The Effect Of Exercise On Cognitive Function As Measured By Impact Protocol: Aerobic Vs. Anaerobic, John Brutvan Ma, Atc, Kimberly S. Peer Edd, Atc, Fnata, Jacob E. Barkley Phd, Jay Jonas Ms, Atc

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Background: Exercise has long played a critical role in the recovery from athletic injuries. Of recent, concussion research has escalated creating new insights into the treatment of and rehabilitation from concussion syndromes. As part of the concussion research, multiple uses of the ImPACT tool have evolved to measure cognitive function. However, combining the variables of cognitive improvement as measured by the ImPACT protocol with aerobic and anaerobic exercise has not been investigated. Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to assess the influence of acute bouts of aerobic versus resistance exercise on cognitive function of college-aged participants as measured …

The Physiological Profile Of Male Competitive And Recreational Surfers, James Furness, Wayne Hing, Jeremy M Sheppard, Sean Newcomer, Ben Schram, Mike Climstein Sep 2016

The Physiological Profile Of Male Competitive And Recreational Surfers, James Furness, Wayne Hing, Jeremy M Sheppard, Sean Newcomer, Ben Schram, Mike Climstein

Ben Schram

Surfing consists of both high and low intensity paddling of varying durations, utilizing both the aerobic and anaerobic systems. Surf specific physiological studies lack adequate group sample sizes and VO2peak values are yet to determine differences between competitive and recreational surfers. The purpose of this study was therefore to provide a comprehensive physiological profile of both recreational and competitive surfers. This multi-site study involved 62 male surfers, recreational (n = 47) and competitive (n = 15). Anthropometric measurements were conducted followed by DEXA, anaerobic testing and finally aerobic testing. VO2peak was significantly greater in competitive compared to recreational surfers (M …

Mesoporous Manganese Oxide Materials For Aerobic Oxidation Reactions, Sourav Biswas Sep 2016

Mesoporous Manganese Oxide Materials For Aerobic Oxidation Reactions, Sourav Biswas

Doctoral Dissertations

The thesis presented here is focused on fabricating thermally stable and tunable mesoporous manganese oxide materials for catalytic aerobic oxidation reactions. From the viewpoint of green chemistry, the design of novel methodologies for oxidation, preferably under aerobic atmospheric condition, without any additives is highly desirable. Being motivated by advances in catalytic materials as fundamental pillars of ‘green chemistry’, my research is devoted to designing of useful materials in oxidative catalysis that may serve the purpose of sustainable energy sources in harmony with the environment and nature. The five chapters provided here will discuss the importance of catalytic oxidation reactions, synthesis, …

Sensitivity Of The Vasoactive Range In Determining Aerobic Fitness, Preston L. Bell May 2016

Sensitivity Of The Vasoactive Range In Determining Aerobic Fitness, Preston L. Bell

Honors Theses

Previous work has demonstrated a direct relationship between aerobic fitness and indices of vasodilatory function (i.e., Flow-mediated Dilation; FMD). Importantly, recent evidence suggests that vasoconstrictor function to reductions in blood flow (i.e., Low-Flow Mediated Constriction; L-FMC), as well as during sympatho-excitation (i.e., Cold Pressor Test), may compliment the FMD measure, thus, providing an overall range of vascular responsiveness. The purpose of this thesis project was to test the hypothesis that vasoactive range indices (peak vasodilation + nadir vasoconstriction) are sensitive to aerobic fitness levels in healthy young men. Fourteen males (age: 22±4 yrs) were recruited, and divided evenly into a …

Effect Of Low Or High Intensity Aerobic Exercise And The Association To Cardiovascular Halth Conditions For College-Aged Students, Kenechukwu Onwubuya, Enrique Castillo Feb 2016

Effect Of Low Or High Intensity Aerobic Exercise And The Association To Cardiovascular Halth Conditions For College-Aged Students, Kenechukwu Onwubuya, Enrique Castillo

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of low or high intensity aerobic exercise over a three-week intervention period, and the relationship to physiological responses before and after exercise for college aged students. Subjects included were male and female (n=7). Measures were the following: Height (cm), weight (kg), blood pressure (mmHg), heart rate (b* min.-1) and maximal oxygen consumption (ml*kg-1*min.-1). Subjects were classified as physically active or inactive college-aged students. The participants performed a volitional fatigue test on a treadmill ergometer for both the pre and post-test by utilizing the Bruce …

Relationship Between Individualized Training Impulse And Aerobic Fitness Measures In Hurling Players Across A Training Period, Shane Malone, Kieran Collins Jan 2016

Relationship Between Individualized Training Impulse And Aerobic Fitness Measures In Hurling Players Across A Training Period, Shane Malone, Kieran Collins

Articles

The current study examined the association between individual internal training load (individualized training impulse, iTRIMP) and aerobic fitness variables in male hurling players. Twenty hurling players (age, 25.5 ± 3.2 years; height, 178.9 ± 3.2 cm; body mass, 78.5 ± 4.5 kg) performed treadmill testing for V[Combining Dot Above]O2max, running economy (RE), and the speed at blood lactate concentrations of 2 mmol·L (S2) and 4 mmol·L (S4) on separate occasions before and after an 8-week training period. The Yo-Yo intermittent recovery (Yo-YoIR1, Yo-YoIR2) test performance were also assessed before and after the training period. Individualized training impulse was calculated using …

Assessment Of Competitive Requirements, Repeated Sprint Paddle Ability And Trainability Of Paddling Performance In Surfers, Oliver Farley Jan 2016

Assessment Of Competitive Requirements, Repeated Sprint Paddle Ability And Trainability Of Paddling Performance In Surfers, Oliver Farley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Studies examining the physical demands of surfing, the physiological characteristics of surfers, training techniques and various indices important to surfing performance are limited and characterised by methodological discrepancies. This thesis consists of five studies to assess the competitive requirements, test specific repeat sprint fitness and the trainability of sprint paddling in surfers.

Initially an understanding of surfing movement patterns and a determination of the reliability and validity of custom-made GPS units was established (SurfTraX, Gold Coast, Australia) (Study 1: The validity and inter-unit reliability of custom-made SurfTraX GPS units and use during surfing). Durations, intensities, external loads and velocity …
