Service And Empathy: A Comparison Study Of Intercultural Experiences Among Students At Mississippi College, Victoria Rose Marshall Dec 2019

Service And Empathy: A Comparison Study Of Intercultural Experiences Among Students At Mississippi College, Victoria Rose Marshall

Theses and Dissertations

Service to the community is a key element in mission statements of public and private universities. In the 21st century, higher education shifted by establishing community engagement offices and encouraging student community service through service-learning. Previous literature indicated that experiential learning increased ethnocultural empathy and volunteerism among college students. This study compares two experiential learning programs’ influence on the ethnocultural empathy development among college students at Mississippi College, a private, religious-affiliated university to explore how this empathy increases community service. 38 students were asked to complete the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (Wang et al. 2003) and were interviewed about their …

Humanitarian Aid In Haiti: Friend Or Foe?, Samantha L. Tamplin Dec 2019

Humanitarian Aid In Haiti: Friend Or Foe?, Samantha L. Tamplin

Honors Theses

Humanitarian aid to Haiti has both positive and negative effects on a country that is already in a state of turmoil. Considering the aspects of education, economics, and the political climate in Haiti, and after conducting both academic research and primary source interviews from those affected firsthand by these issues, I concluded that outside aid and volunteerism to Haiti, and other third-world countries like it, is ultimately ineffective. Donations coming into Haiti are doing more harm than good because the amount of goods being gathered and shipped to Haiti combined with the instability and corruption of the government in that …

Service-Learning Research For Development: An Option For The Poor In Practice Through Social Analysis And Community Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Kate L. Nolt

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

A group of faculty, staff and students from Creighton University conducted a research project using a strengths-based approach to create a community health needs assessment (CNHA) in the fall of 2017. The instruments, including a survey to determine health status, a focus group questionnaire, an environmental scan and an individual interview instrument, were developed to help shift the paradigm from which many international medical missions are conducted with Creighton’s community partner in the Dominican Republic, the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI). In the process of creating, developing, implementing, assessing and reformulating this strength-based CHNA, researchers encountered both …

Gwu Fall Semester Begins By Celebrating Academic Excellence And Christian Mission, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William M. Downs recently began the semester by presiding over the Fall Academic Convocation and giving a special address to students as part of the Dimensions series. During both programs, Downs focused on Gardner-Webb’s mission. “I want to underscore one important message as we launch this new year,” Downs stated at the Fall Convocation. “And the message is this—we are a private university with a very public mission, and it is incumbent upon all of us to live up to that public mission in some way.”

Examination Of Reflections From Nurse Anesthesia Trainee Volunteers In Honduras, Thomas M. Boyce Aug 2019

Examination Of Reflections From Nurse Anesthesia Trainee Volunteers In Honduras, Thomas M. Boyce

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

There is a lack of surgical and anesthesia services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) which creates an increased burden of disease from otherwise surgically treatable conditions. Nurse anesthesia trainees (NATs) can serve to fill this lack of anesthesia services while also gaining real life experience that can enhance their training. Identifying common experiences and barriers among NATs that have volunteered on a surgical brigade is important to understand the benefits experienced by NATs and to increase volunteer surgical brigade programs among nurse anesthesia programs. A retrospective thematic analysis of 23 written reflections of NATs who participated in a one-week …

Who Is My Neighbor? The Importance Of Global Education For Kinesiology Students, Jessica D. Ventura Aug 2019

Who Is My Neighbor? The Importance Of Global Education For Kinesiology Students, Jessica D. Ventura

Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies

The parable of the Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke illustrates that helping others requires both the ability to reach out to any person and the humility to receive mercy from any person. This active love requires a basic understanding of culture and the ways in which it may affect the values and actions of others. As believers seeking to express God in careers that bring them in contact with any person, kinesiology students have a specific need to understand their global neighbors. This paper first explores the importance of multicultural education as illustrated in the book of …

The Rural Health Physician Narrative: A New Historic Analysis Of Appalachian Representation In Twentieth-Century Rural Physician Narratives, Ashley Smith Aug 2019

The Rural Health Physician Narrative: A New Historic Analysis Of Appalachian Representation In Twentieth-Century Rural Physician Narratives, Ashley Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rural health physician narrative is one of the most understudied genres in non-fictional Appalachian literature. Physician narratives are significant in the historical, social, and political contexts of twentieth-century Appalachian representation. These accounts provide insight into the social contexts in which physicians lived as they wrote about healthcare and Appalachian communities. New Historicism is an analytical tool used to better understand the complexity surrounding Appalachian representation, particularly in terms of the politics of representation, gender, and race that influenced these narratives in the twentieth century. I engage in close readings of narratives written by or about rural health physicians who …
