Beyond Honor: Historicizing Sexual Coercion In Late Colonial Lima, 1750-1821, Morgan C. Gray
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sexual assault and sexual coercion are intensely emotional crimes that have been the focus of many recent public discussions around the world, including protests and reforms in Latin America. As such, the history of these crimes in countries like Peru provides vital context for reformers and scholars alike. This research aims to incorporate women’s emotional experiences of sexual coercion into the legal and cultural context of Peru’s capital city between 1750 and 1821, and thus to illustrate that social and political changes also affected individual women’s pursuit of justice. Using dozens of court cases from the ecclesiastical and royal secular …
El Ritmo Del Westside: Exploring The Musical Landscape Of San Antonio’S Historic Westside, Valeria Alderete
El Ritmo Del Westside: Exploring The Musical Landscape Of San Antonio’S Historic Westside, Valeria Alderete
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The westside of San Antonio, Texas fostered a uniquely diverse musical landscape throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, demonstrating the results of cross-cultural exchanges reflected in music. From Conjunto and Ranchera music, to R&B and Jazz, a wide range of music genres was celebrated in the historic westside, eventually shaping the birth of the area’s own Westside Sound, which remains a staple in many Chicano communities to date. Despite the cultural significance and rich history, the historic westside’s musical past remains widely unknown, often overshadowed by research and documentation surrounding the area’s violent history with gang networks and crime.

The Hidden Power Of Images: An Allegory Of Chaos And Performance In The Digital Age, Livia Xandersmith
The Hidden Power Of Images: An Allegory Of Chaos And Performance In The Digital Age, Livia Xandersmith
MFA in Visual Art
Within this text, I explore the hidden power of images in American visual culture through painting-based installations. I investigate images of the past and present juxtaposed in a surrealist landscape. Through the use of images in the news, entertainment, advertising, and images within the home, I depict how the problems of the past bleed into our perceptions of the present. I find that this cycle of problem inheritance connects us as humans regardless of time, generation, and place. In my work, I explore the complexity of image culture and its shifting presence within the digital age. Using surrealist collage, I …

Mass Incarceration, Covid-19, And Race As Exposure To Early Death, Traci Schlesinger Ph.D.
Mass Incarceration, Covid-19, And Race As Exposure To Early Death, Traci Schlesinger Ph.D.
Vincentian Heritage Journal
A majority of the largest, single-site outbreaks of COVID-19 infections in the United States have been in prisons and jails since the beginning of the pandemic. These outbreaks threaten the lives and well-being of incarcerated people, correctional staff, and people who live in the communities to which incarcerated people return. This study employs both linear and logistic multivariate regression models to examine data from the UCLA’s COVID Prison Data Project, IPUMS CPS, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Prison Policy Initiative to better understand the facility, county, and state-level predictors of COVID-19 infections and deaths in correctional facilities. …

Life Stories Of Older Chinese Immigrant Women In The U.S., Lijun Li
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study is an effort to turn to older Chinese immigrant women aged 60 and above, one of the most marginalized groups in American society, to recognize their humanity and rediscover the unseen and unheard. It asks what we can learn from their life stories, particularly from the ways in which each experience(d) being a woman in different societal systems. Using in-depth life story interviews supplemented with secondary sources of information, this study crafts four women’s stories that are first read and interpreted individually to capture the whole person in context, and then are looked at thematically. Nine themes are …
The Pardon Paradigm: The Presidential Pardons Of Donald J. Trump, Hlynur Saemundsson
The Pardon Paradigm: The Presidential Pardons Of Donald J. Trump, Hlynur Saemundsson
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The presidential pardon power is an oft-overlooked political institution that seems to be perceived as being innocuous and irrelevant to larger political concerns. This research examines the pardons issued by President Donald J. Trump in an effort to evaluate whether they align with constitutional expectations regarding the use of this unrestricted presidential power. Dr. Jeffrey Crouch, a leading scholar on the subject, has demonstrated that the pardon power was intended to be used as a disinterested act of grace or an act in the public interest. A close survey of President Trump’s use of this power shows that many of …
