Tomizo And Tokujiro: The First Japanese Mormons, Shinji Takagi Apr 2000

Tomizo And Tokujiro: The First Japanese Mormons, Shinji Takagi

BYU Studies Quarterly

In August 1901, Heber J. Grant and his companions arrived in Japan to open the first permanent mission in Asia and begin their difficult proselyting labors among the Japanese. It took them almost seven long months to claim the first fruit of their labors. On March 8, 1902, on the shore of Omori in Tokyo Bay, Hajime Nakazawa, a professed Shinto priest, was baptized, confirmed, and ordained an elder. This event was symbolic indeed. For one thing, Nakazawa was presumably affiliated with a religious sect whose roots went back to the ancient indigenous religion of Japan. For another, more interestingly, …

Asset Price Inflation- Theory, History, And An Alternative Model, Christian Fitchett Jan 2000

Asset Price Inflation- Theory, History, And An Alternative Model, Christian Fitchett

Honors Papers

This paper takes a different approach by developing a model based on the boom and bust cycle of Japan during the mid to late 1980's, using currently accepted theory. In section II, I review the general characteristics of asset bubbles to familiarize the reader and offer some historical examples. Section III offers a review of many of the theoretical papers on asset bubbles, as well as empirical papers, which involve similar phenomena in order to gain some insight in building the model. In section IV, I build a theoretical model. Section V begins preliminary testing to examine this theory and …

The Philosophical And Historical Dynamics Of Watsuji Tetsuro's Cultural Phenomenology, Edgar Allan Weir Jan 2000

The Philosophical And Historical Dynamics Of Watsuji Tetsuro's Cultural Phenomenology, Edgar Allan Weir

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study will examine one of the greatest modern Japanese philosophers, Watsuji Tetsuro. In a long and prodigious life Watsuji produced some of the most insightful works now extant in ethics, cultural identity, and intellectual history. This work will explicate two pillars of Watsuji's philosophy: the source of authentic Japanese identity and the primacy of human relationships within that authenticity. This study will also uncover the conjunctures between history and thought that sparked the developments and transformations in Watsuji's philosophy. More importantly, it will attempt to free Watsuji's theories from telelogical approaches that have utilized the war, erroneously conflating Watsuji's …

A Public Choice Approach To Private Ordering: Rent-Seeking At The World's First Futures Exchange: Comments On Mark West's 'Private Ordering At The World's First Futures Exchange', Omri Yadlin

Michigan Law Review

The literature on private ordering systems has expanded exponentially over the last decade. Yet, very few scholars have actually attempted to define the term "private ordering" - a failure that sometimes leads to confusion. Some scholars identify private ordering with non-state ordering. According to this view, the private legal systems Robert Ellickson, Lisa Bernstein, McMillan & Woodruff, Mark West, and others have investigated are "private" simply because their norms are not manufactured or enforced by the state. The alternative view emphasizes the decentralized feature of private ordering systems. Robert Ellickson, for example, studied "how people manage to interact to mutual …

Rethinking Relationship-Specific Investments: Subcontracting In The Japanese Automobile Industry, Yoshiro Miwa, J. Mark Ramseyer

Michigan Law Review

Longer ago than either of us cares to remember, one of us attended junior high in Tokyo. On Saturdays, he worked at a printed circuit factory. Or maybe "factory" makes it all sound too grand. A small building in back of a gas station, it had three or four punch presses. The "president" supervised matters (though he actually spent more time hanging out at the gas station), together with a sidekick who did assorted odd jobs besides. Several middle-aged women with no apparent technical education or skill ran the presses. The junior high kid spent his time trimming the sheets …

Susan O Long

n an era of changing demographics and values, this volume provides a cross-national and interdisciplinary perspective on the question of who cares for and about the elderly. The contributors reflect on research studies, experimental programmes and personal experience in Japan and the United States to explicitly compare how policies, practices and interpretations of elder care are evolving at the turn of the century.
