Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
In this essay I have tried to provide a broad survey of the concept of covenant for Latter-day Saint students of the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I began with a sketch of the history of covenant theology in the Christian tradition showing how the early New Testament idea of a baptismal covenant was soon replaced by the Christian institution of sacraments. Although the covenant idea played little role in the historical developments of Christian theology, it did resurge in the Reformation, but without widespread theological impact.
In contrast, over the last century, the role of the covenant idea …

Next Year In Jerusalem: Exile And Return In Jewish History, Leonard Greenspoon
Next Year In Jerusalem: Exile And Return In Jewish History, Leonard Greenspoon
Studies in Jewish Civilization
Next Year in Jerusalem recognizes that Jews have often experienced or imaged periods of exile and return in their long tradition. The fourteen papers in this collection examine this phenomenon from different approaches, genres, and media. They cover the period from biblical times through today. Among the exiles highlighted are the Babylonian Exile (sixth century BCE), the exile after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 CE), and the years after the Crusaders (tenth century CE). Events of return include the aftermath of the Babylonian Exile (fifth century BCE), the centuries after the Temple’s destruction (first and second CE), and …

Something To Do With A Girl Named Marla: Eros And Gender In David Fincher’S Fight Club, Vernon W. Cisney
Something To Do With A Girl Named Marla: Eros And Gender In David Fincher’S Fight Club, Vernon W. Cisney
Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications
David Fincher’s 1999 film, Fight Club, has been characterized in many ways: as a romantic comedy, an exploration of white, middle-class male angst, an existentialist search for meaning amidst the moral ruins of late capitalism, an anarchist manifesto, and so on. But common to nearly every reading of the film, critical and laudatory alike, is the assumption that Fight Club is indisputably a celebration of misogynistic, masculinist virility and violence. On its face, this assumption appears so overwhelmingly obvious as to render superfluous any argumentation in support thereof, and absurd any opposing argumentation. Consider the ubiquitous homoerotic adulation of the …

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library
Each year, Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list. The result is You’ve Gotta Read This!—a booklet filled with fiction, nonfiction and film recommendations that we hope will offer a reading and viewing go-to list for the summer and beyond.
The 2019 collection has suggestions from 173 employees who offer 258 recommendations of favorite books, films, and television programs that will satisfy a wide range in reading and viewing tastes and genres.
This year’s booklet includes several special features. Two of our regular columnists return once again: James Udden …

Reflections On The Matriarchs’ Orchard: An Alternative Understanding Of Jewish Women And Environmentalism, Arielle Aronoff
Reflections On The Matriarchs’ Orchard: An Alternative Understanding Of Jewish Women And Environmentalism, Arielle Aronoff
Proceedings of GREAT Day
Herbal medicine, native ecological design, and Judaism come together in a study that explores the links between women and natural healing. This presentation will focus on my experience as an intern at Kayam Farm, a Jewish Educational Farm in Reisterstown, Maryland. The history of the four Hebrew Matriarchs, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and Leah, is steeped with trials and tribulations, celebrations and tradition. My internship allowed for me to explore this history and develop an herbal guide to the Matriarchs Orchard. The orchard has been planted as a space for women to celebrate the cycles of life. Our implementation of the …

“Visiting Iniquity Of Fathers Against Sons” In Exodus, Thomas Egger
“Visiting Iniquity Of Fathers Against Sons” In Exodus, Thomas Egger
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Egger, Thomas J. “‘Visiting Iniquity of Fathers against Sons’ in Exodus.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2018. 665 pp.
In two of the most important passages in Exodus (20:5 and 34:7), Yahweh describes himself as “visiting iniquity of fathers against sons, even against members of the third and fourth generations.” Missing in nearly every treatment of this phrase has been any sustained consideration of the phrase within the context of the Exodus narrative itself. Apart from such interpretive grounding, “visiting iniquity of fathers against sons” has shown itself susceptible to widely varied and contradictory readings and, especially, maximally problematizing readings which …
