Perceived Degree Value Amongst Two-Year Technical School Graduates, And Regional Employers: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Jonathan D. Hartwell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to gain an in-depth understanding of how graduates of Zion Mountain Institute of Technology (pseudonym), perceive the value of their two-year technical degrees as it relates to job satisfaction. In this research, job satisfaction is defined as the perceived value of the associate degree awarded. The theories that guided this study were Herzberg’s two-factor theory and Holland’s theory of vocational choice, as they both relate to job satisfaction or perceived degree value due to the correlation between employability, hygiene issues, motivators, and personality characteristics. The participant sample consisted of 10 recent graduates …

Examining The Predictive Validity Of A Managerial Coaching Scale: A Longitudinal Study, Katherine Stone, Kim Nimon, Andrea D. Ellinger
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
Managerial coaching remains a widespread and popular organizational development intervention applied across numerous industries to enhance critical workplace outcomes and employee attitudes, yet no studies to date have evaluated the temporal precedence within these relationships. This study sought to assess the predictive validity of the widely used Employee Perceptions of Supervisor/Line Manager Coaching Behavior Measure managerial coaching scale (CBI), employing a longitudinal design and following the testing of the causal hypothesized relationship framework. Three hypotheses were evaluated using three commonly associated variables with managerial coaching (role clarity, job satisfaction, and organization commitment), using longitudinal data collected over two waves from …

The Role Of Discrete Emotions In Job Satisfaction: A Meta-Analysis, Courtney E. Williams, Jane Shumski Thomas, Andrew A. Bennett, George C. Banks, Allison Toth, Alexandra M. Dunn, Andrew Mcbride, Janaki Gooti
Management Faculty Publications
[Summary] The relationship between emotions and job satisfaction is widely acknowledged via affective events theory (AET). Despite its widespread use, AET was not designed to address why specific emotions might differentially relate to job satisfaction. We utilize appraisal theory of emotion to refine AET and provide this nuanced theorizing. We meta‐analytically test our ideas with 235 samples across 99 883 individuals and 22 600 intra‐individual episodes. We test two approaches—specific emotion experiences (16 discrete emotions) versus general emotion experiences (positive or negative emotions)—and present empirical evidence of their similarities and differences with job satisfaction. Our findings suggest that specific emotions …

Examining Information Systems Use To Facilitate The Workplace Accommodation Process, Shiya Cao
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: The workplace accommodation process is often affected by ineffective and inefficient communications and information exchanges among disabled employees and other stakeholders. Information systems (IS) can play a key role in facilitating a more effective and efficient accommodation process since IS has been shown to facilitate business processes and effect positive organizational changes.
OBJECTIVE: Since there is little to no research that exists on IS use to facilitate the workplace accommodation process, this paper, as a critical first step, examines how IS have been used in the accommodation process.
METHODS: Thirty-six interviews were conducted with disabled employees from various organizations. …

This study focused on what and how mental health leaders’ transformational leadership behaviors promote their job satisfaction. This study used a qualitative phenomenological research design with semi-structured interviews as the data collection method. The population sample consisted of ten (10) mental health leaders. The participants were recruited using social media platforms Facebook, LinkedIn, and Liberty University’s School …

The term comfort level has been characterized as an employee’s wellbeing within an organization. Employee comfort level has been shown to be related to an employee’s ability to assist in decision making, their opportunity to be around individuals similar to them, environmental surrounding aspects, and experiences. There is limited research connecting employee comfort levels to how satisfied employees feel or their desire to leave the organization. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the impact that minority employees’ comfort levels have on their job satisfaction and turnover intention. Variables of comfort, job satisfaction, and turnover intention were analyzed …

Leadership Styles In Ncaa Division I Athletic Administration And Their Relationships To Job Satisfaction, Valerie Gomez
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
As an industry, college athletics has become a focal point of much attention and scrutiny as a result of increasing moral and ethical scandals, as well as lucrative media and personnel contracts. Scandals such as admissions fraud, academic cheating, and financial crimes are a cause for concern regarding the leadership within Division I athletic departments. Organizational and individual outcomes have been associated with leadership. While extant research has focused on the leadership of coaches and the athletic director, the leadership of the senior-level leadership team has been largely neglected. Given the structure of many Division I athletic departments, the senior-level …

