Sustainability And Spread Of Community-Based Initiatives: A Case Study Of Community Cares, A Children’S Hospital’S 16 Year Effort To Serve Its Community, Robert F. Austin, Patricia Coleman, Stephanie Meads, Angelo P. Giardino

Journal of Family Strengths

The sustainability and spread of innovations is often elusive, presenting continuous challenges to clinicians and healthcare leaders. Somewhere between 33 - 70% of all innovations are reportedly not sustained, and even fewer are spread beyond the original team, or to other units within an organization. In plain language, sustainability is defined as locking in progress, while continually building upon that foundation, while spread is the exchange of knowledge and experience to others beyond the original implementing team. The literature supports the concept that sustainability is both multi-dimensional and multi-factorial and has several characteristics and pre-conditions. Tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations in the …

Developing A New College Course: A Journey Using Applied Critical And Creative Thinking Towards Philosophy, Decision Making, And Possibilities, Myra W. Mcwethy

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In recent years, certain events made me question the lack of training and preparation that many young adults have as they unsteadily exit high school (and even college) unable, and sometimes unwilling, to make real life/real world decisions.

This paper explores my journey through a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts - Boston in Critical and Creative Thinking, ending with a fully realized template for a brand new college 100/200 level course, tentatively titled: Philosophy: Making Better Decisions.

I start with the specific impetus that set me on my path: a “rotten decision” made by three co-workers that collided …

Improvements To Micro-Contact Performance And Reliability, Tod V. Laurvick Dec 2016

Improvements To Micro-Contact Performance And Reliability, Tod V. Laurvick

Theses and Dissertations

Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) based devices, and specifically microswitches, continue to offer many advantages over competing technologies. To realize the benefits of micro-switches, improvements must be made to address performance and reliability shortfalls which have long been an issue with this application. To improve the performance of these devices, the micro-contacts used in this technology must be understood to allow for design improvements, and offer a means for testing to validate this technology and determine when such improvements are ready for operational environments. To build devices which are more robust and capable of continued operation after billions of cycles requires that …

Burnout In Radiation Therapy: Examining The Six Leading Influences, Gina C. Passmore Dec 2016

Burnout In Radiation Therapy: Examining The Six Leading Influences, Gina C. Passmore

All Theses And Dissertations

Recent studies are highlighting the dangers of burnout amongst healthcare workers, including radiation therapists. Since burnout is associated with an increase in medical errors (Sanchez-Reilly, 2013), it affects both the well-being of the patient and patient satisfaction scores, which are important to a hospital’s reputation. Burnout has a positive correlation with job dissatisfaction and increased employee turnover, making it both a financial and quality issue. Organizations acknowledge that burnout leads to unhappy employees, and unhappy employees are less likely to be engaged in their work, thereby not producing the best “products” (Sehlen, 2009). By examining which components seem to be …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Transgender Health Resource Bundle, Lovejeet Kaur Dec 2016

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Transgender Health Resource Bundle, Lovejeet Kaur

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Transgender populations experience disproportionate social and health disparities that can negatively impact quality of life. Healthcare barriers due to gender based discrimination and lack of medical insurance and culturally competent providers contribute to low levels of access to preventative health care screenings, resulting in sub-optimal health outcomes. The unique health circumstances of transgender individuals have been understudied in the literature. As a result clinicians are often under-informed of their specific health maintenance needs and screening guidelines. To help address this disparity, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student at the University of San Francisco facilitated the collaborative assessment, development, implementation …

Nursing Student Work-Study Internship: Partnering To Bridge The Education-To-Practice Gap, Jonalyn M. Wallace

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Discussed for decades, the need for transitional experiences bridging educational and practice settings gained momentum in the mid-1970s with the release of Kramer’s groundbreaking book Reality Shock: Why Nurses Leave Nursing. Nursing student internship programs were developed in the 1970s as one effort to address this issue. The Northern California Region of Kaiser Permanente partners with five universities to conduct the Nursing Student Work-Study Internship Program (WSP). The program provides senior level nursing students with a paid internship in clinical practice settings, working under the supervision of RN preceptors. The aim of the program is to improve the …

