In recent years, more designers have been engaging in transitions for which design activity is used to develop innovations that steer change. However, little is known about how designers develop innovations to foster change along a desired transition path. In this short paper, we explore how designers can develop joint innovations that steer a transition of the Dutch food system to embrace flexibility and cater to enough. Over the years, “Innovation labs” have come and gone in public sector organizations. At Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, one low-key, co-design project over-delivered on client insights, service experience improvements and operational efficiencies. This case study shares one department’s success in embedding human-centered design into organizational culture by: competing against graduate design students, co-designing across the organization (from call agents, to policy, immigration officers, and communications), creating a design project alumni community, and adhering to rigorous measurement and experimentation. This paper reveals the methodology developed and adopted by groups of Multidisciplinary Design Innovation Masters students whilst working on projects with regional Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s). It exposes an eight-stage approach and shows how the creation of a ‘problem-space tapestry’ acts as a mediator between different disciplinary approaches. The authors used a combinationof observation, interview, post project-analysis and auto ethnographic reflection in order to uncover this process and to draw conclusions about the conditions that are necessary to support university based multidisciplinary design-led innovation projects of this type.
