Suicidal Behavior Among U.S. High School Students And Associated Risk Factors, Individual Survey Years 2013, 2015 And Trend Analysis From 1991 To 2015, Maithili Bhat

Public Health Theses

INTRODUCTION: Suicidal behavior is a serious public health problem among adolescents in the United States (U.S). It is a complex phenomenon and process that may originate with suicidal thoughts and evolve over time into plans or attempts, or can more rarely be an impulsive act. A suicidal attempt may result in injury, disability or death. As adolescents are in a transitional period between childhood and adulthood, they are more vulnerable to adverse effects from health behaviors that put them at higher risk for suicidal behavior. The goal of this research was to examine high-risk health behaviors and assess their associations …

Food Security Status, Dietary Behaviors And Health Outcomes In Cambodian Americans With Depression And At High-Risk For Diabetes, Living In New England, Chelsey Hahn

Master's Theses

Background:

Refugee survivors of starvation and trauma during the Khmer Rouge rule of Cambodia suffer myriad poor health outcomes, 30 years after the genocide. Having high rates of food insecurity, depression, and the highest rate of type 2 diabetes mellitus for an Asian subgroup complicates nutritional health outcomes.

Objectives:

(1) To document household food insecurity of Cambodian Americans who were alive during the Pol Pot era, with depression and elevated diabetes risk in New England; (2) To document the dietary behaviors of Cambodian Americans; and (3) To explore preliminary associations between household food insecurity, dietary behaviors and diabetes risk …

Power To The Period: The Role Of Menstruation In Nepal’S Formal Workplace, Johannah Mitchell Apr 2017

Power To The Period: The Role Of Menstruation In Nepal’S Formal Workplace, Johannah Mitchell

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Within the greater context of Nepal, menstruation is a topic that has long-held significance as a taboo topic due to religious and cultural connotations. However, over the past five years, there has been a push in Nepali schools to acknowledge menstruation and menstrual hygiene management as legitimate aspects of health curriculums. This is a great step forward for the country, but also begs the question of whether this educational movement is being recognized in other areas of society, such as the formal workplace. Through discussion with various individuals- from government officers to healthcare employees- this research examines attitudes towards menstruation, …

Naloxone Administration Route In Opioid Overdose: A Review Of Vermont Ems Data, Alden York Sacco Mph, Chris Lamonda Mph, Michael O'Keefe, Daniel Wolfson Md, Mario Trabulsy Md

Master of Public Health Culminating Projects

Objective: Emergency Medical System (EMS) personnel administer the direct opioid antagonist naloxone in cases of opioid overdose via intramuscular (IM), intravenous (IV), subcutaneous (SQ), intraosseous (IO), or intranasal (IN) routes. Some early studies suggest that the intranasal route of administration is of similar effectiveness to injectable routes. The main objective of our study was to compare the efficacy of intravenous and intraosseous (IV/IO) routes of naloxone administration to the intranasal (IN) route in suspected opioid overdoses in Vermont.

Methods: We reviewed retrospective data from Vermont EMS Statewide Incident Reporting Network (SIREN) between April 2014 and August 2016. We included all …

The Role Of Msm Status, Race, And Marijuana Use In Hiv Risk Among Adult Males In The Columbus, Oh Region, Andrea M. Hager

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV, is a life-long illness that affects millions across the globe. Young adult males, especially men who have sex with men (MSM), are at significant risk for the virus. This project examined a hypothesized association between marijuana use and HIV infection, comorbidity of HIV and other STIs, and potentially confounding variables in a sample of men tested for HIV in Columbus, Ohio.

The sample included a total of 898 non-Hispanic/Latino males (294 White, 604 Black/African-American, non-Hispanic/Latino males aged 18 to 74 years. All were tested for HIV between February 2013 and April 2013 by Columbus (Ohio) …

Kuwait : Obesity, Sabrina Difiori Jan 2017

Kuwait : Obesity, Sabrina Difiori

Global Public Health

The country of Kuwait is known for their extremely high prevalence of obesity. It is a major public health issue for people of both genders. For men, the prevalence for obesity is 36 percent and 48 percent for women. A type of intervention that is often used to fix this problem is stomach stapling: the process of making the stomach smaller to reduce the amount of food intake. If children can start becoming more educated about this issue early on in their lifetime, the prevalence of obesity might not be so high in years to come.

