Understanding The Next Generation Of Leaders: An Exploratory Study Of Constructions Of Leadership During Childhood, Claudia Escobar Vega Jan 2020

Understanding The Next Generation Of Leaders: An Exploratory Study Of Constructions Of Leadership During Childhood, Claudia Escobar Vega

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

This thesis looks at how constructions of leadership develop, by investigating children’s implicit representation of characteristics of leaders (Implicit Leadership Theories – ILTs) between five and 12 years old. ILTs refer to beliefs held by followers and leaders about how leaders behave in general, and what is expected from them (Eden & Leviatan, 1975; Shondrick, Dinh, & Lord, 2010; Sy et al., 2010). The examination of this area will enlighten the understanding of how future leaders perceive this social role and its characteristics (Ayman-Nolley & Ayman, 2005), and also contribute to research on leadership development.

Considerable strides have been made …

Strategies To Diversify And Develop The Economy Of Abu Dhabi And Gcc Countries: Application Of “Wheel Of Diversification” Model, Ahmed Saeed Al Nayeli Al Shamsi Jan 2020

Strategies To Diversify And Develop The Economy Of Abu Dhabi And Gcc Countries: Application Of “Wheel Of Diversification” Model, Ahmed Saeed Al Nayeli Al Shamsi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE) are fragile to the fluctuation of the petroleum prices. Every time with the drop in oil prices, the country’s financials and budgets gets strained, projects gets delayed and many of the government’s spending stops. The GCC countries have sensed the need to diversify the economies and have created visions and strategies for diversification of the economy. However, their attempts to diversify their economies for the past decades have met with little success.

For these countries to be successful in diversification they need to have strong factors …

The Influence Of Dietary Carotenoids On The Performance Of Captive Southern Corroboree Frogs (Pseudophryne Corroboree): Implications For Conservation, Emma Mcinerney Jan 2020

The Influence Of Dietary Carotenoids On The Performance Of Captive Southern Corroboree Frogs (Pseudophryne Corroboree): Implications For Conservation, Emma Mcinerney

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

Conservation breeding programs (CBPs) are considered essential for the recovery of threatened species. However, due in part to poor nutritional conditions experienced by individuals in captivity, CBPs often report poor success. In response, there has been a push to investigate how supplementation of captive diets with micronutrients may improve the success of CBPs. Dietary carotenoids in particular, are one group of micronutrients expected to improve the viability of captive individuals. This is largely owing to their antioxidant capacity, which allows them to limit the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the effectiveness of dietary carotenoids in improving fitness-determining …

Project Management Framework For Delivering Sustainable Residential Developments, Scott Redwood Jan 2015

Project Management Framework For Delivering Sustainable Residential Developments, Scott Redwood

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Sustainable residential development is the pursuit of increasing house liveability through form, function, materials, operation and comfort, while reducing the overall environmental impact of the development with marginal increases in capital cost. The ability to successfully design and construct sustainable residential developments is important, as the housing sector in Australia accounts for a large and escalating share of the nation's energy consumption. Achieving any significant reduction is greatly dependent on the knowledge and skill of the design consultant and engaged builder. It is generally accepted that only a minority of practitioners in the industry are experienced in the subject area …

Beauty Or Brains? The Impact Of Popular Culture On The Development Of Adolescent Rural Gifted Girls' Identity And Subsequent Talent Development, Denise May Wood Jan 2015

Beauty Or Brains? The Impact Of Popular Culture On The Development Of Adolescent Rural Gifted Girls' Identity And Subsequent Talent Development, Denise May Wood

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Adolescent gifted girls constantly engage with popular culture in their daily lives. All forms of media provide information about appearance, achievement, identity and success. The abundance of this information from visual, printed and audio sources could influence young girls in particular ways as they grapple with identity, and aspiration. Gifted girls face the added dilemma of expectation, both internally and externally, that suggests they must achieve in a way commensurate to their talent potential. Talent development models describe the elements of the process that support the achievement of demonstrated talent. This research set out to explore the lived experience of …

Values And Valued Action: Relationships With Perceived Parenting Styles And Well-Being At The Transition From High School To Early Adulthood, Kathryn Elizabeth Williams Jan 2014

Values And Valued Action: Relationships With Perceived Parenting Styles And Well-Being At The Transition From High School To Early Adulthood, Kathryn Elizabeth Williams

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Psychological interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) seek to help clients identify and clarify values and to activate behaviour in valued directions. Values inspire people to commit to and maintain personally meaningful behaviours, and to overcome barriers that may arise, such as difficult feelings and situations. It is therefore important to understand what people of different ages value, what factors might promote or inhibit valued action, and the relationship between valuing and well-being.

This thesis explored values development and well-being in a group of young Australians from their final year of high school to the end of their …

Indirect Benefits Of Women’S Education: Evidence From Bangladesh, Selina Akhter Jan 2012

Indirect Benefits Of Women’S Education: Evidence From Bangladesh, Selina Akhter

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Education, although contributes significantly to economic growth through human resource development, women education deserves attention for generating substantial benefits for the society by educating themselves as well as rearing healthy and better educated children as a potential workforce. However, the benefits of women’s education are commonly measured by increased productivity through enhanced labour market participation. In many developing countries, in fact, a non-linear relationship between women education and labour market participation is observed very often. Thus, studies do not always support the simple intuitive argument that increasing expenditure on women's education enhances economic development in such countries. This contradictory effect …

Impact Of Fipronil, A New Generation Pesticide, On Avian Development And Health, Malsha Kitulagodage Jan 2011

Impact Of Fipronil, A New Generation Pesticide, On Avian Development And Health, Malsha Kitulagodage

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Fipronil is a new-generation pesticide aerially applied in semi-arid and agricultural areas of Australia to control locust outbreaks. Seasonal conditions that give rise to locust plagues are also ideal for breeding birds, with over 100 different avian species observed in areas of locust control operations. Despite the potential for exposure, there is very little research regarding the toxicological effects of fipronil in birds. Available avian toxicity information shows a high species-specific variability in fipronil sensitivity across the few species tested, making it extremely difficult to predict the toxicity of fipronil on unstudied species at high risk of exposure in the …
