An Understanding Of Prisons, Race, And Class In The United States, Seth Ketchum
An Understanding Of Prisons, Race, And Class In The United States, Seth Ketchum
Honors Projects
After a summer of protests sparked by police brutality, the United States remains divided on this most important issue. This paper will seek to contextualize this country’s situation to explain that these protests stem from a history of inequality, in order to argue against claims that the protests are unjustified. With a multidisciplinary approach, we can begin to observe just how unequal this country is and understand what drives so many people to protest during the middle of a global pandemic.

Swords, War, And Goldsmithing: Benvenuto Cellini And Masculinity In Sixteenth-Century Italy, Jessica Hogbin
Swords, War, And Goldsmithing: Benvenuto Cellini And Masculinity In Sixteenth-Century Italy, Jessica Hogbin
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
Born in 1500, Benvenuto Cellini was one of the world’s most renowned Renaissance artists. As a goldsmith and a sculptor, his works became well-known masterpieces. In his autobiography, The Life of Benvenuto the Son of Giovanni Cellini Written by Himself in Florence, Cellini detailed his experiences and actions as an artist, fighter, and man living in the sixteenth century. While Cellini states his purpose for writing the autobiography is to describe his achievements in art, there is a great deal of violence in The Life, much of which Benvenuto instigates. As shown by The Life, in 16th century Italy, aggression—if …

Instrumental Vs. Expressive: A Study Of Voter Behavior Models Through The Lens Of Identity In The 2016 Presidential Election, Kaitlyn Fales
Instrumental Vs. Expressive: A Study Of Voter Behavior Models Through The Lens Of Identity In The 2016 Presidential Election, Kaitlyn Fales
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
Studying voter behavior through the lens of identity is central to making sense of the 2016 presidential election. The traditional models for explaining voter behavior are rational choice and behavioralism. The former is grounded in instrumental partisanship and a voter’s issue positions, with the latter grounded in an expressive, psychological attachment to partisanship. More recent, social identity theory related models discuss voter behavior through group belonging and the partisan mega-identity (Mason 2018). My analysis used the ANES 2016 Time Series Study. To measure a voter’s issue positions, I created a new Identity Index alongside the expansion of an established Issue …
Finding A Place For World War I In American History: 1914-2018, Jennifer D. Keene
Finding A Place For World War I In American History: 1914-2018, Jennifer D. Keene
History Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"World War I has occupied an uneasy place in the American public and political consciousness.1 In the 1920s and 1930s, controversies over the war permeated the nation’s cultural and political life, influencing memorial culture and governmental policy. Interest in the war, however, waned considerably after World War II, a much larger and longer war for the United States. Despite a plethora of scholarly works examining nearly every aspect of the war, interest in the war remains limited even among academic historians. In many respects, World War I became the “forgotten war” because Americans never developed a unifying collective memory about …
Towards Consortship: Performing Ritual, Intercession, And Networking In Tudor And Early Stuart England, Courtney Herber
Towards Consortship: Performing Ritual, Intercession, And Networking In Tudor And Early Stuart England, Courtney Herber
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Historically, the study of consorts has largely focused on how women performed the role – generally analyzing how a particular queen acted as a royal wife, mother, and manager of her household. While this makes sense as most of the consorts in English history were women, this is not the whole picture of the varied political roles of a consort. Looking at all of the foreign-born consorts in the Tudor and early Stuart years, one can clearly see that while the duties of a wife were important for the majority of individuals who took on the mantle of consort, that …
The Distinctive Questions Of Catholics In History, Amelia J. Uelmen
The Distinctive Questions Of Catholics In History, Amelia J. Uelmen
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
Let me start by saying how much I enjoyed working through the manuscript that Professors Breen and Strang shared with us, and how much I look forward to the development of this project on the history of Catholic legal education. My comments focus on the architecture of Chapter Three and the conceptual driver for Chapter Five. The frame for my suggestions is the challenge that emerges clearly in the 1960s when, as James Burtchaell noted, students were “drop[ping] their faith like baby teeth.” As Professors Breen and Strang summarize: “University administrators were well aware that even Catholic students were …
The History, Evolution, And Trends Of Academic Dishonesty: A Literature Review, Amy Zachek
The History, Evolution, And Trends Of Academic Dishonesty: A Literature Review, Amy Zachek
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
Academic dishonesty is a murky problem without a commonly agreed upon solution in American higher education. It has a long-standing history in higher education but a short history in academic literature, it has evolved rapidly and longitudinally (McCabe & Trevino, 1996), and it has several easily apparent trends and others that the majority of researchers are in disagreement about. While traversing this perilous landscape of dichotomies, this paper will examine connections and gaps in the literature, make suggestions and recommendations for future study based off of these results, and examine the implications that these recommendations could have on higher education …

