Attitudes And Re-Enrollment Intentions To Participate In Youth Soccer Among Parents, Coaches, And Players In Central Texas, Ashleigh Johnson, Anna Wilkinson, Harold W. Kohl Iii

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Physical activity in youth declines with age, which may be due in part to decreased sports participation. However, few studies include perspectives from parents/coaches as well as players when examining reasons for participation and dropout from organized sports such as soccer. PURPOSE: To describe and compare soccer-related attitudes and intention to re-enroll among parents/legal guardians, coaches, and players at a youth soccer program in Central Texas. METHODS: Parents (n=152), coaches (n=55), and players (n=28) completed an online survey in November-December 2018. Participants were eligible if they 1) coached and/or had children aged 10-17 years who played soccer or …

Psychological Impact Of Strongman Training, Joseph B. Eberhardt, Jeb F. Struder, Heather E. Webb Feb 2019

Psychological Impact Of Strongman Training, Joseph B. Eberhardt, Jeb F. Struder, Heather E. Webb

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

High intensity exercise has been shown to decrease stress and tension, increase energy and generally show greater improvements in mood when compared to lower intensity exercise. However, these findings have primarily been shown to occur as a result of longer duration aerobic exercise, while the impact of resistance training has had more mixed results. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the after the effect of a Strongman-type exercise (Farmers walk) on measures of anxiety, perceived exertion, and affect. Methods: Fourteen subjects (mean age ± SE = 21.6 yrs. ± 0.45; height = 172.53 cm ± 2.34; weight …

Body Esteem In College Students: The Influence Of Psychosocial And Demographic Variables, Jessica Gonzalez, Isabel Soto, Zavina Gonzalez, Chelsea K. Duncan, Brian E. Menaker, Amber M. Shipherd Feb 2019

Body Esteem In College Students: The Influence Of Psychosocial And Demographic Variables, Jessica Gonzalez, Isabel Soto, Zavina Gonzalez, Chelsea K. Duncan, Brian E. Menaker, Amber M. Shipherd

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Level of physical activity, BMI, and various psychosocial factors have been found to influence body esteem. Most body esteem research focuses on Caucasians, necessitating examination of the impact of these variables on body esteem in other ethnicities. PURPOSE: To examine the effects of psychosocial and demographic variables (e.g. media usage, peer/family influences, degree of internalization, perfectionism, level of physical activity, and BMI) on body esteem in students at a Hispanic serving institution. METHODS: Eighty-four participants, predominantly identifying as Hispanic (n = 64), completed measures of demographic and psychosocial variables. Participants also completed body esteem instruments before and after …

Gender Differences In Body Esteem Following Social Media Exposure, Isabel Soto, Jessica Gonzalez, Zavina Gonzalez, Chelsea K. Duncan, Brian E. Menaker, Amber M. Shipherd Feb 2019

Gender Differences In Body Esteem Following Social Media Exposure, Isabel Soto, Jessica Gonzalez, Zavina Gonzalez, Chelsea K. Duncan, Brian E. Menaker, Amber M. Shipherd

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Prior research has uncovered upwards of 90% of college students feel dissatisfied with their body image or appearance. Social media is one of the biggest influences of negative body image by pressuring individuals to adhere to often unrealistic appearance ideals. Women often have a more negative view towards their body, but the rate of males with body image disturbances has increased substantially. In addition to gender differences, ethnic differences have also been found in body image or body esteem, however, the majority of research has focused on Caucasians. This has created a need to examine body esteem in other ethnicities. …

The Effect Of Moderate Intensity Aerobic Exercise On Affect And Exercise Intention In Active And Inactive College Students, Allison M. Kyral, Amber M. Shipherd, Christopher M. Hearon Feb 2019

The Effect Of Moderate Intensity Aerobic Exercise On Affect And Exercise Intention In Active And Inactive College Students, Allison M. Kyral, Amber M. Shipherd, Christopher M. Hearon

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Physical activity has long been established as an essential behavior for vital physical and psychosocial health outcomes, but lack of physical activity is still a rampant problem worldwide. Numerous factors influence physical activity participation, including affect, a measure of well-being. Research has found that affect increases following an exercise session, though some recent studies have discovered affect can be lower when measured during exercise, suggesting low affect during exercise may contribute to physical inactivity. PURPOSE: To explore the differences in affect between male (M) and female (F), and active (ACT) and inactive (INACT) college students during moderate intensity exercise. …

Mental Health Best Practices In Ncaa: The Bidirectional Relationship Between Mental Toughness And Self-Compassion, R. Noah Padgett, Jeffrey S. Forsse, Zacharias Papadakis, Paul J. Deal, Andreas Stamatis Dr. Feb 2019

Mental Health Best Practices In Ncaa: The Bidirectional Relationship Between Mental Toughness And Self-Compassion, R. Noah Padgett, Jeffrey S. Forsse, Zacharias Papadakis, Paul J. Deal, Andreas Stamatis Dr.

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Based on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reports, student-athletes’ well-being is compromised by sub-clinical issues of mental health (MH) disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Preliminary data have shown a positive relationship between mental toughness (MT) and MH, self-compassion (SC) and MH, and SC and MT. To date, possible indirect causal relationships between these three constructs have not been investigated. PURPOSE: To confirm the three aforementioned relationships in NCAA athletes and explore the mediation role of MT and SC on the SC-MH and MT-MH relationships, respectively. Hypotheses: (1) MT will correlate positively with MH, (2) SC will correlate positively …
