Admission Handoff Between Emergency Department And Inpatient Units, Amanda A. Briones Dec 2016

Admission Handoff Between Emergency Department And Inpatient Units, Amanda A. Briones

Master's Projects and Capstones

When admitting a patient from the emergency department (ED) to an inpatient unit, a handoff report is conducted. There are many ways the ED nurse can go about delivering this report to the inpatient or floor nurse. Each ED nurse tends to this task in their own way, providing the information they deem important. Due to the absence of standardization, handoff reports have the ability to lack important information regarding the patient and can even lead to compromising the safety of the patient.

The purpose of this project was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current handover process of …

Improving Preadmission Testing Nurses' Knowledge Of Aortic Stenosis And Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, Alberta Lynn Canale

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

The purpose of this Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) project was to reduce gaps in nursing knowledge through staff education. Guided by the CNL theme of educator and information manager, the goals were to increase PreAdmission Testing (PAT) nurses’ knowledge of severe/critical aortic stenosis (AS), transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure and patient selection, and satisfaction with knowledge by 10%. Rapid growth of the TAVR program has contributed to a gap in nursing knowledge leading to inconsistent patient care and education. An educational program was developed and spread through a series of Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles. Pre- and post- implementation surveys were …

Recovery-Oriented Care And Inpatient Psychiatric Nursing Practice, Julia M. Mclaughlin Dec 2016

Recovery-Oriented Care And Inpatient Psychiatric Nursing Practice, Julia M. Mclaughlin

Master's Projects and Capstones

For the past 15 years, major organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and U.S. federal government have been committed to shifting mental health services from the medical model of care to the recovery-oriented model of care (Moller & McLoughlin, 2013). However, not all identified recovery-oriented practices have been fully implemented throughout mental health services, specifically in acute care settings. In 2015, San Mateo Medical Center’s acute psychiatric nursing staff completed McLoughlin’s (2005) Recovery Self-Assessment- Registered Nurse (RSA-RN). Data showed that 34% of nursing staff did not believe that the nurses …

An Apn-Led Copd Discharge Education Program To Decrease 30-Day Readmission Rates, Moira Elizabeth Kendra

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

The purpose of this project was to implement an APN-led COPD discharge education program to decrease 30-day readmission rates. This Doctorate of Nursing (DNP) project combined strategies obtained in the literature search and blended these into a cutting-edge and state-of-the-art discharge education program at a major medical center. The significance of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) readmission rates include financial implications, a large number of Medicare patients who return to the hospital within 30 days, poor quality of patient care, and poorly coordinated discharge processes. An APN-led transitional care COPD education discharge plan was implemented on the pulmonary floor at …

Mentoring Urban Youth Toward A Nursing Career, Sarah Mcculloch

Master of Arts/Science in Nursing Scholarly Projects

The nursing profession is dedicated to the promotion of wellbeing for all; however, significant disparities exist in patient populations who are underrepresented in the nursing workforce. The literature reports that increasing diversity in the nursing workforce can lead to improved patient outcomes, increased range of services, a greater understanding of patients’ illness and a more holistic approach to wellbeing for all. Nurses who reflect the communities they serve, support patients to make better healthcare decisions based on a better understanding of their patients life experiences, family dynamics and perspectives of their patient/client population. These aforementioned qualities have the potential to …

The Lived Experience Of Clinical Nurse Experts Transitioning To The Role Of Novice Educators, Kimberley Ann Tucker Dec 2016

The Lived Experience Of Clinical Nurse Experts Transitioning To The Role Of Novice Educators, Kimberley Ann Tucker

Dissertations

The national nursing shortage is compounded by a critical shortage of nursing faculty. Despite a growing interest in nursing, thousands of qualified applicants are turned away primarily due to lack of faculty to teach. The recruitment of expert nurses from clinical practice is one strategy being utilized by many colleges and universities to fill faculty vacancies. Many novice educators enter academia lacking formal preparation in teaching and learning; orientation and mentoring programs vary greatly between institutions, making the transition challenging. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to gain insight into the experiences of clinical nurse experts transitioning to …

