Jesus And The World Of Grace, 1968-2016: An Idiosyncratic Theological Memoir, William L. Portier
Jesus And The World Of Grace, 1968-2016: An Idiosyncratic Theological Memoir, William L. Portier
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This article offers an impressionistic look back over the past five decades, from 1968 to 2016, in Catholic theology in the United States. At the heart of this story are Christology, the world of grace, and their relationship. This memoir unfolds in three parts: “Running on Empty, 1968–1980”; “Jesus and the World of Grace, 1980–2016”; “Can Liberal Catholics Come Back?” It identifies the most neuralgic question left to us from this period: How is Christ related to the world of grace?
The Role Of The Moral Theologian In The Church: A Proposal In Light Of Amoris Laetitia, Conor M. Kelly
The Role Of The Moral Theologian In The Church: A Proposal In Light Of Amoris Laetitia, Conor M. Kelly
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia recast pastoral decisions in terms of conscience and discernment and asked moral theology to do the same. Such a request invites reforms for moral theology, requiring a shift from the traditional role of the moral theologian as an external judge to a more personalist role as a counselor for conscience. This change entails prioritizing the process of discernment ahead of the definition of rules, specifying the place of the ideal in Catholic morality, and attending to the ethics of ordinary life.

The Legal Revolution Against The Place Of Religion: The Case Of Trinity Western University Law School, Barry W. Bussey
The Legal Revolution Against The Place Of Religion: The Case Of Trinity Western University Law School, Barry W. Bussey
BYU Law Review
The special legal status of religion and religious freedom in liberal democracies has become an issue of controversy among legal academics and lawyers. There is a growing argument that religion is not special and that the law should be amended to reflect that fact. This Article argues that religion is special. It is special because of the historical, practical, and philosophical realities of liberal democracies. Religious freedom is a foundational principle that was instrumental in creating the modern liberal democratic state. To remove religion from its current legal station would be a revolution that would put liberal democracy in a …
Forming Catholic School Principals As Leaders Of The New Evangelization, David D. Spesia
Forming Catholic School Principals As Leaders Of The New Evangelization, David D. Spesia
Journal of Catholic Education
Pope Francis’ call for a missionary transformation of the Church has radical implications for Catholic schools and their educational leaders. The Church expects her elementary school principals to serve not only as instructional leaders and ecclesial ministers, but also as agents of the New Evangelization. Given this focus on the New Evangelization as a fundamental conceptual framework for the mission of Catholic schools, it is essential to understand the roots and foundations of this vision as it pertains to the unique role played by Catholic school principals. This article also highlights insights from leading Catholic evangelizers and concludes with recommendations …

Compromise Or Quit Medical Practice: Is There Another Option For Catholic Health Care Professionals, John Morris
Compromise Or Quit Medical Practice: Is There Another Option For Catholic Health Care Professionals, John Morris
Conference on Philosophy and Theology
More and more, medical practitioners are being told that they must either compromise their beliefs and provide whatever services patients demand or they should quit medical practice. This paper will explore other options that would offer a more just and respectful solution for our pluralistic society.
Against Circumspection: Judges, Religious Symbols, And Signs Of Moral Independence, Benjamin Berger
Against Circumspection: Judges, Religious Symbols, And Signs Of Moral Independence, Benjamin Berger
Benjamin L. Berger
This chapter questions the interpretation of religious signs and symbols— and the interpretive possibilities that emerge when we demand more from one another in thinking about such symbols— by examining the question of judges and religious dress in the particular context of the judge’s role as wielding the coercive force of the state through the exercise of criminal punishment. I advance the argument that recent debates have proceeded on a misleadingly simplistic approach to understanding the meaning of signs of religious belonging and identity in this setting and that, with this, we miss an opportunity for a deeper …
Stanley Hauerwas’S Influence On Catholic Moral Theology, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Stanley Hauerwas’S Influence On Catholic Moral Theology, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Jana M. Bennett
One might begin considering the reception of Stanley Hauerwas’s work in Catholic moral theology by asking: why did both Commonweal and First Things opt to publish reviews of Hauerwas’s memoir Hannah’s Child? What is it about Hauerwas’s theological discussion of his own work that engages an educated Catholic audience of magazines putatively representing both ends of the spectrum? It is not only that both journals actively seek engagement with Protestant voices; nor is it only that Hauerwas has a degree of renown, thanks to Time magazine. It is also exactly what Peter Steinfels alludes to in his review, that Hauerwas …
