More Than Just Video Games: Analyzing Japanese Game Design 1985 - 1995, Gerald Demattia
More Than Just Video Games: Analyzing Japanese Game Design 1985 - 1995, Gerald Demattia
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This thesis is an exploration of how the Japanese experience in the second half of the 20th century shaped video game design in Japan from 1985-1995 – particularly the formation of the Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) genre. To understand the connection between the Japanese experience and JRPGs, research for this thesis was conducted around specific game developers and their creations, namely: Yuji Horii and Dragon Quest; Shigesato Itoi and Mother 1 & 2; and Tajiri Satoshi and the Pokémon games. The crux of this paper centers on primary source interviews with developers where social commentary was cited …
Chinese Gardens: Solutions For Urban Nature Deficit, Zachary K. Warner
Chinese Gardens: Solutions For Urban Nature Deficit, Zachary K. Warner
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Research shows that time spent in nature is good for human health and well-being. However, as the world’s population becomes more concentrated in urban areas regular time in nature, especially extended time, is becoming more difficult to have. On the other hand, Chinese gardens can provide one solution to this problem because they have a unique way of providing a naturalistic space within a small area. Despite this fact, there aren’t many Chinese style gardens outside of China. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was to identify possible barriers to using Chinese garden design principles and construction techniques, then address …
Waiting Room, Adam Lefebvre
Waiting Room, Adam Lefebvre
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Waiting can be exasperating, but sometimes that helplessness, knowing there is nothing to do but wait, is a comfort.
I have come to understand the value of the handmade through using and living with thoughtfully crafted objects. I am attracted to goods made by people who give voice to their material. When this is done well, I slow down and pay more attention to the object and the task they are performing.
Attraction and distraction. What are the differences between objects meant to attract our attention and those meant to distract? I would much rather lead a life full …

Overcoming The Myth Of The Contemporary “Starving Artist”: An Exploration Into The Fusion And Viability Of A 21st-Century Career In Art And Design, Miranda M. Myles Jackson
Overcoming The Myth Of The Contemporary “Starving Artist”: An Exploration Into The Fusion And Viability Of A 21st-Century Career In Art And Design, Miranda M. Myles Jackson
Masters Theses
This research explores the myth of the “starving artist” surrounding the pursuit of a career in the arts. Artists are often dubbed as starving due to the pre-conceived notion that careers in art do not provide longevity or financial stability. Due to this stigma, budding creatives are often dissuaded at home, school, or both from pursuing a career doing what they love. Arts programs are often cut and or remain underfunded, mainly due to this biased perception. Research indicates that careers in the arts have expanded exponentially due to its merge with various fields. According to both the STEM vs. …
Preconstruction Plan For Stairs At West Cerro Vista Apartments, Kian D. Kemp
Preconstruction Plan For Stairs At West Cerro Vista Apartments, Kian D. Kemp
Construction Management
Students at California Polytechnic University have created an unsafe dirt trail down a hillside west of the Cerro Vista Apartment Complex on the university’s campus. This heavily traveled trail is a shortcut to an existing pedestrian pathway which connects Village Drive to Poly Canyon Village, as well as the R-3 and R-4 parking structures. The use of this trail raises alarm for potential safety concerns for students using it, especially during winter months when the hillside becomes very slippery. This paper outlines the design and preconstruction plan for the West Cerro Vista Stair Project, which proposes replacing the current trail …

Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will
Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will
Senior Honors Theses
Graphic designers have many choices when designing and communicating with words which can be seen throughout history. Hand lettering techniques have been used for centuries to record information. Then with the development of moveable type came the mass production of reading materials and the introduction of typefaces. Today, much written communication is viewed through a digitized typeface on a screen. However, there has recently been a noticeable increase in hand lettered type, one of these reasons being that hand lettered type can be easier for people to remember. This paper and the visual application of the research examines how hand …

Basic Characteristics Of Thermal Converters For Controlling Of Humidity Of Liquid Materials, N.I. Avezova, P.R. Ismatullaev, P.M. Matyakubova
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
In the article, the static characteristics of thermal converters of liquid materials are investigated for three possible operating modes: - at a constant heating power; - at constant temperature difference; - with discrete switching on and off of the heating element. It is shown: that a simpler and more reliable mode of operation: at a more linear static characteristic occurs at mode.It is shown that the reliability of thermal converters of moisture content in liquid materials in tracking gradual failures, taking into account destabilizing factors, when the error of the converters is not more than.

