When animals don’t have enough food, they have to “choose” between “spending” their limited energy on themselves or on their offspring. Biologists think that reptiles can make this choice quickly in response to different environments. But, it can be hard to study these choices because it is hard to convert between, for example, the number of eggs laid and the speed of healing a wound. By using stable isotope chemistry, we can collect more detailed and comparable information about how lizards and other animals spend their limited resources than with any other method. The purpose of this study was to determine the basic reproductive biology and seasonality of the Patagonian fjord coral Desmophyllum dianthus. Desmophyllum dianthus is a deep-sea solitary scleractinian found throughout the world’s oceans and an important benthic habitat builder. The Chilean Patagonian fjords are the only known location where this species occurs >50 m and thus are the only place to collect samples efficiently, effectively and economically. Interactions between animals and their environment are fundamental to ecological research. Field studies of coyote (Canis latrans) reproductive performance suggest mean litter size changes in response to prey abundance. However, this relationship has been assessed primarily by using carcasses collected from trappers. The objective of this study was to assess whether nutritional manipulation prior to mating affected reproduction in adult female coyotes. We examined the effects of caloric restriction during the 7 months prior to estrus on the reproductive rates of 11 captive female coyotes and the subsequent initial survival of pups through two reproductive cycles.
