Folklore And Children’S Literature: A Content Analysis Of The De Grummond Children’S Literature Collection, Colleen E. Smith Dec 2015

Folklore And Children’S Literature: A Content Analysis Of The De Grummond Children’S Literature Collection, Colleen E. Smith

SLIS Connecting

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Many …

The Rhetoric Of Law And The Epistle To The Hebrews, Theodore A. Holt Iv Dec 2015

The Rhetoric Of Law And The Epistle To The Hebrews, Theodore A. Holt Iv

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Epistle to the Hebrews demonstrates a complex of what scholars label technical legal terms. Enlisting a series of word studies, this thesis attempts to uncover where the author learned the terminology in order to understand more about the anonymous author and the theology of the Epistle to the Hebrews. This thesis examines terms in Heb 2:2-4; 6:13-18; 7:11-19; 8:13; 9:15-18; 10:9.

Technology Pedagogy And Content In Web-Based Language Instruction For Secondary Vocational Students, Eleni Papantoniou, Thanasis Hadzilacos Nov 2015

Technology Pedagogy And Content In Web-Based Language Instruction For Secondary Vocational Students, Eleni Papantoniou, Thanasis Hadzilacos

Eleni Papantoniou

Students in vocational schools in Greece are less motivated and have low performance in courses demanding academic skills, like language learning with reading and writing tasks (e.g. essay writing). If they were asked, they would say that they prefer to do things rather than study or get involved in traditional classroom language activities. School cannot provide them with language materials and methodology adjusted to their needs. Language teaching and learning is an academic task-oriented subject and teachers find it extremely difficult to arise their students' interest. So, from this point of view there is a gap between need and supply. …

A Rationale For Incorporating Dystopian Literature Into Introductory Speaking Courses, James P. Dimock, Chad Kuyper, Peggy Dimock Nov 2015

A Rationale For Incorporating Dystopian Literature Into Introductory Speaking Courses, James P. Dimock, Chad Kuyper, Peggy Dimock

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Since Aristotle, teachers of public speaking have argued that an understanding of the audience’s beliefs, values, and assumptions about the world are the key to effective, persuasive speaking. All too often, however, public speaking courses either avoid audience analysis or focus on superficial details of the audience demographics. This paper makes the argument that by reading and discussing novels, students can develop an appreciation of their classmates as audience members and that dystopian fiction is especially well-suited to developing speech ideas that connect public speaking with the world outside the classroom. Teaching suggestions and lesson plans are included.

Current Concepts On Drug Abuse And Dependence, Daniela Luiza Baconi, Anne-Marie Ciobanu, Ana Maria Vlăsceanu, Oana Denisa Cobani, Carolina Negrei, Cristian Bălălău

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Drug addiction is a complex disease characterized by compulsive and uncontrollable desire to seek and consume the drug. In time, drug-related terminology has undergone many changes, arising from the deepening of the mechanisms of action, but also about the need for a greater precision in the definition.

Drug dependence can be assigned not only to pharmacological effects of the drugs of abuse, but also to their interaction with each particular neurological and psychological constitution. The research on the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction processes allows both a better understanding of current pharmacotherapy and the development of new treatment strategies in drug …

Interactive Pavillions: Responsive Transformation Of Structure Systems, Xiangru Chen

Architecture Thesis Prep

With the personal interest in tectonic design and kinetic structure arts. This study is aimed to explore the application of interactive technology in the transformation of the structure system in a tectonic architecture design--- to cross the gap between static tectonic design and kinetic structure in small scale. The responsive pavilion will sense and respond to the verification of gravity loads (for occupancy detection) and lights (for solar energy), with the spatial transformation of the entire structure system. As a result, the form of the architecture will follow the function. The responsive pavilion will spatially respond to the varied occupancy …

Public Choice Economics Consistent With A Biblical Worldview, Jeffrey E. Haymond Nov 2015

Public Choice Economics Consistent With A Biblical Worldview, Jeffrey E. Haymond

Business Administration Faculty Presentations

Public choice economics is often criticized by its critics not primarily for its lack of empirical content, but more often from its incomplete view of human nature; i.e., its “cynicism.” Even supporters seem to implicitly accept the critics’ view of public choice as only allowing a view of government from a selfish perspective. In this article, I will examine the biblical basis for the fundamental assumption of public choice: that individuals act according to their self-interest, whether in the public or the private sector. I will argue that a true view of human nature will include the biblical view of …

Cyprus, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld Oct 2015

Cyprus, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Nicolle E Hirshfeld

Strabo described Cyprus as “second to none of the islands of the Mediterranean: it is rich in wine and oil, produces grain in abundance and possesses extensive copper mines.…” (14.6.5). Geographical proximity placed Cyprus within the orbit of the Levant; currents and winds situated the island in the flow of peoples and ideas between the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean. But at the same time, Cyprus’ insularity and large size fostered idiosyncratic developments. This tension—between native and imported ideas, and invention in a middle ground—informs studies of ancient Cyprus.