Mummy Cave; North Fork Shoshone River; Park County, Wyoming, Timothy Andrews
Conspectus Borealis
Mummy Cave represents the silence of the Sheepeater Shoshone. Little evidence of human occupation can survive this close to the river. The bank is low and rocky, with a thin deposit of alluvial soil, from the present shoreline to the angle of the ridge, where the ruddy breccia and tuff rise acutely, providing a rockface where the erosive action of the frigid mountain water could lap over eons at the igneous wall to form a shallow overhang. Camp placement in this proximity to a river was likely common, making use of a broad level riverbank to live close to water …

2 Degree Of Freedom Robotic Leg, Oded Tzori, Henry Terrell, Adan Martinez
Mechanical Engineering
Professor Xing, an assistant professor at Cal Poly, proposed the 2 DOF Robotic Leg project for this quarter’s senior project class. The project is to build a robotic leg attached at the hip to a stand, which will be used as a teaching tool and eventually help develop Cal Poly’s very own robotic quadruped. Since this project has multiple uses after its completion, there are multiple customers that it must perform well for: the Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department, the ME Lab instructors, and the students. The Scope of Work (Sections 2 & 3) is composed of 2 main …
Emergence And Compassion: A Reflection On Interpersonal Priorities Strategies Within Collaborative Settings, Chanel Beebe
Emergence And Compassion: A Reflection On Interpersonal Priorities Strategies Within Collaborative Settings, Chanel Beebe
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
The nature of work with and for humans and communities requires intentional relationship building that can be rife with complexities, foibles, discomfort, and learning. As scholars, researchers, practitioners, educators, and students, we carry a multitude of identities and dispositions that make collaborative work and change-making a messy and potentially emotional journey. Thus, many groups that find themselves on this journey often struggle to develop harmonious or impactful lasting relationships and often create toxic or harmful working environments for those who are the most marginalized or have the least power. The goal of this work is to provide a reflection on …

Almost Home Humane Society: From Creating A Marketing Tool To Adopting A Dog, Jan Alyssa Gayle Agaton
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
This article will consist of a reflection upon my community engagement experience with Almost Home Humane Society. For the Multimedia Writing course offered at Purdue, I chose to single-handedly take on a project in which I created a magazine to be individually mailed to past donors, serving as personalized appreciation for their help, as well as a request for future donations in an entertaining format. I personally pitched the idea to Almost Home Humane Society’s marketing manager, Justin Henry, and I worked alongside him to gather the information necessary to make the magazine successful and visually appealing to the target …
Gestation Time And Uterine Reaction Rate, Jonathan F. Henry
Gestation Time And Uterine Reaction Rate, Jonathan F. Henry
Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism
Chemical factors affecting the gestation interval are discussed. The human gestation time is also compared with that of representative mammals. It is shown to be anomalously long given the relatively small human birth weight. This anomaly is taken to be evidence of the unique design of the human being in God's image.

The Kidney: A Designed System For Plasma Homeostasis, Patricia L. Speck
The Kidney: A Designed System For Plasma Homeostasis, Patricia L. Speck
Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism
The kidney is an excellent biochemical model showing design in nature. Design implies a designer. The development of the kidney follows a very precise pattern and time schedule. The anatomy and physiology of the kidney and the entire urinary system are complex and precise. This is true when regarding the urinary system alone; and also, in studying its relationship to other systems. The urinary system is tied in with the circulatory and nervous systems In very unique fashion. Each part Is carefully integrated Into the whole system to form a homeostatic control network that operates efficiently in a large number …
A Compelling Creation: A Suggestion For A New Apologetic, Kurt P. Wise, Matthew S. Cooper
A Compelling Creation: A Suggestion For A New Apologetic, Kurt P. Wise, Matthew S. Cooper
Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism
From our experience with quantum mechanics, chaos theory, and the ingenuity of the carnal mind, we know that it is not possible, by logical argument alone -- either from first principles or from observations of the natural world -- to arrive at the conclusion that the God of the Bible created the world. Solely logical arguments lead a person at best to a conclusion of the mind -- not the heart. Our apologetic should involve compelling arguments which remind a person what they already know in their heart (Rom. 1 :20). A few compelling arguments from the creation are reviewed. …
The Current State Of Creation Astronomy, Danny R. Faulkner
The Current State Of Creation Astronomy, Danny R. Faulkner
Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism
The current state of creation astronomy is reviewed. Creationists have usually followed three basic approaches in the field of astronomy: 1) criticism of the big bang, 2) the argument of design, and 3) arguments for a recent creation. Many arguments that recent creationists use are found to be rather dated. Many of these arguments are still valid, but must be continually updated to reflect new ideas and discoveries in the field. A new argument for a recent lunar origin is presented. Suggestions for future research are made.

Complex Life Cycles In Heterophyid Trematodes: Structural And Developmental Design In The Ascocotyle Complex Of Species, Mark H. Armitage
Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism
Microscopic heterophyid trematode parasitic worms of the Genus Ascocotyle infect certain amnicolid and hydrobiid snails and certain cyprinodont and poeciliid estuarine fishes as first and second intermediate hosts. Adult trematode worms are found to mature in the intestines of particular definitive hosts, most often piscivorous birds. but also certain mammals. A survey of these parasites. harvested from fish hearts and gills collected in Mississippi, Texas and California, shows that they are are obligated to complex life cycles requiring at least three disparate and different hosts to achieve fecundity. Methods of infection, host infection site and host specificity are often unique …
