Prisoner Resistance In The Auschwitz And Buchenwald Concentration Camps, Regina Coffey

A great deal has been written about the Holocaust and about resistance organizations that formed in the concentration camps. Much of this literature, however, tends to focus on the contributions of a particular group of prisoners rather than on the many groups that came together to form these organizations. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to examine the resistance organizations in Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps using firsthand accounts and to come to a conclusion on how cooperation between different groups of prisoners affected the overall effectiveness of these resistance organizations.

Topf & Sons designed, built and perfected the crematoria at the Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Belzec, Dachau, Mauthausen and Gusen camps. The leaflet lists their slogan (“Performance decides”) and various product lines: smokestacks, furnaces, etc. Verso is a company description. Topf speaks glowingly about their new leadership and spirit since 1933, the Third Reich’s first year.

Information Provided by Michael D. Bulmash: Frauen Konzentrationslager (FKL) Auschwitz/ Women’s Concentration Camp Auschwitz prisoner mail on camp stationery card. FKL Auschwitz was established as a subcamp of Frauen-Konzentrationslager Ravensbrueck housed at Auschwitz before becoming integrated with the Auschwitz camp proper at Birkenau (Auschwitz II). Stamp has been removed (censors did this to check for hidden messages) and another, uncanceled Mohemia Moravia applied. FKL imprinted covers are extremely scarce.

In the aftermath of national or international tragedies, appeals for action such as, “Never Forget” or “Never Again” are ubiquitous. Theodor Adorno makes a similar call in the wake of the Holocaust, proclaiming that all education should be focused on the prevention of another genocide. While most would agree with such a statement, practically how do we respond to such a call, specifically in light of Adorno’s work? Answering this question is at the heart of this project and I argue that imaginative memorials can fulfill Adorno’s criteria for post-Auschwitz education. From Kristallnacht in November 1938 to the collapse of the Nazi Regime in May 1945, they relied heavily on each other and their instincts to discover ways to survive while in the ghettos, labor camps, and partisan units, if they managed to escape and head for the forests. Frontstalag (Frontstammlager) 111 Drancy censored lettersheet sent by Jewish POW Solomon Narinsky to his wife Sonia, in Frontstalag 142, Besancon. Initially a POW camp holding North African colonial POWs, Frontstalag 111 also held 79 British prisoners and foreign laborers who were in France. Solomon Narinsky was a renowned photographer who had at this time a photography studio in Paris. The Arrow Cross was the Hungarian fascist party and movement established by Ferenc Szalasi. Like the Nazis, they were strongly nationalistic and militantly opposed to Communism and Jews. Also like the Nazis, they were advocates of agriculture. Szalasi led the Hungarian government after Miklos Horthy was dismissed by the Nazis. How to speak of the agency of the oppressed to harm others in times of atrocity? This article juxtaposes Holocaust literature (Levi, Frankl, Kertesz, Ka-Tzetnik) with Holocaust judging (the Kapo collaborator trials in Israel). It does so didactically to interrogate international criminal law’s interaction with former child soldier Dominic Ongwen, currently awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court.
