The Need And Value Of Adding A Gifted Music Curriculum To Education Using Music Technology, Haven K. Clippinger
The Need And Value Of Adding A Gifted Music Curriculum To Education Using Music Technology, Haven K. Clippinger
Masters Theses
Research in music education has increased drastically since its emergence in the 20th century. Philosophers developed detailed music education philosophies, and music education changed in American education. In addition, the 20th century also brought an increased awareness of gifted students in the school system. Musical talent has been considered a gifted quality, yet there appears to be minimal research on gifted students in music classes. Initial research was conducted to examine literature on gifted music. This research served to provide a greater link between music and gifted education by utilizing a music technology curriculum for gifted music students. This project …
Non-Christian, Japanese College Students’ Perspectives Of Engaging With God Through The Participatory Components Of Christian Worship, Jacqueline Leigh Bencke
Non-Christian, Japanese College Students’ Perspectives Of Engaging With God Through The Participatory Components Of Christian Worship, Jacqueline Leigh Bencke
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study seeks to examine the extent to which non-Christian college students in Japan perceive their engagement with the biblical God while participating in daily chapel services at Kyūshū Lutheran College. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, analyzing survey and focus group data to explore whether a relationship exists between students’ participation in chapel committee activities and their perceived spiritual engagement. Responses to Lynn Underwood’s Daily Spiritual Experience Survey, the Centrality of Religiosity Scale, and the Centrality of Buddhist Religiosity Scale are combined to create a general spiritual profile of respondents. Worship leaders and missionaries who are in positions of …

For 30 years, New York's sonideros have been making noise on the central avenues of the city's Mexican and Latino ecosystems. The movement, made up of the sonidero (translated literally as "soundman"), his assistants, promoters, fans and dancers, has created a subculture that for a long time defined the relationship between the migrant and his native home in Mexico. Thirty years later, I explore how the movement has evolved, the traits that have distinguished it from the Mexican sonidero movement, and how it continues to flourish under a new generation of deejays.
Music In The Holocaust: The Roles Of Music In Nazi Concentration Camps, Jennifer L. Lefleur
Music In The Holocaust: The Roles Of Music In Nazi Concentration Camps, Jennifer L. Lefleur
Theses and Dissertations
The atrocities and horrors of the Holocaust are well-known and well-documented. Hitler’s “Final Solution” was to eradicate all Jews from Europe, and to implement this, the Nazis built six extermination camps in Poland. These camps, and others throughout Europe, mass-killed millions of humans between 1933 and 1945. Prisoners in these camps were consumed by torture, terror, and murder on a daily basis. Although most survivor accounts detail the role music played in these camps, it had been in the last twenty to thirty years that musicologists and historians have really delved into this subject.
While there were different types of …

Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions are traditional forms of intellectual property that are closely related to copyright within the scope of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Among the various types of Expressions of Folklore in Indonesia, traditional music and songs are one of them. Traditional music is music or sound art found in various regions of Indonesia that is born and develops and is passed down from one generation to the next. Cello In Film And Television Music, Annastasia M. Yoshida
Cello In Film And Television Music, Annastasia M. Yoshida
Composition/Recording Projects
Throughout the ages, the cello has had a specific role in symphonies, operas, musicals, and pop concerts. In the last century, one of the fastest-growing music practices has been soundtracks to film and television shows. String instruments and specifically the cello hold an integral role within this type of music. In this project I present a study on the use of the cello in film and television show music, using eight representative soundtrack cues. In this project, I seek to do an extensive study of the use of cello within film and TV show music. I have chosen a selection …
Noted With Honor: Intersections Between Theology, Music Therapy, Psychotherapy, And Original Music Compositions For Hospice Patients, Stanton Nelson
Noted With Honor: Intersections Between Theology, Music Therapy, Psychotherapy, And Original Music Compositions For Hospice Patients, Stanton Nelson
Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses
This thesis investigates the intersections between theology, music therapy, and psychotherapy when creating a music composition that honors a hospice patient’s walk of faith. A pioneer organization inspiring this thesis is Swan Songs in Austin, Texas, where musical moments are created for the patient and family. However, its model is primarily based on collating previously composed pieces for recitals without a personalized honoring of the patient’s witness of faith. Noted with Honor is an emerging non-profit organization that creates an original work that reflects upon the testimony of the patient and forms a new narrative towards the end of one’s …
How Formal Music Training Affects Executive Functions In Middle School Band Students, Zachary C. Anderson
How Formal Music Training Affects Executive Functions In Middle School Band Students, Zachary C. Anderson
Honors College Theses
My thesis project explored the relationship between a formal music training experience and executive functions in a middle school band classroom. Executive functions are working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility which allow us to gain and focus our attention on specific tasks. Participants in the study were two groups of middle school students: a sixth-grade class with no previous musical experience and an eighth-grade class with two years of band classes. I measured changes in students' overall success on cognitive tests over a two-month span to observe at what point music training begins to impact executive functions. I found significant …
Same As It Ever Was: An Exploration And Demonstration Of Techniques For Repurposing And Modernizing Advanced Musical Vocabulary In Mainstream Commercial Music, Aidan Scrivens
Composition/Recording Projects
In the market for tertiary level commercial music education, educators find themselves pulled between students' commercial stylistic interests and the seemingly incommensurable genres better suited to exploring advanced theoretical concepts and vocabulary. This divide can lead to a motivational deficiency in a student that, in turn, can hinder their development and render their collegiate experience less worth the expense. In the interest of combating this potential motivational deficiency, this recording project and accompanying paper explores and demonstrates the process of modernizing and recontextualizing material found in these less commercially mainstream genres. By adapting vocabulary and approaches learned from the transcription …

The Planets, Reimagined: Translating Science Into Music, Kaitlyn Wincup
Honors Projects
Inspired by Gustav Holst’s The Planets, this project analyzed the qualitative properties of the planets in our Solar System and translated them into a composition, created by Connor Gibbs, to represent an overall aural depiction of each planet. Where Holst created an astrological depiction of each of the planets, this piece is an astronomical depiction that broadens the perspectives of its listeners.
Listening To Music While Studying, Does It Help Or Not?, Kaleb Phillips
Listening To Music While Studying, Does It Help Or Not?, Kaleb Phillips
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Many college students listen to music. Many say that it helps them focus on their schoolwork and helps them retain knowledge. When I started this research, I wanted to find ways for me to help focus on my schoolwork. I get distracted easily and find joy when I listen to some kinds of music. Does music help you focus? Does it depend on the type of music, or can it be any type? Does it work for everyone? Research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary research. For this study, I also performed my …

I performed a vocal recital as part of my final requirements towards my Music Education degree and developed an additional program including research on the works I performed. The program consisted of biographies for composers Haydn, Schumann, Fauré, Obradors, and Beach, additional context on specific songs, and translations of songs not sung in English. I created this program in order to provide more detailed information for audience members who were interested in further enrichment or had particular curiosity for any performed works. This recital was a culmination of my efforts in the vocal department of the School of Music throughout …

Perceptual And Conceptual Structures In Thea Musgrave's Green, Isabel Bohrer
Perceptual And Conceptual Structures In Thea Musgrave's Green, Isabel Bohrer
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
Green, by Thea Musgrave, traces the interaction between two contrasting musical ideas. The opening of the piece presents the first idea: a lyrical section that highlights the importance of the pitch class E within the idea. This is interrupted by the second, discordant, idea which initially presents as a low F tremolo. Throughout the first half of the work, these ideas interact. The second half of the work further explores the melodies developed from the more discordant ideas, completely omitting the lyrical theme.
Within this piece there is a framework based upon the use of octatonic collections and modified …
Rediscovering Argentine Repertoire Written In The 1930s: A Performative Study Of Concert Piano Works By Lita Spena And Celia Torrá, Florencia Zuloaga
Rediscovering Argentine Repertoire Written In The 1930s: A Performative Study Of Concert Piano Works By Lita Spena And Celia Torrá, Florencia Zuloaga
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
A survey of the piano repertoire written during the decade of 1930 in Argentina reveals the rising number of several works written by women composers. For the first time, the years that followed the inauguration of the National Conservatory of Music and Theater in 1924 witnessed a professionalization of women in the field of music composition, and two figures made great strides in this regard. Celia Torrá and Lita Spena stood out among the first female composition students at the National Conservatory and some of the first to succeed as professional composers. Furthermore, they were among the first women to …

