The 1861-1862 diary has a store ledger from July 9, 1861 to August 26, 1862 and a diary from September 23 to November 11, 1862, while the 1873 diary covers the whole year. The collection also contains high quality photographs of one room school houses of Cabell County, West Virginia, an audio cassette oral history, books, and pen nibs.

This collection consists of copies and transcriptions of three diaries, spanning January 1861- April 1863, of Private, later Captain, Archibald D. Norris of the 7th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, Co. K during the Civil War, ending with the Fredericksburg campaign. The diaries are extensive, and cover details about the war and specific battles as well as camp life. There are also entries about Norris’ evolving feelings about the state of the union. According to a note in the collection, there are a significant proportion of West Virginia related content in the diaries.

R. Redding Papers, 1861-1865 and the William Thomas Sutherlin Papers, 1842-1892. The Redding materials are from 1861 while Redding was stationed in Virginia, to his wife, Elizabeth M. This collection contains documents and correspondence by John Seeley of New Jersey, and Jonathan Taylor of the 24th Ohio Infantry, Co. D. Jonathan Taylor materials include discharge papers from June 1864 and a letter to his sisters and brother in Chattanooga, Tennessee from March 1864 discussing camp life. John Seeley materials include an envelope to Mrs. Charles Seeley (his mother) in Bridgeton, New Jersey, as well as two letters, both to his mother. The letters, from March 1862 and December 23rd of an unknown year, cover camp life, including Christmas, religion, and daily events among other topics.

The collection is divided into two series: Series I: Special Commission on Boundaries, Tacna-Arica Arbitration Papers and Series II: Morrow Family Personal Papers.

The first series pertains the 1922 request by Chile and Peru for the United States to arbitrate their land dispute over the provinces of Tacna, Arica, and Tarata. Jay Johnson Morrow was the chairman of the special commission arbitrating the boundary dispute between Chile and Peru from 1925 to 1929. Collection materials include historic maps and treaties, copies of geological surveys, field reports, annexation documents, and reports of arbitration meetings. This series includes materials in Spanish.

Also included is a copy of an 1862 letter to “Friend Rothgeb” from R. L. Stewart regarding a steamboat shipment. Also included are copies of envelopes, a pay stub/check, an Army 50 cent note, and promotion form for Thomas A. Mau(l?)sly to the rank of Colonel in the 18th Regiment of West Virginia Militia.

Given that all collection items are copies, legibility can be limited but is overall high.

The record book is a printed form book entitled, “Barrett’s Form of Soldiers’ Relief Record, Being a Record of Resident Indigent Union Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, and Wives, Widows and Minor Children of Same, Entitled to Relief under an Act passed March 16th, 1887.” Twelve pages record payments to `resident indigent Union soldiers, sailors and marines, and wives, widows and minor children of same. . .' Barton, the self-made physician of Syracuse, Ohio, including a history of the Fourth Regt. West Va. Vol. Inf’y, with an account of Col. Lightburn’s Retreat” published by Charleston, West Virginia Printing Company in 1890. The document does not cover Barton’s personal life, and only discusses his time as a doctor for his regiment in the Civil War. The Aleshire Family Papers consist mainly of correspondence dating from 1863 to 1888. Many of the letters are written by various members of the family to Joseph Aleshire as he traveled the Midwest, buying wheat for the family flour mill. Most of these letters concern fluctuations of the wheat market and other business matters.

There are a number of letters from Mary Aleshire to her parents and brothers, dating from 1863 to 1878. These describe her life at college in Cincinnati, and later, upon her return to Gallipolis, her involvement with social and family matters.

The Morgan family papers consist of business, general and family correspondence, as well as legal and financial papers. Much of the business correspondence, dating from 1840 to 1935, is concerned with John Morgan's business ventures, first as a store keeper in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and later as a farmer in Putnam Country, Virginia, now West Virginia. The general correspondence consists of letters from friends and dates from 1843 until 1900.
