Lost In Austen: An Immersive Approach To Pride & Prejudice, Erica Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

This paper is an account of the Theatre VCU mainstage production of Pride & Prejudice, in which I played the roles of Mrs. Bennet and of the vocal coach. In order to address the various skill levels of the cast, I planned to coach the production in a manner inspired by immersion language learning programs, with the cast speaking in dialect throughout the rehearsal process so as to learn the necessary vocal skills and to grow together as a theatrical ensemble. When the director of Pride & Prejudice was not receptive to this plan, I had to compromise and adapt …

The Phenomenal Presence Of Invisible Legs: Beckett And The Actor, Annie Michael Paladino Mar 2012

The Phenomenal Presence Of Invisible Legs: Beckett And The Actor, Annie Michael Paladino

Annie Michael Paladino

Samuel Beckett did not write a theory of acting; nevertheless, his plays raise many longstanding questions and tensions regarding the actor's craft. This thesis examines the actor's creative process in Beckett's theatre. Drawing from the accounts of numerous actors, the author's own experience as a performer in Beckett's Happy Days, and performance studies theories, this thesis contends that the actor in Beckett's theatre must confront three specific dichotomies: inner life versus physical score, presentational versus representational modes of performance, and phenomenal body versus semiotic body. By positioning Beckett's theatre in dialogue with the writings of Konstantin Stanislavsky and Bertolt Brecht, …

A Performance Study And Analysis Of The Role Of Soot In The Marriage Of Bette And Boo, Jodi Coleman Jan 2008

A Performance Study And Analysis Of The Role Of Soot In The Marriage Of Bette And Boo, Jodi Coleman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1985, Christopher Durang created a master work titled The Marriage of Bette and Boo which was described by The New Yorker as a "brimming cornucopia of brilliant lines." Frank Rich of the New York Times called it "so speedy and chipper that it could almost be mistaken for a Bob Fosse musical." Douglas Watt of the New York Daily News referred to it as a "farcical study of a disastrous marriage, marked by still births, insanity in the family and divorce." These critical responses indicate the necessity to maintain the complexity of the character of Soot without allowing her …

Transitions: Starting The Second, Full Circle, Mary Colleen Vreeland

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will focus on the transitional influences that have led me to start the second circle of my professional life. It is an open and honest exploration of the back-story of my life and the academic and professional influences that led me to seek a Master of Fine Arts Degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. With no parallels and therefore no excuses insinuated, I will be open and dissect more of myself as the whole focus of the thesis in hopes of offering clarity to myself and other mature and disabled students seeking to become a better teacher and artist.
