Modifications Of Nitric Oxide And Sexual Behavior In Prenatally Stressed Male Rats, Stephen D. Miller Aug 1999

Modifications Of Nitric Oxide And Sexual Behavior In Prenatally Stressed Male Rats, Stephen D. Miller

Master's Theses

Normal male sexual differentiation is the culmination of perfectly timed, prenatal gonadal hormone release. Prenatal stress (PS) has a detrimental effect upon this process, obstructing the natural development of brain structures and sexual behavior. Prenatally-stressed male rats exhibit many physiological and neuroendocrinological differences when compared to control males. PS has a particularly harmful effect upon male sexual behavior, to which the neurotransmitter nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to be intimately involved. The present experiment examined whether PS reduces nNOS, the rate limiting enzyme of NO, in the medial preoptic area (rnPOA) of male rats, and whether administration of the …

The Development Of Pediococcus Species As Starters For Mozzarella Cheese, Shelby L. Caldwell May 1999

The Development Of Pediococcus Species As Starters For Mozzarella Cheese, Shelby L. Caldwell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bacteriophage infection of Streptococcus thermophilus is a growing concern in the mozzarella cheese industry. One method to control this problem may be to replace S. thermophilus with a starter coccus from a different genus of lactic acid bacteria. This work evaluated the possibility of using genetically modified Pediococcus spp. for this approach. Electroporation was used to introduce genes for lactose utilization from Lactococcus lactis into strains of P. acidilactici and P. pentosaceus. The resulting lactose-positive transformants, P. acidilactici SAL and P. pentosaceus SPL-2, rapidly reduced the pH of lactose broth, accumulated [14C]lactose at a rate higher than …

A Case Study In Museum Change: Power, Authority And Community Connected Exhibitions, Marilyn Cathy Solvay, Ph.D. Apr 1999

A Case Study In Museum Change: Power, Authority And Community Connected Exhibitions, Marilyn Cathy Solvay, Ph.D.

Educational Studies Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This dissertation is a study of museum change and examines the power of objects along with the authority of traditional exhibitions and the development of community-connected exhibitions. Community-connected exhibitions are explored to provide insight into reshaping the museum organization into a multicultural institution.

Method: A case study of a community-connected exhibition, "Becoming Americans: The Shapiro Story: 1898-1928," was conducted at Strawberry Banke, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, an outdoor history museum. Interviews were held with 25+ project participants: museum staff project team members, Shapiro family members, community members at large, and representatives from other community cultural institutions. This qualitative research project …

The Stages Of Development In The Portrayal Of African-Americans In Television Comedy, Rashawnda Deve Horn Jan 1999

The Stages Of Development In The Portrayal Of African-Americans In Television Comedy, Rashawnda Deve Horn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis involves a historical and critical examination of the utilization and development of African Americans in television sitcoms. By reexamining the initial research by Riggs (1991) and extending it, I will introduce a new stage focusing on contemporary sitcoms; According to Riggs' (1991), study on the utilization and development of African Americans in television can be divided into four stages that represent various periods in television history. Each stage is indicated by the transition in role, increase or decline in visibility, and the changes in their image or portrayal on television. By furthering Riggs study by examining contemporary sitcoms …

Detection Of Glial Interleukin-6 Release: Development Of A Novel Interleukin-6 Elisa, Kay-Lynn Bowman Jan 1999

Detection Of Glial Interleukin-6 Release: Development Of A Novel Interleukin-6 Elisa, Kay-Lynn Bowman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The development of an interleukin-6 (IL-6) enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assay resulted in a detection range of 1 ng/m1 to 10 ng/mL IL-6. The limit of detection (LOD) for IL-6 was 0.25 ng/mL. Troubleshooting techniques were attempted including matrix effects, non-specific binding, and coating buffer pH differences. In comparison to the ELISA, the LOD for IL-6 using the 7TD1 bioassay was 2--5 pg/mL. Therefore the 7TD1 bioassay was implemented for the experiments described in this study. IL-6 is a cytokine known to stimulate B-cell differentiation and to activate T-cells. IL-6 is elevated in inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) stimulates IL-6 …

The Canons Of Television: An Application Of The Five Canons Of Classical Rhetoric To Television Program Development, Jamey Todd Combs Jan 1999

The Canons Of Television: An Application Of The Five Canons Of Classical Rhetoric To Television Program Development, Jamey Todd Combs

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study constructs a methodology of television program development based on the five canons of classical rhetoric. Ronald Primeau (1979) first introduced the canons to the electronic media. His book uses the canons as a guide to television viewing. He argues that by understanding the television industry, an audience can better enjoy the medium. Expanding from Primeau's work, this study creates a method of program development based on the canons and uses the process to design a synopsis for a new television series.

Facilitating Social Development With Play Groups In Early Childhood Settings, Janet Avery Butz Jan 1999

Facilitating Social Development With Play Groups In Early Childhood Settings, Janet Avery Butz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the efficacy of using facilitated and nonfacilitated play groups as an intervention for facilitating the social interactive behaviors of young children with and without disabilities. Sixteen students aged four to five years from a community-based preschool on a university campus participated in the study. The facilitated play group was assigned a facilitator who was trained to encourage the social and play interactions among the children using the guided participation strategies adapted from the Integrated Play Groups Resource Manual (Wolfberg & Schuler, 1992). The nonfacilitated play group was assigned the same adult-whose only role was to monitor the …

Educator Study Groups: An Exploration Of An Alternative Method Of Preservice Teacher Development, Leah Mary Herner Jan 1999

Educator Study Groups: An Exploration Of An Alternative Method Of Preservice Teacher Development, Leah Mary Herner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study was conducted to investigate the effect study groups have on preservice teacher education. The participants were enrolled in ESP 444, The Special Education Student in the General Education Classroom. The study took place during a 9-week period; Forty-two students participated in this study. The study involved placing the students randomly into two groups. The lecture group received lectures from graduate students in special education. The study group worked together in groups to research and discuss inclusion of students with disabilities. All students took a knowledge-based pretest and attitude survey prior to beginning the study. All students took a …
