Of Property And Antiproperty, Abraham Bell, Gideon Parchomovsky Oct 2003

Of Property And Antiproperty, Abraham Bell, Gideon Parchomovsky

Michigan Law Review

Private property is widely perceived as a potent prodevelopment and anticonservationist force. The drive to accumulate wealth through private property rights is thought to encourage environmentally destructive development; legal protection of such property rights is believed to thwart environmentally friendly public measures. Indeed, property rights advocates and environmentalists are generally described as irreconcilable foes. This presumed clash often leads environmentalists to urge public acquisition of private lands. Interestingly, less attention is paid to the possibility that the government may prove no better a conservator than private owners. Government actors often mismanage conservation properties, collaborating with private developers to dispose of …

Acculturation As A Developmental Pathway, David Lackland Sam, Brit Oppedal Apr 2003

Acculturation As A Developmental Pathway, David Lackland Sam, Brit Oppedal

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This chapter looks at some developmental issues in the acculturation of children and adolescents with immigrant backgrounds. In addition to raising critical questions about this line of research, the chapter examines some underlying assumptions and their implications for the study of acculturation in younger people. It is argued that ambiguities in the final outcome of acculturation and differences in acculturation experiences of adults and children make it necessary to bring developmental perspectives closer into this line of research among children and adolescents in immigrant families. Against this background a modified developmental contextual model is suggested as an alternate perspective to …

Canadian East Coast Offshore Oil And Gas Industry: Sustainable Development Through Cooperative Federalism, Keith R. Evans Apr 2003

Canadian East Coast Offshore Oil And Gas Industry: Sustainable Development Through Cooperative Federalism, Keith R. Evans

Dalhousie Law Journal

For many years, development of the oil and gas potential off the east coast of Canada was delayed while the jurisdictional issues in respect of the area were resolved. While the provinces lost the major court battles on jurisdiction, political pressures combined with practical aspects of provincial involvement in the land bases for operations in the offshore area have resulted in pragmatic cooperation between the two levels of government and the establishment of joint administrative Boards to oversee exploration and development in the area. This paper explores the background to and the mechanics used for this pragmatic constitutional resolution and, …

Inordinate Chill: Bits, Non-Nafta Mits, And Host-State Regulatory Freedom- An Indonesian Case Study, Stuart G. Gross Jan 2003

Inordinate Chill: Bits, Non-Nafta Mits, And Host-State Regulatory Freedom- An Indonesian Case Study, Stuart G. Gross

Michigan Journal of International Law

A number of structural factors, which are beyond the immediate scope of this Note, may influence less wealthy countries to cave in to investor threats of arbitration, as Indonesia appears to have done here. However, their hesitancy to fight may also be based, in part, on an inadequate understanding of the applicable law, which allows investors to inordinately influence host-State decisions through threats of arbitration that have little or no chance of success. In regard to the mining companies' threat, this at least appears to be the case. As this Note will demonstrate, the GOI could have likely beaten the …

Towards The Promotion Of Effective E-Learning Practice For Academic-Staff Development In Dit, Roisin Ca Donnelly, Frances O'Brien Jan 2003

Towards The Promotion Of Effective E-Learning Practice For Academic-Staff Development In Dit, Roisin Ca Donnelly, Frances O'Brien

Level 3

Despite the many challenges facing educators today, as well as the array of teaching paradigms on offer, the principal goals of higher education will always remain the same: higher education plays a central role in the development of human beings and modern societies alike, as it enhances social, cultural and economic development, active citizenship and ethical values (HEA, 2003).

Globalisation of higher education, increased initiatives aiming at internationalisation, the activities of ‘so-called’ new providers and various forms of ‘borderless’ higher education, challenge the higher-education community worldwide and call for new and imaginative strategies. To successfully fulfil their educational, …

Process Design, Development, Fabrication And Verification Of A Cmos Technology For Rit, Jeremiah L. Hebding Jan 2003

Process Design, Development, Fabrication And Verification Of A Cmos Technology For Rit, Jeremiah L. Hebding

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

The motivation in creation of the Strongarm process flow was to create a robust “enabling” process that was easy to manufacture. Optimum process conditions have been determined through extensive SUPREM simulation. Electrical examination using ATLAS software allowed for parameter extraction of the computer-generated devices. Modeling the extracted parameters with standard device physics equations allowed for a SPICE level-2 analysis that could be verified through electrical testing of actual fabricated devices. The technology was designed for a two micron, twin-well process incorporating a 4Onm gate oxide and an N+ poly gate. Source and drain implants are at 2E15 cm2, …

Immunohistochemical Detection Of Heparin-Binding Lectin In The Development Of The Bovine Thymus, Kami̇l Seyrek, Ayşegül Bi̇ldi̇k Jan 2003

Immunohistochemical Detection Of Heparin-Binding Lectin In The Development Of The Bovine Thymus, Kami̇l Seyrek, Ayşegül Bi̇ldi̇k

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Heparin is a heterogeneous mixture of highly charged glycosaminoglycans that can exert a variety of biological and biochemical effects. Increasing attention is being paid to its role in cellular processes such as angiogenesis, cellular attachment, growth modulation and smooth muscle cell proliferation. The characterisation of cellular receptors for heparin-binding proteins is a rational step in the quest to elucidate the biochemical basis of specific binding and heparin-mediated responses. We studied the distribution of heparin-binding lectin at the optical level during bovine thymus development on sections of fixed tissue using antibodies raised against this lectin. The presence of ligands accessible to …

An Assessment Of Femur Growth Parameters In Human Fetuses And Their Relationship To Gestational Age, Taner Zi̇ylan, Khalil Awadh Murshed Jan 2003

An Assessment Of Femur Growth Parameters In Human Fetuses And Their Relationship To Gestational Age, Taner Zi̇ylan, Khalil Awadh Murshed

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Fetal femur length assessment has been the subject of numerous investigations. Skeletal growth disturbances, estimation of fetal gestational age, developmental abnormality and detection of certain fetal congenital anomalies, and determination of population growth characteristics have been the objectives of different investigators' studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the crown-rump length (CRL) and fetal femur growth parameters and the gestational age during the second and third trimesters. Thirty dead normal immature and premature fetuses were selected from the fetal collection at the Anatomy Department of the Medical School, Selçuk University. Depending on the fetal CRL …
