Extended Functional Connectivity Of Convergent Structural Alterations Among Anxiety Disorders: A Meta-Analysis And Functional Connectivity Analysis, Brianna S. Pankey Nov 2021

Extended Functional Connectivity Of Convergent Structural Alterations Among Anxiety Disorders: A Meta-Analysis And Functional Connectivity Analysis, Brianna S. Pankey

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anxiety-related disorders are some of the most pervasive mental health disorders affecting adult and youth populations. Despite growing evidence of the neurobiology associated with anxiety-related disorders, a consensus on the neurobiological mechanisms of anxiety-related disorders remains to be elucidated. We first provide background literature on the reasoning behind this dissertation in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, we conducted a neuroimaging meta-analysis on posttraumatic stress disorder to identify convergent structural and functional alterations associated with this anxiety-related disorder among adults. In Chapter 3, we conducted a neuroimaging meta-analysis to identify convergent structural alterations across diverse groupings of anxiety-related disorders …

The Developmental Plasticity Of Fruit Fly Vision, John Paul Currea Jun 2021

The Developmental Plasticity Of Fruit Fly Vision, John Paul Currea

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we explore the morphological and neural plasticity underlying vision at different scales—within and between species of Drosophila—to elucidate the role of eye development in the evolution of vision. In chapter 2, we offer a tool to accelerate large-scale research into compound eye morphology, and validate it on the eyes of several insect orders and image media. Then, in chapter 3 we demonstrate the developmental plasticity of eye morphology and neural summation in fruit flies, finding an interesting interplay between the two systems. In chapter 4, we elucidate the role of visual plasticity and neural summation in the …

Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John Jun 2021

Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Canadian banks have been important components of an imperialist system since at least the 19th century. However, their long and rich history of operating as purely exploitative entities in the English-speaking Caribbean region is often overlooked— leading to many incomplete and conflicting narratives about Canada’s role within the global system. I argue that Canada is an imperial actor that exerts agency in supporting a Canadian banking oligopoly both within Canada and in the English-speaking Caribbean. Insufficient attention is given to these Canadian banks, especially considering the power they have wielded in the Caribbean over the centuries. By analyzing the …

Gen Z And Millennials In The Workplace: How Are Leaders Adapting To Their Short Attention Span And How Will They Keep Them From Leaving A Qualitative Study, Maribel Rachel Diz

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a new type of employee entering the workforce that is a true digital native with allegedly the shortest attention span known as Generation Z. Coupled with millennials, they will dominate the workforce. The problem investigated is the effects of short attention spans in the workplace and how this is being magnified by the incoming Generation Z cohort and existing millennials. Companies will need to adapt to short attention spans, along with what will engage and retain these two cohorts. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore both generations as there are no current studies with this …
