16th Century Shakespeare And 21st Century Students, Sheridan Lynn Steelman
16th Century Shakespeare And 21st Century Students, Sheridan Lynn Steelman
Dissertations
Drawing on examples from the author’s and colleagues classrooms, this dissertation shows how an historical approach to teaching Shakespeare, drawing on primary documents from the period, opens meaningful interpretations, issues and questions for secondary students. Chapter One reviews current pedagogical approaches to teaching Shakespeare, close reading, reader response, and performance to set forth the rationale for teaching Shakespeare using primary documents. Chapter Two highlights ninth grade students studying Romeo and Juliet and includes classroom stories about engagement with documents about gender, sexuality, violence, and potions. Chapter Three describes two general English 11 classes and their successes and challenges with Hamlet …
A Qualitative Study Of Group Therapy Incorporating Rap Music With Inmates, Abigail V. Richards
A Qualitative Study Of Group Therapy Incorporating Rap Music With Inmates, Abigail V. Richards
MSU Graduate Theses
This study aims to explore the lived experiences of inmates who participate in group psychotherapy incorporating elements of rap music. Rap music includes elements such as emotional expression, songwriting, community building, freestyling, and beat, which can be beneficial for individuals experiencing typical symptoms of incarceration such as anxiety, self-discovery, and difficulties regulating emotion. Ten inmates of a Missouri county justice center (50% male) were recruited on a volunteer basis to participate in a five-week psychotherapy group. The study involves psychoeducation, group-drumming, self-expression, and improvisation. Qualitative data were collected through an interview process with participants, including inmates, facilitators and supervisors. Results …

The Role Of Narrative In Performing Schumann And Chopin’S Music, Yu-Wen Chen
The Role Of Narrative In Performing Schumann And Chopin’S Music, Yu-Wen Chen
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Abstract
Recognizing how to present a narrative while performing the music of Schumann and Chopin helps the performer to transmit the spirit of the music and convey expression in the music. In the music-making process, what we cannot discount is that the performer plays a crucial role in conveying musical expression to the listeners, which tremendously affects the quality of the entire musical experience. In this document, I argue that there is a qualitative difference between the ways in which performers should express the central story conveyed in the music of Robert Schumann compared with the story conveyed in the …

Community College Honors Education And Student Outcomes: A Propensity Score Analysis, Jane B. Honeycutt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of honors education to student success by comparing honors-eligible community college students who met requirements to academically matched peers who opted out of honors participation. Honors program participation was defined as completing 12 or more credit hours of honors-level course work. The population for this study included 452 honors-eligible participants with 95 honors participants (HPs) and 357 non-participants (NPs) from a community college in Tennessee. The sampling frame was generated using a five-year participation window from 2008 through 2013. Propensity score matching alleviated the threat to validity for self-selection bias …
Mystery Of The Wax Museum: An Original Film Score For Orchestra And An Analysis Outlining The Evolution Of Film Music Through American Horror Films Of The Early 1930s, Ian Deterling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis illustrates the transitional period between silent films and fully-scored sound films. Connecting the history between producers, directors, and composers reveals how and why film scoring became an accepted practice by the mid-1930s while shedding light on the commonly-overlooked composers whose innovations in these early films paved the way for future film composers. The principle objective of this project is to score selected sequences of Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) by synthesizing contemporary film scoring practices with techniques commonly used in horror films of the 1930s. An accompanying analysis of the score will explain the purpose of each …

Quixote is an evening‐length, memorized, music-theatre-dance piece performed by the interdisciplinary ensemble, HOWL, that Kirsten and DeChiazza founded to continue the vein of collaborative theater-work they began together with Colombine's Paradise Theatre. HOWL features the four members of Sandbox Percussion Quartet, as well as vocal artists Lindsay Kesselman, Hai-Ting Chinn, and Kirsten Sollek. The work was developed through a collaborative process in a series of workshops spanning two years, giving Kirsten and DeChiazza an opportunity to sharpen, deepen, and extend their integrated expressive language. Quixote was commissioned, produced, and developed under the auspices of Peak Performances at Montclair State University …

Gender Revolution Of The Jazz Age: The Source Of Disillusionment In The Works Of F. Scott Fitzgerald And Ernest Hemingway, Mary Killeen
Gender Revolution Of The Jazz Age: The Source Of Disillusionment In The Works Of F. Scott Fitzgerald And Ernest Hemingway, Mary Killeen
All Master's Theses
The Lost Generation was forced to develop their own principles regarding gender identity in an environment of ever-shifting cultural norms, which called into question all of their predetermined ideas on femininity, masculinity, and the ways in which members of the opposite sex should interact with one another. Although much of their writing is set amid and seems to embrace the evolving social culture of the early twentieth-century, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway largely criticize the gender revolution of the 1920s and blame evolving gender roles for the collapse of their generation. Nevertheless, I argue that Fitzgerald’s and Hemingway’s cultural …