Now I Know My “Acbs”: The Right To Literacy Following An Incremental Path, Gregory J. O'Neill
Now I Know My “Acbs”: The Right To Literacy Following An Incremental Path, Gregory J. O'Neill
University of Massachusetts Law Review
It is a tragic irony that a nation with enormous wealth will not provide the most basic of education rights to its citizens. Despite continual judicial and legislative measures to ensure access to education, or a facsimile thereof, no judicial or legislative body has taken the step to ensure that literacy is a fundamental right for the citizens of the United States. The issue has been, and continues to be, presented to both Congress and the courts. While Congress has passed legislation to some degree, both institutions have largely failed to ensure the population receives the fundamental right of literacy. …

Soaring With Eagles: The Life And Legacy Of Janina Lewandowska, The Only Female Pow Killed In The Katyń Forest Massacre, Joshua Chlebowski
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
In March of 1940, Joseph Stalin ordered the execution of approximately five thousand Polish prisoners of war, setting off a chain of events leading to the Katyń Massacre. Buried in seven mass graves, these soldiers’ bodies remained undisturbed until German forces unearthed them several years later. Even more shocking to the Polish nation than this discovery was the revelation that one of the victims was a female military officer: Second Lieutenant in the Polish Air Force, Janina Lewandowska. Indeed, the presence of her body was at the center of a fifty-year cover-up.
Exploring the life of Janina Lewandowska offers more …
The Legion Of The Archangel Michael: The Past And Present Appeal Of Decentralized Fascism, Andrew Bennet Gillen
The Legion Of The Archangel Michael: The Past And Present Appeal Of Decentralized Fascism, Andrew Bennet Gillen
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
The Legion of the Archangel Michael (LAM) was a notorious fascist group in Romania from the years 1927-1941. It was a highly religious fascist movement, led by Corneliu Codreanu, and attracted many young men to its banner in the middle of the 20th century. However, its appeal appears to not be limited to the past. In 2017, at the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, one of the lead organizers of the rally was seen wearing a shirt depicting Codreanu. In 2019, London’s Sanctuary Press published a new translation of Codreanu’s memoir, and in Romania, the Alliance for …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
In this article, the authors offer that the 2017 publication of Dr Sonya Grypma’s article entitled Historically informed nursing the untapped potential of nursing education was the catalyst for discussion of how historical content is addressed in nursing curricula and how it should be further enhanced. It offers perspectives on approaches used in undergraduate education to incorporate history in nursing curricula. Additionally, it suggests envisioning historically informed nursing through a relational lens. It will be of interest to readers as the area of pedagogy of historically informed nursing in the global environment of today is an urgent discussion in particular …
Not Your Average Rose: Cultural Inversion In Pizan’S 'City Of Ladies', Alex Donley
Not Your Average Rose: Cultural Inversion In Pizan’S 'City Of Ladies', Alex Donley
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
This research addresses Le Livre de la Cité des Dames—translated into English as The Book of the City of Ladies—as an outstanding work of proto-feminist literature from 1405. It is written by a woman, in defense of women. Christine de Pizan plays the central character in her own work, in which she combats misogyny with a revised account of history. She battles prevalent ideals of courtly love and gender inequality as things that are not merely repulsive or immoral, but wholly heretical. Rather than focusing on historical accuracy, de Pizan uses the literary power of her narrative to …

Co-Teaching Botany And History: An Interdisciplinary Model For A More Inclusive Curriculum, Frederica Bowcutt, Tamara Caulkins
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
This essay offers numerous ideas on how to integrate science and history into classroom pedagogy in a way that acknowledges the contributions of women and other groups underrepresented in science by highlighting the cultural and political contexts in which science developed rather than by adding token individuals to a history of science still largely defined by the achievements of a few great men. It details how students in a General Education class co-taught by a botanist and a historian of science at the Evergreen State College not only gained skills in field botany and vegetation analysis but also became more …
