Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Background: Medicare's mandatory bundle for hip and knee arthroplasty necessitates provider accountability for quality and cost of care to 90 days, and wound closure may be a key area of consideration. The DERMABOND
Methods: A 90-day economic model was developed assuming 500 annual hip/knee arthroplasties for a typical US hospital setting. In current practice, wound closure methods for the final skin layer were set to 50% sutures and 50% staples. In future practice, this distribution shifted to 20% sutures, 20% staples, and 60% Skin Closure System. Health care resources included materials (eg, staplers, steri-strips, and traditional/barbed sutures), standard or premium …

The Continuing Epidemic Of Hepatitis C In The United States: The Case Of West Virginia, David P. Paul Iii, Neha Botre, Maggie Phillips, Jumana Abboud, Alberto Coustasse
Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the most significant public health problems currently facing the U.S. If it is left untreated, the likelihood of sustaining a treatment response decreases. While early identification has been identified as a critical focus in trying to obtain better health outcomes, new drug treatments appear quite promising.

Life Cycle Costing And Food Systems: Concepts, Trends, And Challenges Of Impact Valuation, Katherine Fiedler, Steven Lord, Jason J. Czarnezki
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
Our global food systems create pervasive environmental, social, and health impacts. Impact valuation is an emerging concept that aims to quantify all environmental, social, and health costs of food systems in an attempt to make the true cost of food more transparent. It also is designed to facilitate the transformation of global food systems. The concept of impact valuation is emerging at the same time as, and partly as a response to, calls for the development of legal mechanisms to address environmental, social, and health concerns. Information has long been understood both as a necessary precursor for regulation and as …

What Do We Know About In-Service Police Training? Results Of A Failed Systematic Review, Laura Huey
What Do We Know About In-Service Police Training? Results Of A Failed Systematic Review, Laura Huey
Sociology Publications
To learn more about what the social scientific research literature can tell us about ‘what works’ in the field of in-service police training, the author attempted to conduct a systematic review of the recent published research on this topic (2000-2015). After initially narrowing the search results to 21 studies, the review had to be abandoned because there was an insufficient number of studies on any one topic or training technique. The author reflects on what this failed review means from the standpoint of the possible economic and social costs of potentially ineffective and inefficient in-service training.
Improving Generic Drug Approval At The Fda, Kathleen Craddock
Improving Generic Drug Approval At The Fda, Kathleen Craddock
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
Generic drugs are the store-brand cereal of the drug world. While they lack the vibrant colors of and exciting commercials behind name brands, generics are still effective. Most importantly, for some people, they make the difference between accessing essential treatment and going without. Getting generics to market as quickly as possible means fewer people will cut pills in half or skip doses to save money, which also saves billions of dollars across the U.S. health system. Because a new generic does not offer lifesaving changes for people with rare or complicated diseases, generics lack the “cultural capture of rhetoric about …

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Metformin+Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors Compared To Metformin+Sulfonylureas For Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetes, Christina S. Kwon, Enrique Seoane-Vazquez, Rosa Rodriguez-Monguio
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) typically use several drug treatments during their lifetime. There is a debate about the best second-line therapy after metformin monotherapy failure due to the increasing number of available antidiabetic drugs and the lack of comparative clinical trials of secondary treatment regimens. While prior research compared the cost-effectiveness of two alternative drugs, the literature assessing T2D treatment pathways is scarce. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term cost-effectiveness of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) compared to sulfonylureas (SU) as second-line therapy in combination with metformin in patients with T2D.

Evaluating Impedance Monitoring To Reduce Hospital Readmissions For Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction: An Integrative Review, Abigail Newton
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Congestive Heart Failure (HF) is a chronic progressive cardiac disorder with high mortality rates and is the number one reason for hospital readmission in the United States. More than 5 million Americans live with HF with more than 900,000 new diagnoses annually. The likelihood of developing HF increases with age making it the most common primary diagnosis for patients over age 65. HF has a significant impact on quality of life, with depression being a common comorbid condition. Thoracic impedance monitoring has shown to reduce exacerbations and hospitalizations in patients with HF. This project evaluated the literature related to impedance …

Exploring The Meaning Of Experiential Deaning, Robert Dinerstein, Margaret Martin Barry
Articles in Law Reviews & Other Academic Journals
This article explores the position of associate dean of experiential education in law schools across the country and the central role associate deans play in the changing landscape of legal education. Experiential deans have broad responsibility for overseeing law schools’ experiential education programs. Additional responsibilities differ between institutions, but range from leading efforts to comply with new ABA standards to overseeing the integration of experiential education into the broader curriculum. Analyzing survey data collected from associate experiential deans across the country, the authors find the structure, content, and authority of the position is under-developed. The authors make recommendations on how …
Implementation Costs Of Spiking Versus Rate-Based Anns, Lacie Renee Stiffler
Implementation Costs Of Spiking Versus Rate-Based Anns, Lacie Renee Stiffler
Theses and Dissertations
Artificial neural networks are an effective machine learning technique for a variety of data sets and domains, but exploiting the inherent parallelism in neural networks requires specialized hardware. Typically, computing the output of each neuron requires many multiplications, evaluation of a transcendental activation function, and transfer of its output to a large number of other neurons. These restrictions become more expensive when internal values are represented with increasingly higher data precision. A spiking neural network eliminates the limitations of typical rate-based neural networks by reducing neuron output and synapse weights to one-bit values, eliminating hardware multipliers, and simplifying the activation …

A Bargaining Dynamic Transaction Cost Approach To Understanding Framework Contracts, Juliet P. Kostritsky
A Bargaining Dynamic Transaction Cost Approach To Understanding Framework Contracts, Juliet P. Kostritsky
Faculty Publications
This Article takes a different approach. It draws on the literature of these scholars but suggests that another way to understand the arrangements parties enter into in a variety of settings to purchase or sell goods or to innovate on a product or drug can best be understood in terms of a bargaining dynamic that looks at how the private interests of the parties are turned into joint interests in the agreement reached. It is a mistake to talk about the form of a contract without first understanding the bargaining needs and positions of the parties and how those needs …
Reverse Logistics In Micro Businesses : An Exploratory Study, Mamata Dhakal
Reverse Logistics In Micro Businesses : An Exploratory Study, Mamata Dhakal
Plymouth Business School Theses
There has been growth in managing supply chain processes for enhancing both economic and environmental benefits. Consequently, new dimensions in the supply chain have been added, with one of them being reverse logistics. Reverse logistics deals with the backward flow of goods which help firms to recover and reinstate discarded products, helping firms to realise their economic and environmental initiatives. Reverse logistics has now become a matter of strategic importance, helping to bring sustainable competitive advantage to the firm. This study recognises the inclination of the current research in reverse logistics to focus on larger firms. Hence, this research explores …
