Individual And Developmental Differences In Susceptibility To The Irrelevant Speech Effect., Amanda Frances O'Bryan Aug 2012

Individual And Developmental Differences In Susceptibility To The Irrelevant Speech Effect., Amanda Frances O'Bryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Irrelevant Speech Effect (ISE) is a phenomenon in which the presentation of auditory materials (typically speech) impairs the serial recall of visually presented materials, either digits or letters. Although this effect has been replicated in a large number of studies, a wide range of individual differences in susceptibility to the auditory distracters has been found. The current study investigates four possible determinants of individual differences of the ISE: (1) The sequence length of the short-term memory (STM) task, (2) the content of the STM task and auditory distracter, (3) the STM capacity of the individual, and (4) developmental differences. …

Oxidative Status And Life History Trade-Offs In The Cooperatively Breeding Florida Scrub-Jay, Rebecca Suzanne Heiss Jul 2012

Oxidative Status And Life History Trade-Offs In The Cooperatively Breeding Florida Scrub-Jay, Rebecca Suzanne Heiss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oxidative damage has been linked to several degenerative diseases and, as such, the oxidative status of an organism has been widely used as a proxy for health state. Organisms able to resist attack by reactive oxygen species, or those with high levels of antioxidants, are typically assumed to be in better condition (i.e., better able to withstand oxidative damage to biomolecules). Little work, however, has focused on whether the oxidative status of an organism (particularly oxidative damage in free-living species) influences life history decisions. My research examined the interplay between oxidative status and life history characteristics in a free-living bird, …

The Relationship Between Risk And Resilience, Racial Microaggression, Ethnic Identity, And Well-Being In Young Adulthood, Shandra S. Forrest-Bank Jun 2012

The Relationship Between Risk And Resilience, Racial Microaggression, Ethnic Identity, And Well-Being In Young Adulthood, Shandra S. Forrest-Bank

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Young adulthood is the developmental period characterized by the transition from adolescence to the roles and responsibilities of adulthood. While most young adults experience positive growth and accomplishments, many others struggle, especially those with disadvantaged childhoods who lack financial, social, and emotional resources. Substance abuse, crime, educational failure, unemployment, and mental health problems are common among young adults. Unfortunately, many of these problems occur at disproportionately high rates for young people of color. Considerable knowledge of the child and adolescent risk and protective factors that contribute to the onset of problem behavior or to well-being during adolescence has been developed. …

Perceptions Of Gender In Young Consumers Of Animated Films., Katherine Barnes 1980- May 2012

Perceptions Of Gender In Young Consumers Of Animated Films., Katherine Barnes 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender stereotyping of two animated films by boys and girls (N=25). Based on Bern's (1983) gender schema theory, it was hypothesized that children would stereotype Aladdin as being for males and Pocahontas as being for females, based on the gender of the lead character. Interviews with participants (five to six years old) revealed that they did not gender stereotype the two films. A majority of both boys and girls liked the two films and felt they were for boys and girls. However, they did not think a girl could rescue another …

Gesture Production, Motor Skills, And Disfluencies Observed In Typically Developing Preschoolers, Christina Beatty Jan 2012

Gesture Production, Motor Skills, And Disfluencies Observed In Typically Developing Preschoolers, Christina Beatty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in gesture production has considerably increased in recent decades, yet few studies have examined the preschool population. Even fewer studies have examined the intriguing interaction between motor skills and gesture. The original intent of this study was to investigate the relationship of gesture and motor skills in individuals who stutter. However due to recruitment limitations the enrolled sample consists solely of typically developing preschoolers, 3:8 to 6:6 years. Data are presented on gestures and disfluencies during spontaneous speech, a cartoon narration, and a video narration. Additionally, disfluencies were observed during a procedural description task with restricted hand use and …

The Art Of Going Beyond In Hossana, Ethiopia, Megan Elizabeth Flowers Jan 2012

The Art Of Going Beyond In Hossana, Ethiopia, Megan Elizabeth Flowers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examine what education as development means for the men and women who live in Hossana town, Ethiopia. The ethnographic focus of this study is on understanding how education as development evokes different meanings for socio-political participation by rural students at a teacher training college and townspeople respectively. I discuss these conceptual differentiations in relation to the changes in beliefs and strategies that have occurred in Hossana and greater Ethiopia elsewhere over the course of several decades of local and global changes in the social order. I use the emic category of yilhunnta, as the social recognition …

Exploration Of The Balanced Scorecard As A Tool For Performance Measurement And Strategic Planning In Higher Education Development, Clifton Perry Moulds Jan 2012

Exploration Of The Balanced Scorecard As A Tool For Performance Measurement And Strategic Planning In Higher Education Development, Clifton Perry Moulds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to uncover information about the types of measurement and strategic planning models being used in higher education development, determine what measures are most important and effective for successful development practices, and explore the potential application of the Balanced Scorecard to higher education development operations. Survey data indicated a wide range of quantifiable metrics currently in use and opinions about measurements such as face-to-face visits, delivery of solicitations, and dollars raised. Personal interactions were considered the most important form of measurement, with financial outcomes falling closely behind. Very few survey respondents reported personal knowledge of the Balanced Scorecard, …

Development And Testing Of A Reconfigurable Gasoline Engine Control Module, Christopher John Kelly Jan 2012

Development And Testing Of A Reconfigurable Gasoline Engine Control Module, Christopher John Kelly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A dynamometer laboratory may typically face the following issues on a daily basis: the lack/availability of a calibration, software limiters, hardware failure codes/modes, hardware/software level incompatibilities and the time/knowledge required to troubleshoot these issues. A Reconfigurable Engine Controller (REC), which provides freedom to operate the engine under any condition, eliminates many of these issues. The result is an accelerated engine development process which includes engine mapping and/or testing new algorithms before implementation on production hardware. A REC can provide a flexible tailored controller to suit the needs of the individual testing application. This research used the dSPACE MicroAutoBox and RapidPro …
