This research investigates the effect that knots in close proximity have on strength properties of southern pine lumber. The project involved specimens of 2×4 dimension southern yellow pine lumber exhibiting multiple knots in close proximity. Knot dimensions were measured to determine the knot diameter (KD) parallel to the cross-section of the specimen, knot area (KA), and clear wood (CW). In addition, the density (D) using the entire specimen weight by volume was determined. Widows in Nigeria endure adverse and traumatic practices that affect their health, well-being, and rights as women. After decades of struggle and resistance against persistent widowhood practices, this study sought to portray in Nigerian widows, hidden strengths, resilience, and agency rather than their vulnerability and powerlessness. Analysis of secondary scholarship, interviews, and survey questionnaires reveal that some Nigerian widows are able to cope even as they navigate through the challenges and trauma of demeaning and stressful practices. Gaining an understanding of the physical capabilities and capacities that underpin the performance of a complex skill are important to help guide performance development at the elite level. The purpose of this study was to improve understanding of the force generating characteristics that relate to performance in elite swimmers. Three elite butterfly swimmers were tested over six weeks to examine the interactions between force-derived variables from 30 s of maximal tethered swimming and maximal 50m swimming performance, both performed using the butterfly stroke. The purpose of this study was to review the literature on the relationship between dry-land resistance training and swim start performance in competitive swimming. It is common practice in competitive swimming to use dry-land resistance training to increase muscular strength and power. Given the explosive nature of the swim start, it would appear that high levels of lower body muscular strength and power are necessary to enhance this component in swimming. Return-To-Play Criteria Following Acl Reconstruction Surgery: A Case Study Over Nine-Months, Steven Leigh

This case study investigated changes in an injured athlete’s function, gait kinematics and parameters, and strength over nine months of ACL rehabilitation. The participant completed laboratory assessments at 6, 12, 24, and 36 weeks post-op, which included a functional outcome questionnaire, a gait evaluation with an electromagnetic tracking system and force plates, and a strength test with an isokinetic dynamometer. Left to right side differences in function, gait kinematics and parameters, and strength were assessed non-parametrically. Results indicated persistent strength disparities and dysfunction at terminal knee extension, even when return-to-play was approved clinically. Kinematics may be useful to guide a …

A Targeted Load-Carriage Training Program Elicits Positive Adaptations After 10-Weeks, Jodie A. Wills, David J. Saxby, Daniel J. Glassbrook, Tim L.A Doyle

The purpose of this study was to identify and characterise physical performance responses to a targeted 10-week load-carriage physical training intervention in males. Performance measures of maximal strength, heart rate, rating of perceived exertion, and basic fitness from nine male civilians before and after the 10-week training intervention are presented. There were significant increases in maximal force (~200 N) and aerobic performance (Level. Shuttle 8.9 vs 9,4 variables). Small-to-large effect sizes were shown for basic fitness and perceptual responses. The 10-week load-carriage physical training intervention elicited physical performance improvements and may facilitate load-carriage task performance.

Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) is an Ayurvedic herb categorized as having “rasayana” (rejuvenator), longevity, and revitalizing properties. Sensoril® is a standardized aqueous extract of the roots and leaves of Withania somnifera. Purpose: To examine the impact of Sensoril® supplementation on strength training adaptations. Methods: Recreationally active men (26.5 ± 6.4 years, 181 ± 6.8 cm, 86.9 ± 12.5 kg, 24.5 ± 6.6% fat) were randomized in a double-blind fashion to placebo (PLA, n = 19) or 500 mg/d Sensoril® (S500, n = 19). Self-healing mechanism in concrete has been so far achieved mainly by three approaches: autogenous healing, encapsulation of polymeric material, and biologically induced mineralization of calcium carbonate. The microbial approach prevails over the other two approaches due to the high compatibility between the filler material and the concrete compositions. Although the term “microbe” refers to many different types of organisms, research work on self-healing concrete has been so far restricted to bacteria. This poster exhibits the testing and research done on general Portland Cement Concrete with the addition of coir (coconut) fibers as reinforcement. Using the fundamental constituents of cement (water, cement, fine and coarse aggregate) and processed coir fiber, concrete specimens were batched to test for compressive and flexural strengths (per appropriate ASTM standards). Cylindrical and rectangular beam specimens were subjected to loadings until failure occurred. The capacity and modes of failures of the specimens were observed. It was determined that:

