Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The United States Army began standing up Security Force Assistance Brigades (SFAB) in February 2018. The Brigade Medical Team (BMT) is an 11-person, interdisciplinary Army National Guard team. National Guard Soldiers only have one weekend per month and two weeks of annual training per year to develop/maintain cultural competence. The researcher investigated the efficacy of the Cross-Cultural Competence Trainer (3CT) V2 course to develop and maintain cultural competency in BMT personnel. Pre-test results were obtained from three military medical personnel and a post-test immediately after the course. Participants completed a longitudinal test 28-31 days after the post-test. There was a …

Bringing Batavia Armory Building Back To Life – Community Center Adaptive Reuse Design, Jiangcheng Li Dec 2020

Bringing Batavia Armory Building Back To Life – Community Center Adaptive Reuse Design, Jiangcheng Li

Theses

Built in 1963 and situated on a 4.6-acre lot in the City of Batavia, the Batavia Armory once housed tank battalions A and B of the Genesee National Guard, but has now remained vacant for decades. Instead of demolishing the armory buildings, providing them with a new role could alleviate the environmental impact, reduce construction time, and lower the cost of investment. At the same time, new features could be brought into the existing building from aesthetic and functional perspectives, and be beneficial to the community. Currently, we are facing the COVID-19 pandemic, and the virus impacts our lives and …

Methods For Estimating Economic Benefits Of Surgical Interventions In Low Income And Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review, Amy Hilla, Victoria Reese, Justice Nonvignon, Carrie B. Dolan

Arts & Sciences Articles

Objectives: Studies indicate that many types of surgical care are cost-effective compared with other health interventions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, global health investments to support these interventions remain limited. This study undertakes a scoping review of research on the economic impact of surgical interventions in LMICs to determine the methodologies used in measuring economic benefits.

Design: The Arksey and O’Malley methodological framework for scoping reviews and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalyses Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist were used to review the data systematically. Online databases were used to identify papers published between 2005 …

Academic Emergency Physicians (EPs) face additional unique challenges in optimizing wellness compared to community EPs.

Objective

Our objective was to explore specific individual and systems challenges that academic EPs encounter that affect their wellbeing and professional fulfillment in emergency medicine (EM).

Methods

An expert group of academic EPs convened in 2019 at the annual meeting of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine to investigate the overall causes of burnout in healthcare providers, the effects of burnout on the healthcare system, specific causes of burnout in EM, and the distinct challenges facing academic emergency physicians.

Accepted In Bella Bella: A Historical Exemplar Of A Missionary Nursing Education, In British Columbia From 1921-1925, Sarah C. Cook, Sonya Grypma

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

This study explores the largely-unknown history of missionary nursing on British Columbia’s Northwest Coast between 1901 and 1925, built around the experience of nurse Doris Nichols. From 1903 until 1935 in the Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) village of Wáglísla (Bella Bella) there existed a small but persistent school of nursing within a Methodist mission hospital. The hospital was built with the intention to bring spiritual and physical healing to local Indigenous people, however the medical missionaries served all in need along the central coast, and the nursing school sustained this mission. Nichols arrived at Bella Bella in 1921, where she began her …

So Others May Live: The Price Of Healthcare In Combat, Robert Del Toro

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

“Medics carried more responsibilities than dry feet, salt tablets, syphilis, and puncture wounds,” U.S. Army Medic Ben Sherman stated after reflecting on his tour in Vietnam. On the battlefields of North Africa, Italy, France, and Vietnam, the medics of the U.S. Army Medical Department faced the difficult duty of preserving life while death surrounded them. Their patients were not strangers but, men they had grown close to, they were comrades and family. Analyzing the memoirs and letters of forward medical personnel from the Second World War and the Vietnam War, this thesis analyzes how a medic’s care went beyond the …

The Effects Of Nursing School Peer Tutoring On Tutors, Yelyzaveta Soboleva

Undergraduate Honors Theses

An integrative review was used to examine the effects of being a tutor versus not being a tutor. The matrix method was used to guide the research process, to identify articles that met the inclusion criteria, and to reduce data into common topics of peer tutoring. The results of the integrative review yielded 20 articles and suggested that students in the position to assist others are more confident in communicating in groups and have higher knowledge in the subject they help with than their fellow peers. The literature showed that students in the position to assist others have defined personal …

The Face Of Intervention: Military Humanitarianism During The 1965 Dominican Crisis, Wesley Hazzard May 2020

The Face Of Intervention: Military Humanitarianism During The 1965 Dominican Crisis, Wesley Hazzard

Dissertations

On April 28, 1965 the US military intervened in the Dominican Republic’s civil war. This dissertation argues that the military did not deploy to fight a war but to create a favorable environment for the establishment of a pro-US government. The US military relied on humanitarian aid through civic action programs and civil affairs operations to diminish the Dominican populations’ interest in leftist political organizations and platforms. The civil affairs and civic action programs served to both alleviate the hardships of the Dominican people, turn them away from leftist policies, and build support for a US friendly government. The US …
