St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report, Vol. 24, No. 4, King Banaian, Mana Komai
St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report
We predict the St. Cloud metro area will be in recession within the next 4 to 6 months, based on results of the St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Survey as well as data on professional employment and the stock prices of area publicly-traded corporations. The St. Cloud Index of Leading Economic Indicators fell 5% in the latest quarter and 9.8% in the last year. Employment growth in the region has slowed dramatically during the fall, lagging gains elsewhere in Minnesota. Survey results showed lower expectations of area business leaders for their own business activity and difficulty finding qualified workers.

Waiting for the Crash

Abstract
America’s housing market is in disarray. Housing prices have been skyrocketing to levels that are unaffordable for many young people. This has led to a generation of renters who are unable to purchase their own homes, even as they see their parents and older generations benefiting from the high prices.
One factor contributing to the high prices is the low supply of available homes on the market. This is due in part to a lack of new construction, as well as a trend of older homeowners staying in their homes longer rather …
Conscious Capitalism: An Emerging Economic Philosophy For Higher Purpose In Business, Molly Wickam
Conscious Capitalism: An Emerging Economic Philosophy For Higher Purpose In Business, Molly Wickam
Graduate School Faculty Publications
An enhanced economic philosophy, conscious capitalism, is ascending in the United States and gaining traction in helping corporations redefine their approach to business. This article analyzes and evaluates conscious capitalism, integrates it with biblical economics and the social justice faith tradition, and explores its relationship to business education. Business education researchers have the opportunity to integrate conscious capitalism ideas into business curriculum to give students ideas that broaden their understanding of an enhanced model of capitalism and the ways capitalism can do good. Additionally, there is opportunity for Christian business professors to integrate the social justice themes of mishpat, hesed …
Arkansas Soybean Research Studies 2021, Jeremy Ross
Arkansas Soybean Research Studies 2021, Jeremy Ross
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Arkansas is the leading soybean-producing state in the mid-southern United States. Arkansas ranked 11th in soybean production in 2021 compared to the other soybean-producing states in the U.S. The state represented 3.49% of the total U.S. soybean production and 3.49% of the total acres planted in soybean in 2021. The 2021 state soybean average yield was 52.0 bushels per acre, setting a new state record and surpassing the previous yield record of 51.5 bushels per acre set in 2020. The top five soybean-producing counties in 2021 were Mississippi, Phillips, Crittenden, Poinsett, and Arkansas (Table 1). These five counties accounted for …

Mining Competitively-Priced Bundle Configurations, Ezekiel Ong Young, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We examine the bundle configuration problem in the presence of competition. Given a competitor's bundle configuration and pricing, we determine what to bundle together, and at what prices, to maximize the target firm's revenue. We highlight the difficulty in pricing bundles and propose a scalable alternative and an efficient search heuristic to refine the approximate prices. Furthermore, we extend the heuristics proposed by previous work to accommodate the presence of a competitor. We analyze the effectiveness of our proposed models through experimentation on real-life ratings-based preference data.

Hospitality Sector Revenues And Employment In The Eagle Ford Shale, 2010-2019, Javier Oyakawa
Hospitality Sector Revenues And Employment In The Eagle Ford Shale, 2010-2019, Javier Oyakawa
Journal of Hospitality Financial Management
By taking advantage of proprietary data from input- output tables’ time series and by using econometric methods, this study estimated job and output multipliers affecting the hospitality sector in Eagle Ford Shale (EFS) between 2010 and 2019. In 2019, in the EFS area, the hospitality sector, including the hotel and food subsectors, received 32.5% of its increased revenues from oil and gas activities when comparing the years 2019 and 2010. For each new job in the energy industry, the hospitality sector received between $10,185 and $12,744. In the same year, hotel subsector revenues due to oil and gas activities explained …

Prolegomena To A Buddhist(Ic) Critique Of Capitalism, James Mark Shields
Faculty Contributions to Books
Not even three decades removed from Francis Fukuyama’s post-Cold War proclamation of the “End of History,” the Western world is now undergoing a crisis of conscience – at the very least – with respect to both capitalism as an economic system and neoliberalism as its less-recognized but ever-present ideological foundation. The financial crisis of 2008, the subsequent Great Recession, the Occupy movement(s) of 2011, the 2016 challenge of self-styled Democratic Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination, and growing anxiety about the fate of the planet, particularly among the young, have opened up new avenues of critique, and brought …
Why Post- Leaving Certificate Students In Ireland From Disadvantaged Backgrounds Are Less Likely To Proceed To Third-Level Education, Edward Hayes
Theses
Educational disadvantage continues to be a cause for concern, and addressing it remains at the forefront of education policy in Ireland (Houses of Oireachtas, 2019; Weir et al., 2017). This research extended across the academic years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 and during the period of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which imposed public health measures, and enforced an emergency online digital learning environment. A socio-economic profile of Ireland’s student body registered an attainment gap between rich and poor, finding that young people from backgrounds of disadvantage continue to be underrepresented at third-level when compared to their middle-class counterparts (HEA, 2020). The primary …