The Meaning Of Nursing Education As Described By Students With Learning Disabilities, Jacqueline Lee Reep-Jarmin Dec 2016

The Meaning Of Nursing Education As Described By Students With Learning Disabilities, Jacqueline Lee Reep-Jarmin

Theses and Dissertations

The numbers of students with learning disabilities (LD) in post-secondary education settings is rising (National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), 2016). The Americans with Disabilities Act, Amendments Act was passed in 2008, since that time little research has been done to reflect any impact of the original ADA (1990) being amended. Research is needed about the experiences of students with learning disabilities in higher education, and more specifically nursing education. The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the lived experience of nursing education from the perspective of students with learning disabilities, and delineate the essence of …

Background:

The focus on traditional acute, hospital-based health care is being replaced with a new paradigm aimed at providing primary care, care of populations, and care across transitions and providers. As changes unfold, nursing education is challenged to prepare graduates who can effectively function in new healthcare environments of the 21st century. In response, the Jefferson College of Nursing (JCN) embarked on the ambitious task of designing a new 21st century baccalaureate nursing curriculum over a 13-month period. Although a 13-month turnaround time for curriculum design is unprecedented, what is most unique about JCN’s initiative is that it began with …

Moral Distress: Cowardly Lion To Courageous Action, Frances Johnson 2362973

Faculty Works

Moral distress is a key issue in the healthcare work environment. This course will explore situations in which health care providers may find themselves that result in moral distress; situations can arise from patients, their families, co-workers, or the organization. Providing quality, evidence based practice is many times limited to doing what is allowed per protocols or payors, and not always what is best for that given situation. Included in this presentation are ways to affirm what is felt, assess sources of distress, contemplate risks and benefits of action, and prepare for action.

Nurses Engagement In End-Of-Life Discussions With Dying Patients And Their Families, Frances Gomes Marthone

Nursing Dissertations (PhD)

ABSTRACT

NURSE ENGAGEMENT IN END-OF-LIFE DISCUSSIONS

WITH DYING PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES

by

FRANCES GOMES MARTHONE

Nurse engagement in end-of-life (EOL) conversations with terminally ill patients and their families is a crucial part of EOL care. However, research about nurses’ attitudes about care of dying patients, their preparation to provide that care, and their perceived self-efficacy in engaging in EOL discussions is limited. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to a) assess medical-surgical nurses’ self-efficacy for conducting EOL discussions and b) examine the relationships between mastery of experiences (experiences with death and dying, nursing education, years in specialty …

Heteronormative Labour: Conflicting Accountability Structures Among Men In Nursing, Marci D. Cottingham, Austin Johnson, Tiffany Taylor Aug 2016

Heteronormative Labour: Conflicting Accountability Structures Among Men In Nursing, Marci D. Cottingham, Austin Johnson, Tiffany Taylor

Austin Johnson

Drawing on interview and diary data from 40 men in nursing in the US, the current study advances our theoretical understanding of how heteronormativity and masculinity intersect to shape men's performance of carework. Men in nursing are constrained by their accountability to stereotypes that they are gay and/or hypersexual, challenging their work in the feminized profession of nursing. As heteronormativity is embedded in the institution of health care, men nurses of all sexualities must perform additional labour on the job to reconcile their conflicting accountability to heteronormative stereotypes and occupational standards of care. We conceptualize this additional labour as heteronormative …

Effects Of Pediatric Emergence Delirium Education On Analgesic Administration By Pacu Nurses, Melinda C. Nwanganga Aug 2016

Effects Of Pediatric Emergence Delirium Education On Analgesic Administration By Pacu Nurses, Melinda C. Nwanganga

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Emergence delirium (ED) is a behavioral disturbance as a result of general anesthesia that commonly occurs in pediatric patients. Adverse effects of ED lead to a complicated recovery from anesthesia due to the risk of self-inflicted injury of patients, the disturbance of surgical incisions, the development of postoperative maladaptive behaviors, and the increased use of sedatives and analgesics resulting in prolonged recovery time and delayed discharge from the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Due to the multiple ramifications of ED, appropriate care is needed to promote a safe recovery from anesthesia and an optimum perioperative experience for these patients. As PACU …