Reducing Mortality From Severe Sepsis And Septic Shock: A Macro System Approach, Scott D. Baker Dec 2016

Reducing Mortality From Severe Sepsis And Septic Shock: A Macro System Approach, Scott D. Baker

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Healthcare organizations must be able to provide quality patient care from arrival to disposition that is both expedient and safe. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality ranks septicemia as the number one most expensive condition treated in U.S. hospitals, resulting in aggregate costs of $20.3 billion or 5.2% of the total aggregate cost for all hospitalizations. Starting October 2015, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services began tying financial reimbursement to improvement of sepsis outcomes. For success to be achieved, organizations should partner with prehospital providers to improve sepsis care, similar to partnerships which have historically improved acute myocardial …

The first PDSA cycle with Group A revealed 21% were confident in their knowledge with the traditional …

The Implementation Of 311 Technology In Local Government And The Impact On Citizen-Initiated Contacting, Emefa Sewordor Dec 2016

The Implementation Of 311 Technology In Local Government And The Impact On Citizen-Initiated Contacting, Emefa Sewordor

Public Management and Policy Dissertations

Prior studies have documented the expanded role of 311 non-emergency systems in public participation, public management and performance management in local governments. Three-one-one began as a simple telephone-based system for requesting non-emergency services and now plays an important role in local governments. Yet, there are very few insights into the impact of 311 systems on their public users, even as local governments increasingly turn to 311 as a public engagement tool, using it to facilitate citizen-initiated contacts. This dissertation explores two research questions. First, how has 311 technology affected citizen behavior? Second, has the introduction of a 311 system produced …

A Narrative Of Kingdom Culture, Verlyne Starr, M.A. Dec 2016

A Narrative Of Kingdom Culture, Verlyne Starr, M.A.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to encourage Christian educators to use narrative as a pedagogical strategy to enhance the knowledge of and authenticate the values of the kingdom of God. Effective biblical narrative illustrates and emphasizes heaven’s culture, or kingdom culture, in contrast to earthly cultural norms. Narrative effectively suspends disbelief and doubt in the mind of the listener and can facilitate sharing the distinctive Seventh-day Adventist biblical worldview (biblical worldview). Stories help the audience make sense of complex concepts and discover unknown facts and perspectives. The communication of cultural norms through stories has normative ramifications on the listener’s …

The Effects Of Feedback Valence On Work Performance, Learning And Attitudes: Looking At Valence, Trend And Consistency Together, Dina Leheta Dec 2016

The Effects Of Feedback Valence On Work Performance, Learning And Attitudes: Looking At Valence, Trend And Consistency Together, Dina Leheta

Managerial Sciences Dissertations

One important aspect of performance feedback that was found to have significant effects on work outcomes is feedback valence. However, the literature is inconclusive about which valence of feedback, positive or negative, is better for outcomes. To help solve this conundrum, this dissertation argues that it is important to look not just at the valence of external feedback but also the pattern of such feedback valence over time when studying the effects of feedback on important work outcomes.

Consequently, it identifies two main dimensions of feedback valence pattern in line with previous literature: trend (so whether valence is on average …

A quota sampling procedure was used to recruit 298 academicians - 186 from public universities and 112 from private universities. Significant correlations were obtained between transformational and transactional leadership style and organisational learning capacity dimensions. However, the moderating effect of organisational culture in the relationship between leadership styles and organisational learning capacity was not reported. Lastly, …

The Contribution Of Community-Based Health Planning And Services (Chps) To Community Sustainability And Health In The Upper West Region Of Ghana, Hannah M. Woods Dec 2016

The Contribution Of Community-Based Health Planning And Services (Chps) To Community Sustainability And Health In The Upper West Region Of Ghana, Hannah M. Woods

