Short Term Medical Mission Antibiotic Protocol, Greg Jennings Dec 2021

Short Term Medical Mission Antibiotic Protocol, Greg Jennings

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background/Introduction: Short term medical mission trips are growing in popularity and with this growth the level of care provided must remain evidenced based. Mission groups traveling to developing countries consist primarily of volunteers. And while many of those serving on mission trips are medically trained, some have minimal healthcare knowledge. Pharmacists are not always available to dispense medications on mission trips and therefore it is common for registered nurses in the pharmacy to dispense the medications prescribed by the providers. Because the medications available on mission trips are limited, often times substitutions must be made, especially when it comes …

The Impact Of The United States Army Nurses Corps On The United States Army Fatality Rate In The Mediterranean And European Theater Of Operations During World War Ii, Joshua Benjamin Groomes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

World War II was the most devastating war in human history in terms of loss of life. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, plunged the United States into war. Less than seven thousand military nurses were on active duty at the time of the attack. By the end of the war, there were over fifty-thousand active-duty nurses. The army nurses performed under fire in field and evacuation hospitals, on hospital trains and ships, and as flight nurses on medical evacuation transport aircraft. The skill and dedication of the Army Nurses Corps insured a 95% survival rate …

Cost-Effectiveness Of Paediatric Surgery: An Economic Evaluation Of World Paediatric Project Surgical Interventions In St. Vincent And The Grenadines (2002–2019), Carrie B. Dolan, Samuel A. Agyemang, Brian Clare, Charles Coleman, Et Al. Dec 2021

Arts & Sciences Articles

Objectives

The purpose of this study is to examine the cost-effectiveness of six types of surgical interventions as part of a sustained paediatric surgical programme in St.Vincent and the Grenadines from 2002 to 2019.

Design

In this economic model, six paediatric surgical interventions (ophthalmic, orthopaedic, plastic, general, urology, neurosurgery) were compared with no surgery in a deterministic cost-effectiveness model. We assessed health benefits as averted disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Costs were included from the programme perspective and measured using standard micro-costing methods. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated for each type of surgical intervention. Interventions with ICERs of <50% of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita were considered cost-effective. Costs are reported in 2019 US$. Univariate sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the effect of uncertainty.

Results

The average …

Endovascular Treatment Of Acquired Atheromatous Postsubclavian Aortic Coarctation, Bhushan S Sonawane, Sreeja Pavithran, Kothandam Sivakumar Nov 2021

Endovascular Treatment Of Acquired Atheromatous Postsubclavian Aortic Coarctation, Bhushan S Sonawane, Sreeja Pavithran, Kothandam Sivakumar

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Coral reef aorta is a rare calcifying obstructive disease that involves the thoracoabdominal aorta. Similar presentations in the postsubclavian aorta may result in acquired atheromatous aortic coarctation leading to systemic hypertension and heart failure. The associated calcification makes surgical anatomic or extraanatomic bypass and thromboendarterectomy challenging. Extensive circumferential calcification often precludes endovascular intervention. We present the case of a 25-year-old man with an acquired atheromatous coarctation of the postsubclavian aorta who underwent successful endovascular treatment with use of a balloon-expandable covered stent.

Bassini Inguinal Hernia Repair: Obsolete Or Still A Viable Surgical Option? A Single Center Cohort Study, Wayne Tse, William Johns, James Maher, Jeannie Rivers, Thomas Miller

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Background: Most inguinal hernias are presently repaired using some type of mesh technique. This mesh can be placed through an inguinal incision or positioned through a laparoscopic approach. Either way, results have been impressive including a low recurrence rate, minimal pain and a rapid return to work and normal activity compared to tissue based approaches. Notwithstanding these results, there is still a subset of patients who, for various reasons, are strongly opposed to having a mesh repair. This study summarizes our 13 year experience with such patients and why the Bassini hernia repair is a viable surgical option in these …

Great (Soft) Power Competition: Us And Chinese Efforts In Global Health Engagement, Michael W. Wissemann Aug 2021

Great (Soft) Power Competition: Us And Chinese Efforts In Global Health Engagement, Michael W. Wissemann

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Global health engagement, an underutilized strategy rooted in the strengths of soft power persuasion, can lead to more military-to-military cooperation training, help establish relationships that can be relied on when crises develop, stabilize fragile states, and deny violent extremist organizations space for recruiting and operations. Examining Chinese efforts worldwide to curry favor and influence and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this article shows health as a medium is a very compelling and advantageous whole-of-government approach to national security policy concerns.

The Evaluation Of Medical Student International Mission Trips: A Rapid Review, Andrew Kamel Jun 2021

The Evaluation Of Medical Student International Mission Trips: A Rapid Review, Andrew Kamel

Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations

Previous reviews of the literature on medical mission trips have noted that there is a dearth of rigorous data collection and evaluation of the efficacy of medical missions to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Medical students are increasingly participating in these trips as global health curriculums become more popular and prevalent, and the literature about these international experiences has not been well-described. This rapid review aims to characterize the evaluation of medical mission trips for medical students to LMICs. This article is a rapid review of the literature using PRIMSA guidelines to search PubMed for studies about the evaluation of …

Books and Book Chapters

No longer confined to China’s land territory or its near abroad, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is conducting increasingly complex operations farther and farther from China’s continental borders. Within Asia, the PLA now regularly operates into the far reaches of the South China Sea and deep into the Western Pacific, enforcing China’s territorial claims and preparing to counter U.S. intervention in a regional conflict. Beyond Asia, the PLA is present on the ground, at sea, or in military exercises with foreign partners across the Indian Ocean and into the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Foreign militaries now regularly encounter the …

The Development Of Cultural Competence Through Educational Experiences Abroad, Justyna Jablonska May 2021

The Development Of Cultural Competence Through Educational Experiences Abroad, Justyna Jablonska

Academic Festival

Educational experiences abroad, such as through a college or university, have an advantage–the development of cultural competence. The experiential knowledge a person can gain, as a result of such a trip, can potentially impact their own cultural understanding and behavior. Cultural competence not only embodies gaining the knowledge of cultures and differences, but developing positive attitudes towards different cultural practices and worldviews, how to go about them, as well as being aware of and challenging one’s own stance. A simpler explanation of cultural competence can be presented as the ability, but more importantly the commitment, to understand, communicate with and …

The Impact Of Short-Term Mission Trips On Religiosity And Motivations For Helping In College Students, Patricia Minerva Cepeda-Russell May 2021

The Impact Of Short-Term Mission Trips On Religiosity And Motivations For Helping In College Students, Patricia Minerva Cepeda-Russell

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There is an abundant amount of research on the negative aspects of short-term mission trips; however, there is a lack of literature that reflects the religiosity of college students and studies using religious assessments for the specific age range of 18-25. The current research intends to answer the following three questions: Does going on short-term mission trips make a difference in religiosity in the lives of college students who participate? What is the mean difference in religiosity practices between college students that participated in short-term mission trips compared to those that did not? What are the motivating factors that lead …
