Effects Of Anharmonicity In A Dual-Sagnac Interferometer, Stephen Thomas Dec 2021

Effects Of Anharmonicity In A Dual-Sagnac Interferometer, Stephen Thomas

Honors College Theses

A recent experiment implemented a dual Sagnac atom interferometer (AI) for rotation sensing using a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a TOP-trap potential. The BEC is split twice by laser light to create two pairs of counter-orbiting clouds in a lowest-order harmonic potential with each pair acting as a separate Sagnac interferometer. After one orbit the two overlapping cloud pairs are split again and the interference patterns are inferred from the population of atoms in the zero-momentum state. We have simulated the impact of the presence of anharmonic terms in the potential on the performance of the AI as measured …

Amplifying The "A" In Steam Education, Grace Floerke Dec 2021

Amplifying The "A" In Steam Education, Grace Floerke

Honors College Theses

This paper discusses the importance of teachers implementing STEAM education in the classroom. Previously, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (abbreviated as STEM) education was used as a tool to prepare students to excel in career fields that are projected to grow in the near future. However, recently the acronym was changed to STEAM to add “the arts” to the original acronym. It is imperative that the arts are seen as an equal to STEM, as they can complement and enhance the goals STEM is trying to reach. Since not all students possess the same interest, ways of learning, or abilities, …

Murder She Sang: How Contemporary Country Murder Ballads Alleviate Blame, Alyssa Hubbard Dec 2021

Murder She Sang: How Contemporary Country Murder Ballads Alleviate Blame, Alyssa Hubbard

Honors College Theses

Murder ballads, or narrative songs centered on a murder and/or its aftermath, were historically used as a tool to emphasize a criminal’s guilt, cruelty, and inhumanity. Ballads centered on women in particular underlined the idea that women are naturally inclined to sin and easily corrupted, and because they were often written by men in an imitation of the woman’s voice, any regret or repentance within them is falsified or exaggerated, intended to warn other women away from committing similar transgressions.

In contrast, contemporary murder ballads, such as those sung by country music artists like Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and The …

Deepfakes Generated By Generative Adversarial Networks, Olympia A. Paul Nov 2021

Deepfakes Generated By Generative Adversarial Networks, Olympia A. Paul

Honors College Theses

Deep learning is a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that mimics the workings of the human brain in processing data such as speech recognition, visual object recognition, object detection, language translation, and making decisions. A Generative adversarial network (GAN) is a special type of deep learning, designed by Goodfellow et al. (2014), which is what we call convolution neural networks (CNN). How a GAN works is that when given a training set, they can generate new data with the same information as the training set, and this is often what we refer to as deep fakes. CNN takes an input …

Nurturing Democracy? Mediating Between Women Chief Executives And Voter Turnout, Gabrielle A. Peterson Nov 2021

Nurturing Democracy? Mediating Between Women Chief Executives And Voter Turnout, Gabrielle A. Peterson

Honors College Theses

Does the presence of female candidates in executive elections increase voter turnout for that election? Does the presence of female chief executives in states increase voter turnout following their tenure? While there is little research surrounding female chief executives and candidates, past research on women in parliament has shown that the increased prevalence of female legislators increases voter turnout rates due to role modeling and socialization. Overall, a more diverse government will feel more democratic and thus more welcoming of participation by both men and women. I theorize that this phenomenon remains true with both female candidates in executive elections …

Development Of Gluten-Free Sugar Cookies Using Kudzu Starch As A Partial Fat Replacement Ingredient, Saabirah Carr

Honors College Theses

The prevalence of kudzu has risen in the United States since its introduction in 1876. Though its invasiveness may play a negative role in our ecosystems, its roots have been used nutritionally in China for over 2,000 years because of their high starch content. In the United States, the use of kudzu starch as food products is limited. This study compared the moisture content and spread of reduced-fat gluten-free cookies prepared with kudzu starch-thickened aqueous mixture to similar gluten-free cookies prepared with rice flour and gluten-containing all-purpose wheat flour sugar cookies with kudzu starch, to gluten-containing sugar cookies (control). Moisture …

Investigations Of The Negative Temperature Coefficient Region Of Sustainable Aviation Fuels For Mitigation Of Global Warming, Richard C. Smith Iii

Honors College Theses

An investigation was led to determine the correlations between the durations of Ignition Delay (ID), Combustion Delay (CD), Derived Cetane Number (DCN), Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC), Low-Temperature Heat Release (LTHR) regions, ringing intensity, and precent mass burn, and the effect of blending the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthetic aerospace fuel (SAF), iso-paraffinic kerosene (IPK), with petroleum derived Jet-A aerospace fuel on these regions. Neat blends of Jet-A and IPK and three by mass blends of the fuels will be researched. These blends include mass percentages of 75%Jet-A and 25%IPK (75Jet-A25IPK), 50%Jet-A 50%IPK (50Jet-A50IPK), and 25%Jet-A 75%IPK (25Jet-A75IPK). The study will utilize a …
