“They Were Never Silent” will explore the inner workings and impact of both top-down and bottom-up approaches to Urban Renewal for African Americans in the city of Buffalo. For decades, government funded projects that arose in the name of “saving” inner-cities have been guilty of concentrating poverty into centralized areas, directing monies toward downtown development that dislocated families, excessive housing clearance, and modernizing segregation in the form of public housing projects. This thesis investigates how performers on the television show Moonshiners challenge essentialist characterizations of the Appalachian South as a counterpoint to American nationalism. While many may believe that Moonshiners’ producers merely exploit regional identity to attract audiences, the performers claim a southern Appalachian heritage while redefining what it means to be a southern Appalachian person in the present moment. Furthermore, while the show relies on an imagined past South to create a genealogy that renders performers the authentic inheritors of moonshining’s cultural history, performers present a modern-day Appalachian South that participates in the national economy. Two-thirds of the way through Object Lessons (2012), Robyn Wiegman's provocative study of the institutional and ideological development of what she names identity-based modes of inquiry in US colleges and universities, the author recounts a 2003 trip she took to Leiden to attend the inaugural meeting of the International American Studies Association. The electoral upheavals of 1894 and 1896 resulting in Republican Party dominance within West Virginia and around the nation were not just a sudden occurrence. They resulted, in part, because voters in key border states shifted their votes from the Democratic to the Republican Party. West Virginia's Republican Party had the greatest success in maintaining its long term influence after 1896 despite the fact that since 1872 it enjoyed little success. Before the late 1840's, no white men had settled the area of southwestern Iowa at the point where Harrison Country is now located. Moreover, only a few white men had cast eye upon its valleys, inhabited only by Indians and wild animals. Probably the first explorers to set foot in the area were Lewis and Clark, who, in 1804, ordered their men to pitch camp just below the mouth of the Soldier River in what is now Harrison County. To define the motives for any human migration is often a formidable, but nevertheless an inspiring an challenging undertaking. This study, therefore, is devoted to a detailed examination of the events which led to the highly significant migration from the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys to the Oregon country in 1843. I shall demonstrate that this, the first home-building immigration to the Pacific Northwest, was not a mere response to leadership, but was stimulated by a deep-seated frontier force based upon the desire of the inhabitants of the western states to better their lot.
