International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1225-1243, 2019. Although fitness may benefit cognition in youth, most attention has been given to cardiorespiratory fitness despite the health benefits of muscular fitness. Few studies have examined interventions that incorporate both cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness or have been offered during school recess. Furthermore, most fitness intervention studies examining cognitive outcomes have not reported on implementation information. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy on fitness and cognition of a recess intervention in elementary school children. Two schools were randomized to either a 3-month cardiorespiratory and …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1244-1253, 2019. It is recommended that adults get at minimum 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in bouts of 10 minutes or greaterevery week. Walking cadence (steps per minute) is one easy way to estimate intensity required, however tools that claim to quantify walking intensity via walking cadence have not been validated in adults. We aimed to validate: 1- the accuracy of walking cadence measurement by the Piezo RxD pedometer, Polar Stride Sensor Bluetooth Smart foot pod, and Garmin Ant+ foot pod at different speeds and slopes and 2- the ability of the Piezo …

Assessing Physical Activity Levels And Motivation In An Urban Midwest Private Liberal Arts College, Michael A. Kantor, Ana Freire Ribeiro
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1169-1178, 2019. Recent research indicates that over one third of U.S. adults are obese and 51.6% of adults meet the recommended 2008 physical activity (PA) guidelines. In this context, understanding what makes people engage or not in PA becomes of key importance when attempting to prevent obesity and its related comorbidities. The objective is to assess the PA and motivation levels of students, faculty, and staff in an urban Midwest Private College. Participants completed an anonymous online survey (n=119) on PA and Exercise Motivation. Fitness levels were tested and obtained from wellness assessments (n=74). …

Body mass index (BMI) has been used for years by clinicians to approximate total body fat. However, the body adiposity index (BAI), body adiposity index from the FELS longitudinal study (BAIFELS), and an equation developed by Deurenberg et al. (BFD) were created recently to offset BMI’s limitations and accurately estimate percent body fat (%BF). The prevalence of overweight and obese Caucasian men is increasing in the United States; currently, there is no established way to quickly and accurately predict their %BF. Purpose: To compare the existing %BF equations (BAI, BAIFELS, and BFD) to measured %BF via air displacement plethysmography (ADP) …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 847-858, 2019. The body drag (BD) is used as a test to measure a law enforcement officer (LEO) recruit’s capability to rescue an individual. However, the physical characteristics associated with faster BD performance have not been identified. It could be expected that lower- body power, often measured via jump performance, could positively relate to BD performance. This study investigated the relationship between the vertical jump (VJ), peak anaerobic power measured in watts (PAPw), power-to-body mass ratio (P:BM), standing broad jump (SBJ), and relative SBJ, with BD velocity in LEO recruits. Retrospective analysis of data …
