Efficacy Of Low Level Laser Therapy In The Treatment Of Postherpetic Neuralgia, Lili Legiawati, Marsha Bianti

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology & Venereology Indonesia

Background: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster (HZ) and defined as pain that persists for more than 90 days after the onset of HZ rash. The chronic pain of PHN is debilitating and often associated with significant morbidity. It is a neuropathic pain and manifests as allodynia, hyperalgesia, or spontaneous pain. Although it is not considered to be life-threatening, sometime HZ is inadequately treated and may result in more severe PHN. Various treatment protocols for PHN are available; however, the result remains unsatisfactorily. The use of low level laser therapy (LLLT) in pain management …

Counseling Sexual Assaulted Adolescents And Young Adults, Luann Gregorich

Counselor Education Capstones

Sexual assault affects men, women and children in the United States. Defining sexual assault and various forms of rape can help to formulate knowledge of the context of assaults that victims experience. There are certain populations that are at risk for sexual victimization. College aged individuals are at a higher risk for sexual assault than any other age group. There are four main risk factors for this age group that contribute to the vulnerability of assault. The impact of assault and rape on survivors can include emotional, physical and psychological issues. For clinicians, evidence -based treatments, understanding risk factors, and …

Clinician Identified Barriers To Treatment For Individuals In Appalachia With Opioid Use Disorder Following Release From Prison: A Social Ecological Approach, Amanda M. Bunting, Carrie B. Oser, Michele Staton, Katherine S. Eddens, Hannah K. Knudsen

Sociology Faculty Publications

Background: The non-medical use of opioids has reached epidemic levels nationwide, and rural areas have been particularly affected by increasing rates of overdose mortality as well as increases in the prison population. Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) are at increased risk for relapse and overdose upon reentry to the community due to decreased tolerance during incarceration. It is crucial to identify barriers to substance use disorder treatment post-release from prison because treatment can be particularly difficult to access in resource-limited rural Appalachia.

Methods: A social ecological framework was utilized to examine barriers to community-based substance use treatment among individuals …

A Systematic Literature Review Of Behavioral Interventions For Phelan-Mcdermid Syndrome, Kate Anne Schroeder

Culminating Projects in Community Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy

Abstract

The purpose of this review was to summarize literature relating to treatment of Phelan-McDermid syndrome and identify ways in which applied behavior analysis can benefit this population. A systematic literature search revealed 23 articles focusing on treatment of Phelan-McDermid syndrome. Results indicated that previous interventions included: hormones, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, selective reuptake inhibitors, psychotropics, and anxiolytics/sleeping pills. Despite reported medical successes, behavioral challenges facing the Phelan-McDermid syndrome community parallels those behavior analysts routinely address. To that end, the review concludes with ways in which applied behavior analysis can support those affected by Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study is to examine the affect that treatment services have on the criminal justice outcomes of women on probation. The research to date on the treatment services provided to the criminal justice population has tended to focus on prisoners rather than probationers, with even fewer studies that include samples of women on probation. This study will investigate the impact on criminal justice outcomes of services intended to treat issues identified to increase recidivism among female probationers, such as substance use disorders, illicit drug use, mental health issues, and poverty. An additional assessment is conducted to determine …

Evaluating Recommendations Versus Utilization Of Essential Components Of A Functional Analysis Procedure, Alissa Conway Dec 2018

Evaluating Recommendations Versus Utilization Of Essential Components Of A Functional Analysis Procedure, Alissa Conway

Dissertations

Functional behavior assessment (FBA) has been identified as an essential process for behavior analytic practitioners to identify the variables maintaining challenging behaviors (BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts (PECC), 3.01ab, 2014). FBAs include a range of strategies, including indirect measures (e.g., interviews and questionnaires) and direct measures of behavior (descriptive and experimental strategies). Functional analysis (FA) is typically considered the most sophisticated of the options subsumed under FBAs in that it involves both direct measures of behavior and experimental manipulation of hypothesized controlling variables to identify controlling variables for challenging behaviors. The results of FAs allow practitioners …

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Among Sexual Minority Youth: An Etiological And Treatment Overview, Lauren C. Smithee, Brock W. Sumner, Roy A. Bean

Faculty Publications

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among sexual minority youth (SMY) is a problem that is growing in attention yet is understudied and requires an informed response from therapists who engage in clinical work with youth. This paper proposes a unique model of treatment for working with SMY who engage in NSSI, accounting for proximal, distal, and systemic factors that influence the etiology of NSSI. This model is based on a review of two bodies of clinical literature: (a) treating adolescent NSSI and (b) working with SMY and their families. As an etiological theory of self-harm, Nock (2009) is applied to SMY, factoring …

Cd147 As A Potential Therapeutic Target In Glioblastoma Treatment, Beau Adams

All NMU Master's Theses

Glioblastoma (GBM) tumors are the most common and lethal form of cancer in the central nervous system (CNS). GBM tumors appear to contain a mixture of different cell types, which makes them difficult to treat. GBM cells exhibit altered morphology from normal cells on several different levels, which highlights different pathways to potentially target for therapeutic treatments. The human surface glycoprotein CD147, also known as basigin, is expressed at significantly higher levels in GBMs compared to non-neoplastic brain tissue. Furthermore, levels of CD147 expression correlate with brain tumor progression and show the highest expression in GBM. Here, we suppressed tumor …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Abdominal-pelvic pain is the dominant symptom in endometriosis, one of the most common pathologies that affect women, being also a multifactorial disorder. Exploratory laparoscopy allows the correct assessment of the location as well as severity and extent of the lesions, thus representing the current gold standard in diagnosis. The correlation of pain intensity with the evolutionary stage of endometriosis is inconstant. Surgical treatment, preferably performed laparoscopically, includes the excision of the ectopic endometrium, having as a primary objective the control of persistent pain and the removal of all endometriotic foci. This procedure helps to improve the life quality of the …

How The Misunderstanding That Heroin Addiction Is A Choice And The Stigma Surrounding Medication-Assisted Treatment Leads To More Overdose Deaths, Margaret M. Drew

Student Publications

Heroin is an opioid that commonly appears as white or brown powder. Eventually a person can become physically dependent on heroin, meaning the body begins to expect the drug. A sudden withdrawal from the drug can cause intense symptoms such as vomiting, muscle pain, and cravings, often leading to relapse (Shannon, p. 172). Although the initial decision to try heroin may be up to the addict, due to the dependence one develops when using heroin, addiction eventually morphs into an involuntary compulsion. There are many factors out of an individual’s control that influence their likelihood of trying heroin and becoming …

A Psychopathological Approach To Safety Engineering In Ai And Agi, Vahid Behzadan, Arslan Munir, Roman V. Yampolskiy Aug 2018

A Psychopathological Approach To Safety Engineering In Ai And Agi, Vahid Behzadan, Arslan Munir, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty Scholarship

The complexity of dynamics in AI techniques is already approaching that of complex adaptive systems, thus curtailing the feasibility of formal controllability and reachability analysis in the context of AI safety. It follows that the envisioned instances of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will also suffer from challenges of complexity. To tackle such issues, we propose the modeling of deleterious behaviors in AI and AGI as psychological disorders, thereby enabling the employment of psychopathological approaches to analysis and control of misbehaviors. Accordingly, we present a discussion on the feasibility of the psychopathological approaches to AI safety, and propose general directions for …
