The American Economy: Is A Turning Point At Hand?, Murray L. Weidenbaum Jul 1989

The American Economy: Is A Turning Point At Hand?, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

American businesses are making adjustments to the global marketplace. Politically, the big question is whether or not the Cold War is finally ending. Can the United States successfully shift key resources to the civilian economy? Will the lower military demand lead to a worldwide recession or will it free up resources for a period of stronger growth? There are signs of a potential slowdown in the short term. In the long term, open markets seem to be prevailing, with three dominant clusters emerging: Europe, U.S./Canada, and the Pacific rim.

Dietary Differences And Microwear On The Teeth Of Late Stone Age And Early Modern People From Western Japan, Teruyuki Hojo Jun 1989

Dietary Differences And Microwear On The Teeth Of Late Stone Age And Early Modern People From Western Japan, Teruyuki Hojo

Scanning Microscopy

A small sample of human teeth from western Japan was examined under a scanning electron microscope. All were from sites of two different ages: a Late Stone Age site dating from approximately 4,000 B.P., and an Early Modern site dating from 150-200 B.P. SEM analyses reveal that the scratches on the teeth from the Late Stone Age site tend to be larger and more frequent than those on the teeth from the Early Modern site. These microwear differences may be related to dietary differences between two populations.

The Tokyo War Crimes Trial, L C. Green Apr 1989

The Tokyo War Crimes Trial, L C. Green

Dalhousie Law Journal

Until comparatively recently (see, eg., The Other Nuremberg by Arnold C. Brackman, 1987) there has been little written in western countries concerning the International Military Tribunal for the Far East - the Tokyo Tribunal - when compared with its "sister" Tribunal at Nuremberg. The compilation of Principles drawn up by the United Nations is known as the Nuremberg Principles regardless of the fact that the same principles were applied in Tokyo. In 1983, to coincide with the first Japanese showing of the film The Tokyo Trial premiered in New York two years later, an International Symposium on the Trial was …

Flexibility: The Next Competitive Battle: The Manufacturing Futures Survey, Arnoud De Meyer, Jinichiro Nakane, Jeffrey M. Miller, Kasra Ferdows

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Over the past 4 years research teams from INSEAD (Fontainebleau), Boston University and Waseda University (Tokyo) have administered a yearly survey on the manufacturing strategy of the large manufacturers of the three industrialized regions of the world. In this paper the results for the 1986 survey are compared. One of the most striking results of that year’s survey is the emphasis some of the more advanced manufacturers put on their efforts to overcome the trade-off between flexibility and cost efficiency. In particular for the Japanese respondents these attempts become clear. Europeans and North Americans are not yet seizing the opportunity …

Arrest First, Ask Questions Later: The Japanese Police Detention System, Christopher James Neumann

Penn State International Law Review

The Japanese police detention system enables police and prosecutors to detain criminal suspects for up to twenty-three days without a formal charge, thus posing numerous human rights problems. This comment concentrates on the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which provides a means for identifying the human rights abuses occurring under the Japanese police detention system, as well as a method for rectifying such abuses.

Unemployment In Japan's Declining Industries: A Re-Evaluation Of Japanese Employment Adjustment Policy, Susan N. Duke

Employment adjustment legislation and the Japanese government's past performance in creating and implementing employment adjustment policy are re-evaluated.

A Comparison Of U.S. And Japanese Attitudes About The Relevance Of Current Consolidation Accounting Procedures, James A. Schweikart, Walter F. O'Connor Jan 1989

A Comparison Of U.S. And Japanese Attitudes About The Relevance Of Current Consolidation Accounting Procedures, James A. Schweikart, Walter F. O'Connor

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Consolidation accounting has not materially changed since APB Opinions 16 and 18. Only minor changes have been made such as the new rules requiring financial subsidiaries to be consolidated (FAS 94, 1989). The recent trend of mergers and acquisitions, however, represents a significant change in business environment from that which existed when consolidation accounting as we know it was formalized. Accordingly, there is concern that current consolidation practices may be less appropriate or relevant than before.

Comparison: Japanese And American Plant Closing Laws, Allison Zousmer Jan 1989

Comparison: Japanese And American Plant Closing Laws, Allison Zousmer

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note analyzes the American and Japanese approaches to plant closings and discusses to what extent the American government can apply the successful Japanese approach to its own labor relations system. The first part examines the specific provisions of the two nations' laws. Second, it illustrates how the divergent social rules and historical backgrounds influence the operation of the plant closing laws in both nations. Part three explores the impact and applicability of Japanese labor policies to American industrial practices. The Note concludes that although the Japanese provide a general model for a labor management system which combines cooperation and …

An Economic Analysis Of Fertility, Market Participation And Marriage Behaviour In Recent Japan, David K. C. Lee, Chin Lee Gan Jan 1989

An Economic Analysis Of Fertility, Market Participation And Marriage Behaviour In Recent Japan, David K. C. Lee, Chin Lee Gan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This is the 1st attempt in modelling fertility, labor force participation and marriage rate using Japanese data. The authors use Butz and Ward's model and extend it to a simultaneous equation system as in the case of Winegarden. Although the estimates obtained by Full Information Maximum Likelihood and Three Stage Least Squares of the model are statistically significant, some of the signs of the estimates are not consistent to a priori predictions. The crux of the model is that an increase in the wages of men has an unambiguous positive effect on fertility, whereas an increase in wages of women …
