An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy Dec 1995

An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy

Theses & Honors Papers

This qualitative study investigated facilitators' opinions regarding facilitated communication (FC). Six individuals who have experience and/or training in the use of this method were interviewed. Issues discussed included FC's effectiveness for individuals other than those with autism, training prior to using the method, need for modifications in the method, and validity of the communication arising from the use of FC. Recurring themes were constructed from comments made during the course of the interviews. Each theme was supported by comments made by at least half of the facilitators. These themes were dissatisfaction with formal training, application to other populations, acknowledgement of …

The Portrayal Of Older Adults In The New York Times And The Omaha World-Herald, 1982 And 1992, Robert V. Whitmore Nov 1995

The Portrayal Of Older Adults In The New York Times And The Omaha World-Herald, 1982 And 1992, Robert V. Whitmore

Student Work

Images of older people in the news and entertainment media contribute to the way society learns about aging in our society. If the daily newspaper is considered a record of daily lives, then the portrayal of older people in newspaper can show us how we view the aging process and how that view changes over time. There has been little research into how newspapers portray older people, and that research has reached little consensus about the picture of aging we receive from our newspapers. This study seeks to add to the current literature about newspaper portrayal of people over 60 …

Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Stephen E. Brown Oct 1995

Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Stephen E. Brown

Sabbaticals

The sabbatical will be built around analysis and study of the speeches and great speakers of the mid-1800's in the United States, among them Lincoln, Davis, Lee, Grant, and Frederick Douglas. Theirs was an era of great speeches and volatile public opinion. I believe their words and presentations were as much responsible for the definition of America as those of Washington or Jefferson. Even the average soldier displayed language skills of surprising quality. These speeches, poems and correspondences effectively "sold" the American Civil War to the nation. They inspire my curiosity as to how and why they were so effective …

A Study Of Women's Compliance-Gaining Behaviors In Violent And Non-Violent Relationships, Jill E. Rudd, Patricia A. Burant Oct 1995

A Study Of Women's Compliance-Gaining Behaviors In Violent And Non-Violent Relationships, Jill E. Rudd, Patricia A. Burant

Communication Faculty Publications

Recent research by communication scholars has investigated the dynamics of abusive spousal relationships (Chandler, 1986; Infante, Chandler, & Rudd, 1989; Infante, Chandler-Sabourin, Rudd, & Shannon, 1990; Rancer & Niemasz, 1988; Rudd, Burant, & Beatty, 1994; Sabourin, Infante, & Rudd, 1993). Infante and his colleagues have suggested that those involved in violent relationships communicate differently with their partners than those involved in nonviolent relationships. Based on this prior research, it seems important for communication scholars to further investigate the communication behaviors of individuals involved in violent relationships. This current study seeks to advance the family violence research by comparing the types …

A Flight Into Technology: An Investigation Of Building And Telecommunication Technology, Bruce A. T. Siska Oct 1995

A Flight Into Technology: An Investigation Of Building And Telecommunication Technology, Bruce A. T. Siska

Architecture Senior Theses

"A new physical infrastructure to support activities based on communications and the transmission of information is being developed. Part of this infrastructure includes the construction of "intelligent" buildings that are seen to play as important a role in improving of office workers as automation has played on the shop floor of manufacturing industry. The term "intelligent" is used to describe buildings which provide an adaptive environment of high quality, energy efficiency, security and safety, permitting optimized information flows - both internally and externally - so that its functionality is largely independent of location."