1-in-3 persons with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) develop chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is characterized by progressive renal dysfunction leading to end-stage renal disease. In response to elevated blood glucose and systemic inflammation of diabetes, a process of active thickening of the renal glomerular basement membrane ensues with concomitant damage to the structural supports (podocytes) of the kidneyճ filtration barrier. The purpose of this study was to examine the force-time differences between concentric-only half-squats (COHS) performed with ballistic (BAL) or non-ballistic (NBAL) intent across a range of loads. Eighteen resistance-trained men performed either BAL or NBAL COHS at 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90% of their one repetition maximum (1RM) COHS. Relative peak force (PF) and relative impulse from 0–50 ms (Imp50), 0–90 ms (Imp90), 0–200 ms (Imp200), and 0–250 ms (Imp250) were compared using a series of 2 × 4 (intent × load) repeated measures ANOVAs with Bonferroni post hoc tests. Mussels and other marine creatures adhere very well in underwater environments, having the ability to withstand the force of the sea. These animals have inspired synthetic biomimetic adhesives for wet systems, presenting potential for biomedical applications. However, most current commercial adhesives tend to be brittle, not resisting repetitive movements. This study assesses toughening strategies to improve the mussel-inspired adhesives’ ductility while maintaining its strength. Purpose: Early adaptations of eccentric training show several advantages over concentric training. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of 4 weeks of multi-joint eccentric training versus traditional leg press training on muscle strength, rate of torque development (RTD; rapid strength) and jump and sprint performance adaptations.

It is important to understand the mechanical properties of the bonding between the adjacent layers of 3D printed parts build by fused deposition modeling. The bonding process is highly nonlinear and depends on various geometrical and thermal process parameters. This work aims to quantify the degree of bonding by calculating bond potential between the extruded layers using finite element heat transfer analysis. In recent years, a new class of dietary supplements called multi-ingredient pre-workout supplements (MIPS) has increased in popularity. High-heeled shoes (HHS) have been known to present biomechanical imbalances in lower-leg mechanics at the pedestrian level, but have not been thoroughly studied in the context of highly dynamic movement, such as dance. In order to analyze the effects of 2.5-inch and 3.0-inch soft-soled character shoes (CS) worn by female collegiate musical theatre dancers during rehearsals, selected subjects completed a written questionnaire, the star balance excursion test, and a heel raise test. Purpose: The relationship between changes in muscle size and strength may be affected by both measurement and statistical approaches, but their effects have not been fully considered or quantified. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to explore how different methods of measurement and analysis can affect inferences surrounding the relationship between hypertrophy and strength gain.

Methods: Data from a previous study—in which participants performed eight weeks of elbow flexor training, followed by an eight-week period of detraining—were reanalyzed using different statistical models, including standard between-subject correlations, analysis of covariance, and hierarchical linear modeling.

Purpose: To determine if jumping-performance changes during a peaking phase differed among returners and new players on a female collegiate volleyball team and to determine which variables best explained the variation in performance changes.

Methods: Fourteen volleyball players were divided into 2 groups—returners (n = 7) and new players (n = 7)—who completed a 5-wk peaking phase prior to conference championships. Players were tested at baseline before the preseason on measures of the vastus lateralis cross-sectional area using ultrasonography, estimated back-squat 1-repetition maximum, countermovement jump height (JH), and relative peak power on a force platform. The effects of low carbohydrate (CHO), high fat (LCHF) diets on adaptations to high-intensity exercise have recently gained interest. Consuming a LCHF may potentially decrease the ability to use CHO during exercise and impair high-intensity exercise adaptations. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the importance of CHO timing while consuming a LCHF diet and completing a high-intensity exercise program. Triphasic training is a method popularized by Cal Dietz (Dietz & Peterson, 2012) which includes three different phases: accumulation, transmutation, and realization. Different goals are set for each phase with power development being the overarching theme.
