A Survey Of Social Network Forensics, Umit Karabiyik, Muhammed Abdullah Canbaz, Ahmet Aksoy, Tayfun Tuna, Esra Akbas, Bilal Gonen, Ramazan S. Aygun
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Social networks in any form, specifically online social networks (OSNs), are becoming a part of our everyday life in this new millennium especially with the advanced and simple communication technologies through easily accessible devices such as smartphones and tablets. The data generated through the use of these technologies need to be analyzed for forensic purposes when criminal and terrorist activities are involved. In order to deal with the forensic implications of social networks, current research on both digital forensics and social networks need to be incorporated and understood. This will help digital forensics investigators to predict, detect and even prevent …
Security Districts In New Orleans, Kara Chin, Emily Siegel
Security Districts In New Orleans, Kara Chin, Emily Siegel
Capstones
We did an investigative study of security districts in New Orleans. For nearly 20 years, neighborhoods in the city’s wealthier sections have voted to impose higher taxes only on themselves for additional security that benefits their own neighborhoods. These added patrols supplement the city’s often-criticized police. Last year, security districts raised nearly $6 million in additional revenue that isn’t shared with the rest of the city. No other major city has implemented a publicly funded law enforcement system that allows voters to funnel tax dollars for additional security that is not shared with the city at large.
State Failure In Venezuela, Marcus Littman
State Failure In Venezuela, Marcus Littman
Master's Theses
The role of the state is to provide political goods such as security and an environment conducive to economic growth. The Venezuelan state is failing to provide both security and conditions capable of producing economic growth. The government has exacerbated both by enacting failed policies. I measure the economic crisis in Venezuela based on the rates of inflation, falling foreign currency reserves, the food and medical supply shortage, falling government spending, and negative GDP growth. I measure the security crisis based on the escalating rate of kidnapping, human trafficking, drug sales, smuggling, theft, gun distribution, and homicide. In this thesis, …

Six Of Crows #2: Crooked Kingdom, Cynthia Frazier
Children's Book and Media Review
Crooked Kingdom, the second in the Six of Crows duology, continues the story of Kaz and his gang of misfits. After being cheated out of the reward money for accomplishing a dangerous mission, Inej is kidnapped and held captive by the heartless and scheming Van Eck. If they give into the demands and trade Kuwai for Inej, Grisha everywhere would be in peril and their gifts exploited by wealthy men and corrupt governments. Kaz comes up with an intricate plan to trick Van Eck into relinquishing Inej. An elaborate chess game ensues, one step forward for the good guys and …

Policing Postsecondary Education: University Police Legitimacy And Fear Of Crime On Campus, Christina N. Barker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Assessing the perceptions that students have of the university police officers charged with ensuring student safety is important to maintaining the overall safety of the campus. The current study sought to assess the relationship between student perceptions of university police and the fear of crime felt by students while on campus. Data collection was conducted through a survey methodology using a convenient sample of students in which a self-report survey was sent to the university email addresses of all students enrolled in a southeastern university (n=260). Through the employment of a scale developed to assess the perceptions of university police …
Informal Security Groups As Social Non-Movement In Indonesia: Case Of Buru Jejak In Central Lombok, Yogi Setya Permana
Informal Security Groups As Social Non-Movement In Indonesia: Case Of Buru Jejak In Central Lombok, Yogi Setya Permana
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
This essay discusses vigilante groups in relation to access for rights to security, particularly in Central Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara Province. Vigilante groups are defined as 'informal security groups' to distinguish them from formal security entities owned by the state such as the police and military. I propose an alternative interpretation toward the existence of informal security groups that is different from mainstream explanation. Most of the literatures have a strong tendency to categorize informal security groups merely as antagonist actors and a predatory element in the process of democratization in Indonesia. By referencing Asef Bayat’s notion of social …