Repellents: Integrating Sensory Modalities, Michael L. Avery Aug 1995

Repellents: Integrating Sensory Modalities, Michael L. Avery

National Wildlife Research Center Repellents Conference 1995

Recommendations for managing wildlife damage situations often involve application of multiple methods or techniques. The basis for such recommendations is unclear as there is little evidence that such combinations of methods work more effectively than the individual methods alone. In order to improve beyond hit or miss repellent applications, we should adopt principles exhibited in nature and develop repellent treatments based on the design of signals used in animal communications. In particular, characteristics that increase detectability, discriminability, and memorability should be identified and incorporated into repellent design. To do so, the sensory capabilities of the target species need to be …

Norway Rats' Communication About Foods And Feeding Sites, Bennett G. Galef Jr. Aug 1995

Norway Rats' Communication About Foods And Feeding Sites, Bennett G. Galef Jr.

National Wildlife Research Center Repellents Conference 1995

After interacting with a recently fed "demonstrator" rat (Rattus norvegicus), a naive "observer" rat exhibits substantial enhancement of its preference for whatever food its demonstrator ate. Such social effects on food preference in rats are surprisingly robust and able to reverse both congenital flavor preferences and poison-induced, learned flavor aversions. Analysis of the pheromonal signals emitted by demonstrator rats that alter the food preferences of their observers indicates that experience of CS2 (a substance present in rat breath) together with the odor of a food is sufficient to enhance an observer rat's subsequent preference for the food. …

A Study Of Broadcast-Industry Personnel's Sources Of Occupational Stress And Interest In Worksite Stress Management Techniques, Kathleen A. Vampola Jul 1995

A Study Of Broadcast-Industry Personnel's Sources Of Occupational Stress And Interest In Worksite Stress Management Techniques, Kathleen A. Vampola

Student Work

This exploratory study investigated worksite stress and stress management interest within the television industry, and built on sociological theory pertinent to media organizations’ pressures. A self-administered survey instrument was internally distributed at two local commercial television stations. From the purposive sample, 58 subjects (23 men, and 33 women) completed and returned questionnaires. Subjects identified time pressures as their major source of occupational stress, followed by management conflict. Time and management pressures also represented about 70 percent of personnel’s perceived barriers to practice of worksite stress management techniques. Perceptions of worksite stress management interest differed between departments. While further research is …

Connections: Some Implications Of Informal Communication Networks For Congregational Nurture, David B. Jackson May 1995

Connections: Some Implications Of Informal Communication Networks For Congregational Nurture, David B. Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An integral part of the dynamics of congregational development is the quest for deeper, maturer spiritual life. The biblical image of the church as a body conveys the "oughtness" of such progress, growth being the sure sign of the presence of life. A persistent question exists concerning the "how'' of promoting that search. The thesis of this project is that the discovery and diagramming of informal t communication networks within a church provides an effective avenue through which to nurture the spiritual life of the members. These naturally occurring links between congregants carry less resistance than do formal channels of …

Effects Of Therapist Gender On Client Communications In Marital Therapy, Laurel C. Agee May 1995

Effects Of Therapist Gender On Client Communications In Marital Therapy, Laurel C. Agee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to explore how therapist and client gender are associated with communication behaviors of males and females in marital therapy. The majority of research on therapist gender issues has been conducted with individual clients. Few data exist on the effects of therapist gender within marital therapy. This study examined the communication patterns of couples within a marital therapy setting and the influence of therapist gender on those patterns. Forty-six 10-minute videotape segments of marital therapy were coded for communication patterns. Coded verbal statement categories included the verbal behaviors of agreement, supportive, solution of problems, and …

Prime-Time Entertainment And Values: Network Television As New Religion., Robin C. Mills Apr 1995

Prime-Time Entertainment And Values: Network Television As New Religion., Robin C. Mills

Student Work

The influence of mass media, particularly the portrayal of value-related issues in prime-time entertainment television, has provoked much recent debate concerning a perceived impoverishment of values in society. Recently, current and popular prime-time television shows have been cited for a presentation of values which do not reflect values endemic to the teachings of most mainstream religions. The present study examined content in a sample of prime-time network entertainment television to see how value portrayal compares to the values associated with basic Judea-Christian tenets. Television is considered a common cultural storyteller and therefore is thought to be a reflection of society …