Northwest Arkansas State Of The Region 2022, Mervin Jebaraj
State of the Northwest Arkansas Region Report
The State of the Northwest Arkansas Region Report is an annual publication, commissioned by the Northwest Arkansas Council, that serves as a tool for evaluating economic performance. In July 2018, the Northwest Arkansas Council created a new blueprint for development in which Northwest Arkansas is benchmarked with other contemporary, high-performing regions, namely Austin, Des Moines, Madison, Durham-Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Provo-Orem.
The 2022 report compares Northwest Arkansas with these geographies in gross domestic product, employment, unemployment, establishment growth, median household income, average annual wages, poverty, educational attainment, research and development, homeownership costs, commuting time, and average domestic airfares. The following …

Thatcherism's Triumph: How Margaret Thatcher’S Neoliberal Policies Brought Prosperity To Britain, Carl J. Demarco Jr.
Student Publications
By 1979, the British economy was in complete and utter disarray. Inflation was at record highs along with unemployment. The post-world war consensus was built off the idea of embedded liberalism, which stressed that the government must play a large and active role in regulating the markets and that it was in the government's interest to keep unemployment at its natural low. Similar to the United States, since the Great Depression the welfare state in Great Britain had been expanding. The post-war consensus proclaimed and exhausted the economic theories of John Maynard Keynes who believed in embedded liberalism and the …
A Relationship Of Pivots: Philippine-Us Cooperation In A Changing World, Adam W. Greco
A Relationship Of Pivots: Philippine-Us Cooperation In A Changing World, Adam W. Greco
Journal of Strategic Security
As one of the few nations in the world (and the only one in the vicinity of China) to be a former colony of the United States, the Philippines is in a unique position on the world stage. This article delineates the history of the complex relationship between the Philippines and the United States since the Spanish-American war while placing an emphasis on modern relations. Since its independence to the end of the Cold War, the Philippines was unequivocally an ally to the United States, though this did not stop tensions from mounting. As China's contemporary foreign policy fosters further …

Perennial Warm-Season Grass Forages Impact On Cow-Calf Profitability In The Fescue Belt, Kyle A. Brazil, Patrick D. Keyser, Andrew P. Griffith, Christopher N. Boyer, J. Travis Mulliniks
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Incorporating a perennial warm- season grass (WSG) into tall fescue (Lolium arundina-ceum [Schreb.] Darbysh.) forage systems in the fescue belt can help avoid the effects of fescue toxicosis on beef cattle (Bos taurus) reproduction and animal performance and provide forage during summer when fescue production is low. However, little information is available on the economics of incorporating WSG into fescue-based forage systems. We developed a simulation model to compare profitability of three forage systems—100% tall fescue, 70% tall fescue/30% bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon), and 70% tall fescue/ 30% switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)—while also comparing spring- …

Inflation, Market Failures, And Algorithms, Rory Van Loo

Inflation is a problem of tremendous scale. But inflation itself is unlikely to cause the greatest economic harm during inflationary periods. Instead, a more likely source of devastation will be policymakers’ response to inflation. Their main anti-inflation tools, most notably increasing interest rates, increase unemployment and the risk of recessions. This Article argues that there is a better approach. Rather than defaulting to interest rate hikes that harm markets, policy makers should prioritize laws that lower prices while improving markets. For decades, businesses have raised prices by manipulating consumers, exercising monopoly power, and lobbying for laws that block competition. Automated …

In 2018, the United States generated over 35. 7 million tons of plastic waste, with only 8.4% being recycled and the other 91.6% incinerated or disposed of in a landfill. The continued growth of the polymer market has raised concerns over the end of life of plastics. Currently, the waste management system is faced with issues of inefficient sorting methods and low-efficiency recycling methods when it comes to plastics recycling. Mechanical recycling is the commonest recycling method but presents a lower-valued recycled material due to the material incompatibilities introduced via the inefficient sorting methods. Chemical recycling offers a promising alternative …

Historical Political Economy: What Is It?, Jeffrey Jenkins, Jared Rubin
Historical Political Economy: What Is It?, Jeffrey Jenkins, Jared Rubin
ESI Working Papers
In this chapter, we define what historical political economy (HPE) is and is not, classify the major themes in the literature, assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of the literature, and point to future directions. We view HPE as social scientific inquiry which highlights political causes or consequences of historical issues. HPE is different from conventional political economy in the emphasis placed on historical processes and context. While we view HPE in the most inclusive manner reasonable, we define it to exclude works that are either solely of contemporary importance or use historical data without any historical context (e.g., long-run …
New Historians And The American Revolution: Are Their Interpretations Really That New?, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
New Historians And The American Revolution: Are Their Interpretations Really That New?, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
A new wave of progressive historians have not only challenged older accounts of the American Revolution but portrayed their interpretations as overturning an overwhelmingly dominant mainstream consensus or as revealing ignored but essential aspects of the revolution. These historians sometimes associate their own work with the New York Times’ controversial 1619 Project. In this article, I examine the writings of two such historians: William Hogeland and Woody Holton. In contrast to their popular articles, their purely scholarly works do not in fact support the sweeping factual claims of the 1619 Project. While both these historians have their own unique perspective, …

