Jews And Urban Life, Leonard J. Greenspoon Dec 2023

Jews And Urban Life, Leonard J. Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Jews and Urban Life recognizes that throughout their long history, Jews have often inhabited cities. The reality of this urban experience ranged from ghetto restrictions to robust participation in a range of civic and social activities. Essays in this collection present relevant examples from within the Jewish community itself, moving historically from the biblical period to the modern-day State of Israel. Taking a comparative approach while recognizing the particulars of individual instances, authors examine these phenomena from a wide variety of approaches, genres, and media. Interdisciplinary and accessibly written, the articles display a multitude of instances throughout history showing the …

Mackie, Martin, And Inus In The Morning: Explaining Mackie’S Inus Conditions Through The Humor Of Demetri Martin, Steven Gimbel Dec 2023

Mackie, Martin, And Inus In The Morning: Explaining Mackie’S Inus Conditions Through The Humor Of Demetri Martin, Steven Gimbel

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Distinguishing necessary and sufficient conditions can be challenging to undergraduate logic and critical thinking students. Explaining J. L. Mackie’s notion of INUS conditions—insufficient but necessary parts of unnecessary but sufficient conditions—is an even more difficult concept to understand. It is helpful to have memorable examples that not only clarify the concept, but make it easy to remember. Law student turned stand-up comedian Demetri Martin uses necessary, sufficient, and INUS conditions to construct absurdist jokes. These jokes provide effective tools for making Mackie’s notion understandable and memorable.

Zelph Nov 2023

Zelph

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In recent years, discussions of Book of Mormon geography have concentrated on limited areas in Mesoamerica. The story of "Zelph, the white Lamanite," is frequently cited as evidence that the Nephites occupied the entire North American continent and fought some of their final battles near the Illinois River. Who was Zelph, and are his bones relevant to the Book of Mormon? Researcher Kenneth Godfrey shows why one should be cautious in drawing specific geographical conclusions from this incident.

Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman Sep 2023

Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. Chapter two narrates an untold history of the newspaper’s early …

‘Public Enemy Number One’: The Resistance Of Japanese Americans In Concentration Camps, 1942-1946, Robert K. Coleman

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper explores the defiance of Japanese Americans who were unlawfully imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II, challenging the Model Minority Myth that portrayed them as docile and silent actors. Using court cases, personal stories, newspaper articles, and film analysis, the paper shows how Japanese Americans actively defied their unlawful situation and resisted their oppressors.

Project Updates

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

The Book of Mormon Bibliography, an index of all serious studies about the Book of Mormon, should be ready for distribution this fall . It already contains over 1,850 entries. This monumental bibliography will be the first relatively comprehensive listing of articles, papers, book and theses dealing with the Book of Mormon. It will provide a solid base for the Book of Mormon Encyclopedia and facilitate other organized research on Book of Mormon topics as well as guide development of the FARMS Reprint series. It should also help prevent unnecessary duplication of research. When it is available, we hope many …

Bronx Jewish History Project

Beth Anshen Braunstein was born in the Bronx 1954. Both sets of her grandparents immigrated from Russia, with one grandmother stopping in Alexandria, Egypt along the journey and learning Italian, which she used to communicate with Italian families in the Bronx. Her mother’s family lived and had a children’s clothing store on Bathgate Avenue. His father had a store next door and, after they were married, her parents had a health food store off of Pelham Parkway. Braunstein first lived on Bathgate before the family moved to Thieriot Avenue, near Parkchester. In her teenage years she became more religious, attending …

Old Series: Volume 6, Number 2 (May/June 1997)

Journal of Textual Reasoning

In this issue we continue the discussion of JUDAISM IN THE CURRICULUM, a discussion initiated by Aryeh Cohen who solicited contributions on this matter. We would like to renew this call for submissions. The matter is important and concerns most of us. How is Judaism represented in institutions of higher (or lower?) learning? What does it mean to educate ABOUT rather than IN Judaism? What about the inside vs. the outside perspective? How much critical scholarship should be part of our courses if our students often lack much of the traditional knowledge or familiarity with content of the sacred literature …

Old Series: Volume 5, Number 4 (December 1996)

Journal of Textual Reasoning

This is the final issue of Textual Reasoning for 1996. In it we introduce you to a recent restatement of the central doctrine of the Jewish rationalist tradition, the doctrine of ethical monotheism. Lenn Goodman’s book GOD OF ABRAHAM, erudite and elegantly written, is a philosophical book and a work whose philosophical statements are formulated out of an engaged reading of the classical Jewish sources. In this sense it is an instance of ‘textual reasoning.’ Furthermore, with its emphasis on the ongoing project of a mutual interpretation of the God of the Hebrew prophets and the Platonic idea of the …
