Background and Purpose of the Study: Healthcare access and utilization in the U.S. continue to pose serious challenges to immigrants. Although the U.S. spends the most on healthcare ($3.8 trillion) among developed countries, accessing and utilizing the U.S. healthcare has become an illusion to most immigrants living in the U.S. including Ghanaians. Crossing Boundaries To Education: Haitian Transnational Families And The Quest To Raise The Family Up, Tekla Nicholas

Nearly 175, 000 Haitian immigrants have settled in South Florida since the 1970s. Their lives are often lived transnationally with persistent connections and obligations to family members in Haiti. Yet, traditional theories of immigrant assimilation focus on the integration of immigrants into host countries, giving little consideration to relationships and activities that extend into migrants' countries of origin. Conversely, studies of transnational families do not explicitly address incorporation into the receiving country. Connecting Transnationalism To The Classroom And To Theories Of Immigrant Student Adaptation, G. Sue Kasun

This essay describes the importance of transnationalism in the lives of U.S. immigrant students and their families and how public school educators and researchers have neither adequately recognized nor situated this lifestyle. The authors discuss globalization and what propels transnational movement and argue that existing immigrant adaptation research from the fields of sociology and anthropology focuses on immigration processes extensively without making connections to the classroom. The authors maintain that transnationalism remains largely undertheorized in educational research.
