The Wicker King, Meagan Andrus Dec 2018

The Wicker King, Meagan Andrus

Children's Book and Media Review

Jack and August are unconventional friends and have been since they were little. In high school, it seems like nothing much will change: they'll each hang out with different friend groups at school, but in the evenings they'll do homework together, eat dinner together, or explore the woods together. Despite the fact that Jack's parents are never home and August's mom is severely depressed, they are happy with their lives. But soon, Jack starts seeing things that August doesn't, things that scare him. August doesn't know what to do, so he figures the best way to deal with Jack's visions …

The Reality And The Perception Of Greek Life At Grand Valley State University, Katherine Smigelski Dec 2018

The Reality And The Perception Of Greek Life At Grand Valley State University, Katherine Smigelski

Honors Projects

This research was conducted in order to determine whether Grand Valley’s Greek life atmosphere is stereotypical of Greek life around the country, as portrayed in the media, or if the reality is better than the perception. 179 responses were collected from current Grand Valley State University members of Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association organizations to determine whether their reality of their organizations is accurate compared to the perception of their organizations.

Languages Of Reality, Sarah Lindquist Sep 2018

Languages Of Reality, Sarah Lindquist

Senior Theses

Spiritual and philosophic systems and constructs are embedded in the matrix of reality to explicate what cannot be known, but only experienced: Absolute Reality. Religious and spiritual traditions exist to serve as a kind of interface with ultimate reality, or, a unitive state of consciousness, by using symbolic form and language to impart teachings about the nature of reality to spiritual aspirants. The use of symbolic language is integral to these teachings because unitive states of consciousness are not possible to convey to the spiritual seeker using ordinary language; a bridge between the known and the experienced is created with …

Beyond Flat Space: Representing Architecture In Virtual Reality, Holden Holley May 2018

Beyond Flat Space: Representing Architecture In Virtual Reality, Holden Holley

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

As architects, most of us go through years of training and experience just to read and draw plans, sections, and elevations. As students, we are taught how to read a plan and dissect the information we need to understand the spatial relationships. There are many times, however, that a plan doesn’t really tell us what experiencing this space is like. And how is the untrained client supposed to understand how this space really works? Isn’t that our job as architects, to represent our designs well enough to our clients that we communicate to them everything necessary for understanding this space …

The End Of The Triad:Morality, Reality, And The Ideal Deterrent, Jeffrey A. Zink May 2018

The End Of The Triad:Morality, Reality, And The Ideal Deterrent, Jeffrey A. Zink

Naval War College Review

Since the closing days of the World War II, we have witnessed an evolution of the national nuclear deterrence strategy. From the early days of Massive Retaliation, born of our nuclear monopoly, we have seen the strategy pass through stages of Mutual Assured Destruction, Flexible Response, and a graduated scale of destruction sufficiency. But today’s radically altered geopolitical environment calls for a radically altered deterrent strategy.

Why I Want To Become An Imagineer: Building An Experience, Paul Debaun May 2018

Why I Want To Become An Imagineer: Building An Experience, Paul Debaun

All Theses

Journey to Proxima Centauri is an immersive VR experience where the user takes on the role of a special operative sent to uncover the mystery of the missing androids. The experience design is inspired by Disney Imagineering, and the experience story is inspired by the early 20th century adventures of Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic journey. We explore what it means to be human and what the value of life is through immersive storytelling. The production of this experience spanned over 9 months and involved the talents of 18 people. The experience was built in Unreal Engine and uses a custom-designed motion …

An Investigation, Development, And Application Of Lighting Design For Virtual Reality Using Unreal Engine, Sarah Lydia Ann Martin May 2018

An Investigation, Development, And Application Of Lighting Design For Virtual Reality Using Unreal Engine, Sarah Lydia Ann Martin

All Theses

Humanity has used lighting for millennia to chase away encroaching darkness, to increase the power of narrative, and to enhance the appeal and mood in crafted en-vironments. Theater, cinema, and architecture, among other fields, have developed, applied, and refined concepts of using light as a directed tool, but the relatively young field of virtual reality has not yet developed rigorous conventions. This thesis doc-ument describes work in investigating, developing, and applying designs for lighting conventions in virtual reality. Traditional artwork, photography, cinema, video-game, and environment lighting are considered and used to extrapolate concepts for lighting within virtual-reality applications. The developed …

Spatial Feedback As A Mechanism To Improve Topographic Map Literacy Using The Augmented Reality Sandbox, Justin Wayne Moore Jan 2018

Spatial Feedback As A Mechanism To Improve Topographic Map Literacy Using The Augmented Reality Sandbox, Justin Wayne Moore

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Topographic maps represent three-dimensional (3D) terrain using a system of two-dimensional (2D) symbols. To facilitate students’ understanding of topographic maps, the Augmented Reality (AR) Sandbox reads the elevation of actual sand and projects elevation information onto the sand’s surface (e.g., contour lines). Although over 600 institutions have built AR Sandboxes to help people interpret topographic maps, classroom studies using the AR Sandbox have not found significant gains on topographic map assessments. The present study is a 22 design testing the affordances of the AR Sandbox in a one on one, laboratory setting. In the first level of the study, participants …

The Construction Of Truth In Fiction: An Analysis Of The Faux Footage Genre In Television, Samantha Richards Jan 2018

The Construction Of Truth In Fiction: An Analysis Of The Faux Footage Genre In Television, Samantha Richards

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper explores the way that “truth” is constructed in a fictional sphere through visual and narrative references. I draw upon Caetlin Benson-Allott’s Paranormal Spectatorship, and Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin’s Remediation to inform my analysis of these constructions. I look specifically at Roanoke, the sixth season of American Horror Story, to provide examples of the way faux footage horror’s unique use of the subjective shot constructs the spectator as both a witness and an interrogator, and creates an aesthetic language of truth. While being immersed in the story, viewers are simultaneously invited to consider how …

Matter, Memory, Multiverse : The Prism Of Reality, Sean William Johnson Jan 2018

Matter, Memory, Multiverse : The Prism Of Reality, Sean William Johnson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

When Isaac Newton conducted his prism experiment, and discovered a “new theory of light and colours,” the experiment had far more social and scientific import than he could have anticipated. In his paper, Newton broke “whiteness” down into its true, conglomerate, multi-layered essence. “For the first time,” a phrase that was used quite a bit during the Enlightenment and Restoration of the 17th-18th centuries, whiteness was understood as a composite that contained every other colour. What happens to the paradox of the Enlightenment-- predicated upon “individuality” that was strangely restricted to white males-- when the very basis of “whiteness” has …

Uncovering The Lost Knowledge Of The Imagination In Films, Seda, Daniel A. Jan 2018

Uncovering The Lost Knowledge Of The Imagination In Films, Seda, Daniel A.

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Films have forever changed the way in which humans perceive reality and have provided significant opportunities to spread knowledge in ways that are both entertaining and deceptive. Uncovering the lost knowledge of the imagination shifts an individual’s perceptions of a shared experience and exposes film’s persuasive power to penetrate the psyche. This paper explores the constitutions of reality and how humans are able to tap into other realms of consciousness through mediums of creative expression. Topics such as the origins of life, the hidden knowledge of secret societies, and the burgeoning full disclosure movement for truth are discussed as a …
