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
At the end of the nineteenth century, Dr. David Livingstone became extraordinarily famous throughout Europe as the first physician-missionary. Livingstone embodied certain characteristics, adventurism and heroism, that Europeans found desirable and commendable. Livingstone issued a call for young men, particularly physicians, to follow him to Africa and continue his work. Using personal letters, journals, and other accounts of the physicians who followed Livingstone to Africa, specifically the region of Buganda, this paper explores how these themes of heroism and adventurism can be traced through the lives of the physicians who responded to Livingstones call. This paper traces these common themes …