Escape Beneath: An Original Game Score Inspired By An Analysis Of Garry Schyman's Music, Daniel Cooper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Video-game music has grown into a vast array of different styles, sounds, and applications. As a newer field of music, game scoring has begun to receive high acclaim. Garry Schyman has become one of the most successful composers within the video-game industry. His music has received many awards and nominations throughout the years. Despite this, research and analysis into his compositions and techniques are almost non-existent. This thesis studies his techniques within the video-game scores for BioShock, BioShock 2, BioShock Infinite, Middle Earth Shadow of War, and Torn; and then applies them into an original …
Holiday Jazz Lead Sheets, Tumaini Sango
Holiday Jazz Lead Sheets, Tumaini Sango
Honors Projects
Featured in this manuscript are 10 Holiday songs in lead sheet form. Each song has lyrics for the players and audience to sing along to. A left-hand accompaniment is paired with each song, which focuses on a different aspect of jazz piano playing. The accompaniments include sample bass lines, introductory left-hand voicings, chord shapes, and rhythm patterns. Pedagogically, this manuscript serves a wide range of playing levels. First, the accompaniments are great for young and beginning jazz pianists, who are learning how to add flavor to their right-hand melodies. Secondly, the lead sheets on their own offer a great supplement …
“Ici On Chante En Français”: Giving A Voice To Cajun Culture, Tessa Espinosa
“Ici On Chante En Français”: Giving A Voice To Cajun Culture, Tessa Espinosa
Dissertations
“Ici on parle Français” (“French is spoken here”) is a popular adage in South Louisiana and can be seen on signage and T-shirts in mom-and-pop stores throughout the heart of Cajun territory. This phrase reflects cultural pride and tenacity in a small but hearty group of people whose identity was nearly stripped away. Musical settings of Cajun French verse constituted a vital part of this culture. Why is this music important? It exists as historical preservation, a means to explore roots in a time when so many are rootless. These songs have been passed down through oral history for generations. …
Tragedies Of The Cultural Commons, Etienne C. Toussaint
Tragedies Of The Cultural Commons, Etienne C. Toussaint
Faculty Publications
In the United States, Black cultural expressions of democratic life that operate within specific historical-local contexts, yet reflect a shared set of sociocultural mores, have been historically crowded out of the law and policymaking process. Instead of democratic cultural discourse occurring within an open and neutral marketplace of ideas, the discursive production and consumption of democratic culture in American politics has been rivalrous. Such rivalry too often enables dominant White supremacist cultural beliefs, values, and practices to exercise their hegemony upon law’s production and meaning. The result has been tragedy for politically disempowered and socioeconomically excluded communities.

This paper on the musical implementation of additive synthesis seeks to explore and divulge what exactly is additive synthesis and what makes it distinct from other types of synthesis. A part of it is dedicated to making clear and palatable case for additive synthesis and is followed by a discussion of how and why various artists have implemented additive synthesis into their music, and how to recreate their techniques.
The Stability Of The Speech-To-Song Illusion And Individual Differences, Rodica R. Constantine
The Stability Of The Speech-To-Song Illusion And Individual Differences, Rodica R. Constantine
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Music and language are easily distinguishable for the average listener despite sharing many structural acoustic similarities. The Speech-to-Song illusion can give rise to both musical and linguistic percepts by inducing a perceptual switch after listening to multiple repetitions of a natural spoken utterance. As such, it has been used as a tool to control for low-level acoustic characteristics previously shown to drive lateralized brain responses regardless of domain-type, helping to disambiguate the contribution of high- versus low-level processes in both music and speech perception. However, there exists a lack of research on how large a role individual differences such as …