Crime And Culture : A Thematic Reading Of Sherlock Holmes And His Adaptations., Britney Broyles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes character and stories into the television shows Sherlock and Elementary on air today. The project will consider three central questions: 1) Why is this Victorian detective hero still popular in the twenty-first century and what has remained constant and still resonates with modern audiences? 2) Both television shows transport Holmes in time by setting their narratives in the present day; therefore, what has been changed in this process of adaptation? 3) How do these changes represent shifts in our cultural thinking about important aspects of humanistic inquiry? The …
A Review Of "Defining Deviance Down" And How Trump Could Possibly Be Redefining Hate Crime, Davis Wadley
A Review Of "Defining Deviance Down" And How Trump Could Possibly Be Redefining Hate Crime, Davis Wadley
Sociology Class Publications
The purpose of this research paper is to summarize and critique Daniel Moynihan's essay entitled Defining Deviancy Down and then to evaluate whether Donald Trump has helped normalize, increase, or change hate crime in America. This will be achieved by examining the Southern Poverty Law Center’s report on hate crime data since the 2016 election. The hope is to find a connection between Moynihan's normalization redefinition and how Trump’s nomination has affected Americans, specifically in the context of hate crime.
Multivariate Analysis Of Crime Data Using Spatial Outlier Detection Algorithm, Alok Kumar Singh
Multivariate Analysis Of Crime Data Using Spatial Outlier Detection Algorithm, Alok Kumar Singh
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
A spatial outlier is a spatially referenced object whose non spatial attribute value is significantly different from the corresponding values in its spatial neighbourhood. In other words, a spatial outlier is a local instability, or an extreme observation which deviates significantly in its spatial neighbourhood, but may not be in the entire data set. In this paper, we have applied the well-known mean algorithm for detecting spatial outliers in the multiple attributes state wise crime data and predicted which states need more attention from the government so as to reduce crimes there. We have also done regression analysis between the …

The Academic Effects Of Chronic Exposure To Neighborhood Violence, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Agustina Laurito, Johanna Lacoe, Patrick Sharkey, Ingrid Gould Ellen
The Academic Effects Of Chronic Exposure To Neighborhood Violence, Amy Ellen Schwartz, Agustina Laurito, Johanna Lacoe, Patrick Sharkey, Ingrid Gould Ellen
Center for Policy Research
We estimate the causal effect of repeated exposure to violent crime on test scores in New York City. We use two distinct empirical strategies; value-added models linking student performance on standardized exams to violent crimes on a student’s residential block, and a regression discontinuity approach that identifies the acute effect of an additional crime exposure within a one-week window. Exposure to violent crime reduces academic performance. Value added models suggest the average effect is very small; approximately -0.01 standard deviations in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. RD models suggest a larger effect, particularly among children previously exposed. The marginal …

The Illinois Veterans Treatment Court Mandate: From Concept To Success, John Adams, Jaye Hobart, Mark Rosenberg
The Illinois Veterans Treatment Court Mandate: From Concept To Success, John Adams, Jaye Hobart, Mark Rosenberg
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
Veteran Treatment Courts in Illinois - The VTC Mandate In Illinois, several VTCs already exist. These courts have seemingly been successful in achieving the outcomes that matter to veterans and communities. Because of the preliminary success of these courts, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed House Bill 5003 (HB 5003) into law on August 14, 2016, which amends the Veterans and Servicemembers Court Treatment Act of 2010 by providing that each judicial circuit shall—rather than may—implement a VTC by January of 2018 (Public Act 099-0807). In addition to this legislation, in November of 2015, the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts …
Conflict And Cooperation: Western Economic Interests In Ottoman Iraq 1894-1914, Jameel N. Haque
Conflict And Cooperation: Western Economic Interests In Ottoman Iraq 1894-1914, Jameel N. Haque
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation investigates underutilized U.S. archival sources in order to discuss certain aspects of late Ottoman history in Baghdad and Basra, between 1894 and 1914. Since these sources have been underutilized, their inclusion will widen the scope of possible historical investigation in the study of Late Ottoman Baghdad and Basra. This research will suggest that, in this period, there was an expanding role/presence for America and Americans that is not currently reflected in the historiography. This should, of course, be qualified since Americans and American interests in the region, although on the increase, were still significantly less than those of …

Can Noncompliant Behavior Explain Racial/Ethnic Disparities In The Use Of Force By The Nypd? An Econometric Analysis Of New York's Stop-And-Frisk, Omari-Khalid Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
This paper seeks to analyze spatiotemporal variations in NYPD policing patterns in an attempt to identify the causal mechanism(s) driving the observed racial/ethnic disparities; specifically, it addresses questions of how changing neighborhood demographics influence the decision-making of NYPD officers/precincts as it relates to their controversial Stop-and-Frisk policy.

The Relationship Between Executive Dysfunction And Criminality In Forensic Psychiatric And Correctional Populations, Erin J. Shumlich
The Relationship Between Executive Dysfunction And Criminality In Forensic Psychiatric And Correctional Populations, Erin J. Shumlich
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Crime has immense social and economic impact. Understanding and treating the underlying factors of criminal behavior is essential to creating an overall safer society. Deficits in executive functioning — inhibition, cognitive shifting, and working memory — have been implicated as a factor contributing to criminal behavior. Method: Manuscript 1 examines the relationship between executive dysfunction and severity and frequency of criminal behavior of forensic psychiatric patients, individuals who committed crime under the influence of a severe mental disorder. Manuscript 2 compares the executive functioning of two unique criminal populations — forensic psychiatric patients and correctional offenders. Results: Poorer executive functioning …