Leaders' Virtual & In-Person Communication: The Impact Of Employee Preference On Job Satisfaction, Adalin Mcdaniel
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Communication between supervisors and subordinates has consistently been viewed as a primary element of leadership, and a factor that is important in the leader-subordinate relationship via Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory. Recently, with the massive shift to virtual working, leadership communication has gained greater prominence in research and practical settings. Therefore, examining the role that virtual leadership communication plays in employee job satisfaction is an important first step in beginning to understand the shift to predominant work settings from home. I examined the influence of employee perceptions and preferences of leadership communication on job satisfaction via a panel design in which …
Organizational Change In The Workplace During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Takeisha Shante Miles
Organizational Change In The Workplace During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Takeisha Shante Miles
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Failed change initiatives continuously plagued organizations throughout time, mainly because of the complexities involving the response to change. Researchers studied to understand the cause and effect of failed change efforts. The type of change often notes as a precursor to the kind of response, while the resistance to change was a catalyst to the 70% rate of failed change initiatives (Burnes & Jackson, 2011; Maheshwari & Vohra, 2015). Organizational change initiatives become further complicated, involving a crisis. This qualitative multiple case study included the phenomenon of unsuccessful change proposals during a crisis, its implications on job satisfaction and employee resistance, …
Bidirectional Leader-Member Exchange And The Impact On Middle Manager Job Satisfaction, Brian A. Collera
Bidirectional Leader-Member Exchange And The Impact On Middle Manager Job Satisfaction, Brian A. Collera
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Leader-member exchange (LMX) theory focuses on the quality of the relationship between a leader and member. LMX is associated with a number of positive member outcomes, but LMX research has largely neglected what, if any, positive benefits leaders attain from high quality relationships beyond better team performance. The purpose of this study was to apply the LMX theory to middle managers in organizations. Middle managers inherently balance the competing interests of multidirectional relationships, acting as both a leader and a member in the organizational hierarchy. This study explored how middle manager’s self-rating of LMX (relationship with their subordinates), leader-leader exchange …

Government Contract Re-Compete Impacts On Employees, John James Bergmann
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative, case study research project was to examine the impacts of recurring contract re-competes on the defense contractor workforce. The primary focus was on how these every 5-year events affected morale, job satisfaction, productivity, and retention. The initial research effort explored factors which motivate and de-motivate employees, described common attributes of defense contractors, and discussed the vagaries of the contract re-compete process specifically and government contracting in general. This led to development of a conceptual framework, identification of several theories to assist in explaining and predicting employee behavior, and the design of semi-structured research questions to …

ABSTRACT: A recent advice article published by The Chronicle of Higher Education addressed how Tenure and Tenure-Track faculty members are leaving their academic positions at college and universities. Education underwent tremendous change due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as faculty had to transition from in-person lectures and laboratory classes to teaching all classes and lectures in a virtual format and then a hybrid between in-person and online. The changes caused by the Pandemic came swiftly but did not come with ease. My dissertation examines Job Satisfaction through the lens of Turnover Intentions and Burnout for Academic Faculty. I surveyed faculty around …

It’S So Boring – Or Is It? Examining The Role Of Mindfulness For Work Performance And Attitudes In Monotonous Jobs, Andreas Wihler, Ute R. Hülsheger, Jochen Reb, Jochen I. Menges
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine the role of employee mindfulness in the context of highly monotonous work conditions. Integrating research on task monotony with theorizing on mindfulness, we hypothesized that mindfulness is negatively associated with the extent to which employees feel generally bored by their jobs. We further hypothesized that this lower employee boredom would relate to downstream outcomes in the form of job attitudes (job satisfaction and turnover intentions) and task performance. We examined both objective task performance quality and quantity to shed light on the complexity of the mindfulness–task performance relation, which has so far mostly been investigated using subjective supervisor …

Executive Job Motivation: A Non-Profit Perspective, Jacques Kalume Mambo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractNonprofit organization (NPO) executives, who serve others while accepting substantial salary and benefit packages, may be motivated by extrinsic and intrinsic elements of their job satisfaction. Yet little is known about the extent to which executives are motivated by altruism alone or by financial compensation and other extrinsic rewards. The purpose of this quantitative study was to test the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic motivation was correlated with the job satisfaction of NPO executives. The theoretical framework was Ryan and Deci’s self-determination theory, which suggest NPO executives may be solely satisfied through intrinsic motivation. A stratified random sample of …

Over the past few decades, the number of individuals engaging in non-standard employment has been increasing. Drawing on self-determination theory (SDT), this study examines the motivation and job satisfaction of independent contractors, the largest form of these alternative work arrangements. Specifically, I examine how the rationale for workers entering contracting work arrangements affect in-role contractor motivation and job satisfaction. Based on a sample of N = 241 adjunct instructors from two universities, I find that the positive relationship between those entering contracting because the work offers autonomy, flexibility and the ability to pursue personally interesting work (pull factors) and their …
