‘Free People’: Identity Formation Among The Imazighen In Morocco, Milany Duarte, Alana Guzman

Student Symposium

Our project objective was to study cultural and ethnic identity formation among the urban indigenous people of Morocco. The purpose of our project was to adequately represent the voices of the Amazigh community. To do so, we conducted interviews and discussions on the ways in which the Amazigh community experiences cultural, political, and linguistic marginalization. We caputured personal stories of native Imazighen (plural of Amazigh) people and documented their experiences living in urban cities. We photographed traditional Imazighen living spaces and traditions.

China's Lost Face And The Two Koreas: The Effects Of Culture And Identity On Chinese Foreign Policy, Kang Kyu Lee Jan 2019

China's Lost Face And The Two Koreas: The Effects Of Culture And Identity On Chinese Foreign Policy, Kang Kyu Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the question of why China responded particularly harshly to pro-U.S. military actions taken by South Korea, when this nation was identified as a friend to China, while responding less harshly to similar pro-U.S. military actions taken by Japan, who was not identified as a friend. My argument is that these divergent responses were caused by China’s different expectations, according to whether different nations had a perceived identity as a friend or a rival. China’s behaviors are essentially based on its own proclaimed identity and on the perceived identities of others. China has advanced the proclaimed identity of …

Gramscian Perspectives On Populism, Luke William Mooberry Jan 2019

Gramscian Perspectives On Populism, Luke William Mooberry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly liberal states are facing challenges from populist movements. This paper argues that the prison writings of Antonio Gramsci can provide important insights into the phenomenon and how to counteract it. The first two sections outline a set of Gramscian analytical tools: hegemony, non-hegemony, passive revolution, and Caesarism. These theoretical tools are then applied to different periods of the Third Republic of France, 1870-1940. This paper looks at this French example because it features unique relationships between populism, ideology, and the experience of liberalism prior to World War II. The third section demonstrates the implications of non-hegemony within international society, …

Conditions Affecting The Outcome Of Peace Operations In Post-Cold War Africa, Aaron Kyle Smith Jan 2019

Conditions Affecting The Outcome Of Peace Operations In Post-Cold War Africa, Aaron Kyle Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What factors have led to successful outcomes in international peace operations conducted in Sub Saharan African countries? What factors explain mission failure? I proposed a basic theory of peace operations that linked conflict conditions to mandate design to the capability of an intervening force deployed for mission implementation developed from arguments and empirical results of previous research.

Data on 86 peace operations that occurred in 23 African states covering 33 separate conflict periods between 1990 and 2015 was analyzed. My main findings showed that mandates were derived from conflict assessments and determined the size of intervening force required. The results …

Migration Governance In Countries Of Transit: Assessing Policy Implications In Algeria, Brittany R. Van Soest Jan 2019

Migration Governance In Countries Of Transit: Assessing Policy Implications In Algeria, Brittany R. Van Soest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Located between sub-Saharan Africa and southern Europe on the edge of the Mediterranean the country of Algeria has experienced the challenges of a transit state in attempting to prevent irregular migration through its territory. The question guiding this research aimed to explore the conditions under which and with what regard to sovereignty do countries that experience extensive through-migration adopt global governance norms and implement policies which contribute to the broader international goals of safe, orderly and regular migration. This research project examines findings from an expert survey which indicate that, despite a strong sovereignty ethic, Algeria approaches irregular migration governance …
