Mental Health First Aid (Mhfa) Training Of First Responders, Rebecca Leigh Bandy

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study aimed to address the gap in the mental health training of first responders. Mental health issues have increased and continue to increase each year and is leading to more emergency calls being made about individuals with mental illnesses or in a mental health crisis. With this increase in calls related to mental health, first responders are not prepared to handle these calls. This study examined the effectiveness of a mental health training program, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), on first responders’ knowledge, stigmas, comfort level, confidence level, ability to identify mental health symptoms, and benefits for first responders …

Are Ems Prepared To Respond To A Pandemic Or Bioterrorist Attack?, Douglas Howard Schneider

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic increased America’s awareness of the amount of death and damage to the economy that pandemics and bioterrorism can cause. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant shortfalls in national preparedness for a pandemic or bioterrorism event. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current preparedness level of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel in the United States to prepare for, respond to, mitigate, and recover from a natural or manufactured pandemic across the United States. The significance of this study is an accurate picture of preparedness for pandemic and bioterrorism events by American EMS systems. …

Sirencide: The Impact Of Acute Stress On Emergency Vehicle Crashes, Dustin Lambert

Dissertations

Emergency services provide an invaluable service to communities and cities around the world. Research has shown these professionals encounter significant acute psychological stress throughout their work shifts. Acute stress has been shown to impact human performance in various realms, from increased risk-taking to cognitive decline. While the actual work varies between firefighters, law enforcement, and emergency medical services, a shared commonality is the operation of emergency vehicles. Emergency vehicle crashes are recognized as a serious issue by FEMA. The current work aimed to measure the impact of acute stress on emergency responders as measured by fatal emergency vehicle crashes in …

The Community 911 System: Sources Of Strain And Relief, Elizabeth Zulauf May 2017

The Community 911 System: Sources Of Strain And Relief, Elizabeth Zulauf

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This thesis will identify best practices from other localities around the country and propose a set of possible solutions for Harrisonburg EMS. Because non-emergency 911 calls use resources, finances, equipment and time that contribute to the burden that the emergency system faces, communities have adopted programs that aim to ease this burden by limiting the amount of ambulance responses to calls that turn out to be non-emergency. It is not only in Harrisonburg, but across the country that “providers are overwhelmed with evaluation, treatment and transportation of patients who have minor medical conditions but who have nowhere else to turn …

Sex Differences In Stress, Burnout And Coping In Emergency Medical Service Providers, Celia R. Sporer Sep 2016

Sex Differences In Stress, Burnout And Coping In Emergency Medical Service Providers, Celia R. Sporer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The physical and psychological wellbeing of emergency medical service (EMS) providers is important for sustaining the overall model of emergency responding as well as providing consistent quality patient care. Despite the importance of the role, very little research has been undertaken for this occupational group. In particular, very little research on stress, burnout and coping have been undertaken. The failure to examine these areas fully has resulted not only in gaps in the literature but also practical failure for providers and the populations they serve. The assumption that EMS providers work under stressful circumstances which can result in burnout and …

Mamaroneck Ems And The Continuity Of Operations: Homeland Security On A Local Level, Samantha M. Gagliardi Jan 2012

Mamaroneck Ems And The Continuity Of Operations: Homeland Security On A Local Level, Samantha M. Gagliardi

Master in Management for Public Safety and Homeland Security Professionals Master's Projects

The definition of homeland security and all that it encompasses has been an ongoing discussion since the events of 9/11. As a homeland security professional it has become clear to me that homeland security is not only a federal obligation, but a local priority as well. All events are local and the government cannot be solely responsible for the preparation, response, and resilience of each individual community. The Village of Mamaroneck is a small jurisdiction approximately 30 miles from New York City. The prime threat this Village has faced is inclement weather and severe flooding due to the multiple floodplains …

Keeping the nation resilient; that is a nation able to withstand any threat or catastrophe is a primary goal of the United States Government. Ever since 9-11 our nation has had to face the reality that we can be vulnerable to threats from forces outside our control.