The Missing U.S. Vat: Economic Inequality, American Fiscal Exceptionalism, And The Historical U.S. Resistance To National Consumption Taxes, Ajay K. Mehrotra
Northwestern University Law Review
Since the 1970s, economic inequality has soared dramatically across the globe and particularly in the United States. In that time, one of the obstacles of using fiscal policy to address inequality has been the growing myth of the “overtaxed American”—the misguided notion that U.S. taxpayers pay more in taxes than residents of other advanced, industrialized countries. This myth has persisted, in part, because of the peculiar and distinctive nature of the fractured American fiscal and social welfare state. Even a cursory review of comparative tax data shows that the United States, by most measures, is a low-tax country compared to …
Government Regulation Effect On The Volatility Of Top Trading Cryptocurrencies, Jodie R. Albert
Government Regulation Effect On The Volatility Of Top Trading Cryptocurrencies, Jodie R. Albert

I study whether news and the sentiment of the news regarding cryptocurrency regulation affects the volatility of Bitcoin, Binance, and Ethereum, measured as the standard deviation of the 1st difference of the log of the price with a right sided overlapping window of 7 days. I utilise a modified dynamic causal model with Newey-West heteroskedastic autocorrelation standard errors to estimate both the impact and cumulative effects that regulation news has on the three cryptocurrencies included in the study. My results show the volatility of all three cryptocurrencies react most strongly to negative regulatory news, with Binance being affected the most …

Coverage Impacts Of Work Requirements From The Arkansas Medicaid Program, Brett D. Huettner
Coverage Impacts Of Work Requirements From The Arkansas Medicaid Program, Brett D. Huettner
ETD Archive
I examine changes in Medicaid coverage and insurance status surrounding a work requirement policy implemented within the Arkansas Medicaid demonstration waiver. The policy applied to able-bodied, childless adults, aged 30 to 49, not enrolled as students, and was effective from 2018 to 2019. Eligibility was conditional on policy compliance. Taking a sample from the IPUMS American Community Survey database, I use triple-differences modeling to compare Arkansans subject to the policy with unaffected Arkansans and individuals from a set of control states. I find that the policy pilot group in Arkansas was less likely to be insured or have Medicaid coverage …
Medicaid Expansion: Changes In Individual Health Outcomes, Julie Norman
Medicaid Expansion: Changes In Individual Health Outcomes, Julie Norman
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The Affordable Care Act is one of the biggest changes in the American healthcare system in the 21st century. One element of the ACA is medicaid expansion, which opened up federal funding for states to cover any individual earning below 138% of the federal poverty line. 21 states expanded medicaid in 2014 while 12 haven’t expanded. This paper utilizes the disparity for a natural experiment to determine the efficacy of the program. Outcome variables of interest include measurements of individual health, health access and utilization, and premature death rates. The results indicate positive, but small improvements due to the policy, …
Three Essays On Consumption Smoothing, Logan James Miller
Three Essays On Consumption Smoothing, Logan James Miller
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Macroeconomic theory has established that consumption smoothing leads to higher standards of living. A stable consumption path can lead to more stability and less uncertainty between periods of high and low income. However, there is a wide body of literature that shows people do not consistently smooth their consumption when exposed to adverse income shocks. This dissertation uses experimental and empirical methods to better understand the obstacles people face when trying to smooth their consumption over time. It looks to understand the differences in pairs and individuals’ ability to smooth consumption. It also explores how the household’s level of income …

To encourage health insurance uptake, marketers and policymakers have focused on consumers’ economic self-interest, attempting to show that insurance is a good deal or to sweeten the deal, with subsidies or penalties. Still, some consumers see insurance as a bad deal, either because they rationally exploit private risk information (“adverse selection”), or irrationally misperceive the value due to cognitive biases (e.g., optimism). As a result, about 30 million Americans remain uninsured, including many who could afford it.
At the same time, polling suggests that Americans view health insurance through a moral lens, seeking to protect those with pre-existing conditions especially. …
Optimal Stocker Production Strategies For Spring And Fall Calving Cow Herds, Cora Beth Key
Optimal Stocker Production Strategies For Spring And Fall Calving Cow Herds, Cora Beth Key
Masters Theses
This thesis consists of two chapters discussing the economics of raising stocker beef cattle in the southeast United States. The objective of the first chapter is to estimate supplemental feed cost for spring-calving cows, spring-born stockers, cows calving in the fall, and fall-born stockers, while considering the seasonality of forage production and nutritional needs. The chapter explores ways producers can lower their feed costs and demonstrates the importance of managing hay expenses for cattle producers to control cost. The objective of chapter two is to determine the profit-maximizing stocker period in an integrated cow-calf and stocker operation with both fall- …