Do Mother And Father Know Best?: California's Policies On Parental Consent For Sex Education, Jennifer Lehr Jan 2017

Do Mother And Father Know Best?: California's Policies On Parental Consent For Sex Education, Jennifer Lehr

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis combines the disciplines of public policy analysis and anthropology to consider parental consent policies for sex education in California. After providing historical, political, and cultural context for sex education and the parental consent function, the thesis considers (1) the factors that inform parental perspectives on sex education, (2) if parents should be able to opt their children out of sex education, and (3) the discrepancy between the actual policies regarding parental consent and the way they are implemented. The thesis concludes with policy recommendations for improving the implementation of current California sex education policies.

Filling The Gap In Obesity Prevention: Implementation Of The General’S Activity Program (Gap) In Carroll County, Kentucky, Brent Emerson Jan 2017

Filling The Gap In Obesity Prevention: Implementation Of The General’S Activity Program (Gap) In Carroll County, Kentucky, Brent Emerson

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

As obesity rates continue to rise, there is a significant need for public health programs that are able to effectively increase physical activity at the community level. Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of negative health outcomes associated with obesity including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of cancer while also strengthening muscles, improving mental health and mood, and increasing average life expectancy. Previous research has supported that one way to increase physical activity at the community level is through social marketing of state and local parks. Through the promotion of parks, community residents are able …

Three Perspectives On Social Equity And Public Health Emergency Preparedness And Response Policy, Lucila M. Zamboni Jan 2017

Three Perspectives On Social Equity And Public Health Emergency Preparedness And Response Policy, Lucila M. Zamboni

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the past 20 years, large-scale disasters have generated economic loss of $660 billion in the United States. Research has identified that low income individuals and economically vulnerable communities are at heightened risk and often experience disadvantages in access to public services during emergencies. Public administration literature has claimed that social equity should be included as a consideration together with economic and efficiency principles when formulating and implementing public policy. Yet there has been limited empirical research that follows this premise. The three studies that comprise this dissertation are guided by one overarching research question: which socioeconomic characteristics at the …

A Population-Based Survival Analysis Of Mesothelioma And Smoking In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Kentucky, Peter Van Wie Jan 2017

A Population-Based Survival Analysis Of Mesothelioma And Smoking In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Kentucky, Peter Van Wie

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive cancers in the United States and around the world, with a grim 5-year survival rate of only 8%. After diagnosis there is little that can be done to stop the progression of the disease. Smoking has been negatively associated with mesothelioma survival. This may be due to several factors including increased oxidative stress or sequestration of tobacco-related carcinogenic compounds by asbestos fibers trapped in the lung. This study investigated the association between smoking and mesothelioma survival in the Kentucky population. It examines the risk of living in the low socioeconomic region of Appalachian …

Hygiene Beliefs, Attitudes, And Practices Of Suya Producers In Nigeria, Vivian Iwar Jan 2017

Hygiene Beliefs, Attitudes, And Practices Of Suya Producers In Nigeria, Vivian Iwar

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The street food sector continues to grow in Nigeria in a largely unregulated environment. The lack of regulation poses a significant public health risk for consuming unsafe street foods such as suya. Quantitative research has revealed high levels of microbiological contamination of suya, despite qualitative findings that suggest that food handlers are knowledgeable about safe food handling practices. This discrepancy reveals a gap in understanding about what influences safe food handling practices besides knowledge. This qualitative study was therefore designed to gain a deeper understanding of the beliefs and attitudes that influence hygienic practices among suya producers. Guided by the …

Pathopoiesis Mechanism Of Smoking And Shared Genes In Pancreatic Cancer, Ulysses Labilles Jan 2017

Pathopoiesis Mechanism Of Smoking And Shared Genes In Pancreatic Cancer, Ulysses Labilles

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Pancreatic cancer (PC) remains a significant, unresolved issue because of its complex genetic blueprint and lack of reliable detection markers. The purpose of this study was to examine the possible correlation between tobacco use, gender, and age in the etiopathogenesis of PC and other cancer types with a shared-gene association (CTSG-A). The unified paradigm of cancer causation was used to understand the pathopoiesis mechanism of smoking and shared genes in PC. A cross-sectional study was performed using secondary data from the cancer survivorship module of the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. Results of ordinal logistic regression analyses indicated …
