A high-throughput high-sensitivity optical technique for measuringmagnetostriction of thin-film composition-spread samples has been developed. It determines the magnetostriction by measuring the induced deflection of micromachined cantilever unimorph samples. Magnetostrictionmeasurements have been performed on as-deposited Fe–Ga and Fe–Ga–Al thin-film composition spreads. The thin-film Fe–Ga spreads display a similar compositional variation of magnetostriction as bulk. A previously undiscovered peak in magnetostriction at low Ga content was also observed and attributed to a maximum in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Magnetostrictive mapping of the Fe–Ga–Al ternary system reveals the possibility of substituting up to 8at.%Al in Fe70Ga30 without significant degradation of magnetostriction.

Fuzzy Logic Based Model For Predicting Surface Roughness Of Machined Al-Si-Cu-Fe Die Casting Alloy Using Different Additives-Turning Jan 2015

Fuzzy Logic Based Model For Predicting Surface Roughness Of Machined Al-Si-Cu-Fe Die Casting Alloy Using Different Additives-Turning

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

This paper presents a fuzzy logic artificial intelligence technique for predicting the machining performance of Al-Si-Cu-Fe die casting alloy treated with different additives including strontium, bismuth and antimony to improve surface roughness. The Pareto-ANOVA optimization method was used to obtain the optimum parameter conditions for the machining process. Experiments were carried out using oblique dry CNC turning. The machining parameters of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut were optimized according to surface roughness values. The results indicated that a cutting speed of 250 m/min, a feed rate of 0.05 mm/rev, and a depth of cut of 0.15 mm …

Formation Of Circular Optical Membranes Under Free-Form Yielding, Christopher Tuan, David White Mar 2014

Formation Of Circular Optical Membranes Under Free-Form Yielding, Christopher Tuan, David White

Christopher Y. Tuan

High‐quality optical reflector surfaces are attainable with the use of pressure‐formed membranes. The formation technique involves gradual application of fluid pressure on initially flat, simply supported circular membranes until a desirable center deflection is reached. After the fluid is removed, a uniform pressure is subsequently applied to offset the surface slope error. Empirical testing of membrane‐forming technique was conducted at two scales to define the critical process variables that controlled material yielding. Aluminum membranes with 54‐in. (1.4‐m) diameter were constructed for the smaller scale and with 144‐in. (3.7‐m) diameter for the larger scale. The experiments were carried out with the …

The Wear Behavior Of Cross-Linked Uhmwpe Under Dry And Bovine Calf Serum-Lubricated Conditions Dec 2012

The Wear Behavior Of Cross-Linked Uhmwpe Under Dry And Bovine Calf Serum-Lubricated Conditions

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

The present study was performed to investigate the effects of gamma radiation on the wear behavior of unirradiated and irradiated ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) against Ti-6Al-4V under dry and lubricated conditions at different applied loads. The UHMWPE specimens were exposed directly to nominal doses of 0, 25, 40, 50, and 100 kGy. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of the worn surface of UHMWPE and Ti-6Al-4V was performed to understand the mechanism of wear involved between the contact surfaces during wear testing. From the wear test results, there were significant differences between the wear of unirradiated UHMWPE and UHMWPE irradiated at 25, …

Aluminum. History & Metallurgy, Fathi Habashi Feb 2008

Aluminum. History & Metallurgy, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

The present volume is a collection of some papers published by the author during the period 1993 – 2008. They are reproduced here in facsimile edition arranged under the headings: The Pioneers, Metallurgy, and Selected Topics. In the last section a paper on the position of aluminum in the Periodic Table is included another on gallium since it is mainly produced as a by-product of the aluminum industry, and the history of aluminum as illustrated on postage stamps. Also included are selected chapters on the chemistry of aluminum and some of its compounds. The collection gives a rapid and fully …