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Ghana introduced Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) to improve poor health in rural areas. Research in the Upper West Region (UWR) has found poor health is related to degrading social fabric. Recent research suggests the existence of health services in rural, developed contexts increases community sustainability and can be understood through the capitals framework. This study applies the framework to understand the contribution of CHPS to community sustainability and health in the UWR. The region lacks reliable ambulance services; in response, communities have adopted Community-initiated Emergency Transport Services (CETS). The study uses the existence of CETS as a measure …

Engaging With Tradition? How History Shapes Engagement With Local Communities In Universities In England And Ontario, Canada, Emma Sabzalieva Dec 2016

Engaging With Tradition? How History Shapes Engagement With Local Communities In Universities In England And Ontario, Canada, Emma Sabzalieva

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

The impetus for universities to engage – to reach out, share, and exchange knowledge – with the communities around them is not a new phenomenon, but one that has gathered salience and speed in recent years (Watson, 2007; Hall, 2009; Davis, 2016). University engagement takes place in a range of dimensions within the global-national-regional-local spectrum (Benneworth et al, 2009; Goddard, 2009). This comparative study of six public universities in England and Ontario, Canada focuses on engagement with local communities. By analysing both institutional histories and universities’ contemporary strategic plans, the study shows that understanding universities’ foundations offers important insights into …

Key Challenges For Establishing Cio Position In The Public Sector Of Ldcs: A Case Of Bangladesh, Bashir Hussain, Ahmed Imran, Tim Turner Dec 2016

Key Challenges For Establishing Cio Position In The Public Sector Of Ldcs: A Case Of Bangladesh, Bashir Hussain, Ahmed Imran, Tim Turner

27th Australasian Conference on Information Systems

Abstract: Unprecedented growth of information and communications technology (ICT), calls for new public management, pressure from donors, citizen demand, and, above all, the government’s “Digital Bangladesh” political pledge provide impetus for integrating ICT in the public sector of Bangladesh. Despite efforts, the country cannot make sufficient progress in ICT due to the lack of IT structure led by a chief information officer (CIO) or similar leadership position. Although the literature describes various aspects of CIO including role effectiveness, competencies and structural relationship, it does not offer any prescriptive measure on how the CIO position should be established. Drawing on institutional …

Course Design Principles To Support The Learning Of Complex Information Infrastructures, Corina Raduescu, Jenny Leonard, Catherine Hardy Dec 2016

Course Design Principles To Support The Learning Of Complex Information Infrastructures, Corina Raduescu, Jenny Leonard, Catherine Hardy

27th Australasian Conference on Information Systems

Abstract: This paper presents an integrated, learning-centred course design for studying the complex, rapidly changing information infrastructures underpinning organisations and society. Students need to develop an agile, critical mindset in order to influence and be influenced by these socio-technical systems in ways which enhance information management, control and innovation. There are several challenges to developing this mindset. Students and technology vendors often expect technical training and current educational materials reinforce this approach. A silo-based structure to most degrees exacerbates the problem. The complexity of context and rapidity of change often get lost in the mix. This paper addresses these problems …

Leadership In Small U.S. Industrial Machining And Fabricating Companies, Christopher Gabers Dec 2016

Leadership In Small U.S. Industrial Machining And Fabricating Companies, Christopher Gabers

Business Administration Dissertations

Given the continuous advances with globalization and overall competition, small U.S. machining and fabrication companies (manufacturing) are required to constantly maintain a competitive advantage to stay relevant (Avolio, 2004; Cascio 1995). To help maintain that competitive advantage, leadership has been extensively researched for many years within multiple segments of the U.S. economy; however, specific focus has been neglected when it comes to transactional and transformational leadership styles within small U.S. industrial machining and fabricating companies.

The focus of this research centers on three small industrial machining and fabricating businesses in the manufacturing sector. Distributing the multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) this …
