A tectonic block of garnet quartzite in the amphibolite-facies melange of the Catalina Schist (Santa Catalina Island, California, USA) records the metasomatic pre-treatment of high-delta O-18 sediments as they enter the subduction zone. The block is primarily quartz, but contains two generations of garnet that record extreme oxygen isotope disequilibrium and inverse fractionations between garnet cores and matrix quartz. Rare millimeter-scale garnet crystals record prograde cation zoning patterns, whereas more abundant similar to 200-mu m-diameter crystals have the same composition as rims on the larger garnets. Garnets of both generations have high-delta O-18 cores (20.8 parts per thousand-26.3 parts per …

Irrigation and Melioration

Cavitation occurrence in hydroabrasive flows which can lead to rather complex phenomena and complicate the understanding of the process essence is considered in the paper. To date, the wear of operating units in centrifugal and axial pumps, depending on the mode of their operation, has not been sufficiently studied and the methods to choose the operating modes considering the wear of their parts have not been developed. The paper presents the results of comprehensive laboratory and field studies on the wear rate of units in the flow part of centrifugal and axial pumps. An alternating pulsating load leads to an …

Remark On Creatio Ex Nihilo, Intelligent Design And Emergence Philosophy Approaches To Origin Of The Universe, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

It is known that the Big Bang theory was based on the concept of creation ex nihilo, after ancient Greek philosophers. In this paper, we will make few remark on the concept of creatio ex nihilo (as a commentary to a recent paper by Kalachanis, Athanasios Anastasiou, Ioannis Kostikas, Efstratios Theodossious and Мilan S. Dimitrijevi), as well as two other approaches, i.e. Intelligent Design and Emergence Theory by Clayton/Yong. As continuation of our recent paper to appear in forthcoming issue of J. Asia Mathematika, we argue that beside the above three approaches, a new concept called creatio ex-rotatione offers a …

On The New Concept Creatio Ex-Rotatione, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

It is known that the Big Bang theory was based on the concept of creation ex nihilo, after ancient Greek philosophers. In this paper, we discuss the concept of creatio ex nihilo, as well as two other approaches - Intelligent Design and Emergence Theory. We argue that beside the above three approaches, a new concept called creatio ex-rotatione offers a resolution to the long standing disputes between beginning and eternity of the Universe. We agree with Vaas: [h]ow a conceptual and perhaps physical solution of the temporal aspect of Immanuel Kant’s “first antinomy of pure reason” is possible, i.e., how …

Probing Fretting Performance Of Dlc And Mos2 Films Under Fluid Lubrication, Wenhua Zhuang, Hao Li, Wen Li, Xiaoqiang Fan, Jifan He, Zhenbing Cai, Wang Fu, Guangan Zhang, Shanhong Wan, Minhao Zhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Transition from onefold to synergistic lubrication for solving fretting wear and fatigue problems is of great practical significance, because fluids can regulate fretting regime for minimizing wear, solid films can restrain nucleation and formation of crack. Here synergistic lubrication coatings were prepared using diamond-like carbon (DLC) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films as anti-wear/fatigue layer, and high-performance lubricants (including silicone oil, ionic liquids, multialkylated cyclopentanes and perfluoropolyethers (PFPE)) as flowable lubrication layer. Their fretting performance was evaluated in detail and fretting mechanism was revealed by surface/interface analysis techniques. Results determine the synergistic lubrication coatings with good anti-wear and anti-fatigue abilities, deriving …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of A Synthetic Jet Ejector, Ziad Alaswad Jan 2019

Experimental And Numerical Study Of A Synthetic Jet Ejector, Ziad Alaswad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A traditional synthetic jet ejector is a combination of synthetic jet and mixing tube or shroud in which flow from the surroundings is entrained through the space between the jet and shroud and discharged from the end of a mixing tube. An objective of the current research is to evaluate the accuracy of a previous simplified numerical model using results from an improved numerical model and an experimental synthetic jet ejector water flow facility. The improved model gives a better representation of the primary jet velocity profile by accurately modeling the piston motion using the dynamic mesh option. Also, flow …

Fluid Power Vehicle Competition, Madison Graham, Wayne Ritchie, Emily Dicks, Ariana Cupello

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Our senior design project for the Honors College and the Department of Mechanical Engineering was to design a fluid powered vehicle. Our design was tested in an official capacity against other universities’ vehicles at the Fluid Powered Vehicle Challenge hosted and funded by the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) and its industry partners. This competition had six different evaluations for our vehicle design; three race events, midway presentation, final presentation, and safety inspection. The three different race events were the sprint race, the efficiency race, and the endurance race. The sprint race was a 475 feet speed test, the efficiency …