Five Characteristics From Past American Awakenings That God Can Use To Produce Another One Today, John Cole Oct 2015

Five Characteristics From Past American Awakenings That God Can Use To Produce Another One Today, John Cole

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The American Southern Baptist church and society in the twenty first century has not experienced a movement by the Lord resulting in mass conversions to Him, nationwide, in a Great Awakening for 150 years. America experienced two awakenings in her first century as a country. This thesis seeks to answer the questions: What were five characteristics in churches of America prior to Spiritual Awakenings in her first century? How can God replicate these today? Scripture teaches that it is imperative for all Christians to help fulfill the great commission. This thesis will examine and provide a possible resolution, based on …

Reconsidering Fibich’S Šárka: Myth, Gender, And The Construction Of A Nation, Barbora Gregusova Sep 2015

Reconsidering Fibich’S Šárka: Myth, Gender, And The Construction Of A Nation, Barbora Gregusova

Music ETDs

This work reassesses the standard consensus of Zdeněk Fibich’s (1850-1900) compositional aesthetic in his most popular opera Šárka (1896). Through the use of an interdisciplinary analysis, I set out a new interpretation. I evaluate the location of the composer’s output on the nationalistic-cosmopolitan continuum through comparisons with Smetana’s and Wagner’s compositional tendencies, respectively. I correlate Fibich’s place in the Czech political and social situations as well as conceptions of folk music with the role and depiction of gender. A feminist reading of the opera in light of Fibich’s musical treatment deemphasizes the composer’s cosmopolitan side and, contrary to the popular …

Physician Assistant Students' Perceptions Of Mental Illness: A Correlational Study Of Empathy, Attitudes, And Stigma Levels, Juliann M. Garza Aug 2015

Physician Assistant Students' Perceptions Of Mental Illness: A Correlational Study Of Empathy, Attitudes, And Stigma Levels, Juliann M. Garza

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Physician assistant students’ perceptions and attitudes towards mental illness were examined in relation to their empathy levels. The theoretical frameworks of stigma and labeling were explored and examined through the use of surveys and questionnaires to assess prior attitudes and beliefs about individuals with a mental illness. Based on a multiple-regression model and multi-way analysis of variance, this study showed a statistical significance between an individual’s empathy levels and their stigmatization towards mental illness. In addition, the results of this study identified significant relationships between gender and race in terms of empathy. Implications of this study could have far-reaching effects …

He Started The Whole World Singing A Song, Brian R. Cates Jun 2015

He Started The Whole World Singing A Song, Brian R. Cates

Musical Offerings

Throughout history, music has moved people in powerful ways, so much so that, at times, it leaves them speechless. They realize that it is a song, full of notes and rhythms, yet at the same time, it makes them become profoundly aware that there is something more, humming just below the surface. My presentation seeks to enter into this music moment by asking why these types of moments even occur. Does music speak or communicate? If so, does it communicate something meaningful and significant? What is the mechanism by which music conveys this meaning? How can this meaning be …

Asylia And Peer Polity Interaction In The Hellenistic Period, Kathleen Ann Kirsch Jun 2015

Asylia And Peer Polity Interaction In The Hellenistic Period, Kathleen Ann Kirsch

Master's Theses

This thesis proposes that the Peer Polity Interaction Theory can explain the spread of the civic title of territorial asylia (inviolability) in the Hellenistic period. The Greeks had always considered sacred space to be inviolable; thus there was no apparent need to acquire a separate title of inviolability. During the Hellenistic period, however, ambassadors canvassed the Greek world for recognition of asylia, and acceptances were inscribed in stone and placed in highly visible places. It was clearly a particularly sought after title.

By surveying the primary epigraphic and numismatic sources and examining asylia in the context of the Peer Polity …

Demystifying Open Access Workshop, Rose Fortier, Heather G. James, Martha G. Jermé, Patricia Berge, Rosemary Del Toro

Library Events and Research Institutes

Among the avenues for sharing research and scholarship, open access journals offer an increasingly viable and important option. However, it can be challenging not only to identify these journals but also to evaluate their quality and reach, as well as to weigh the benefits of publishing in them.

To help demystify this process, Raynor Memorial Libraries offered a workshop on evaluating open access journals. Aimed at faculty, graduate students, and others interested in publishing their academic work, the workshop offered an overview of current open access options for sharing research, criteria to help assess the rigor and reliability of open …

Modern Spoken Coptic And Community Negotiation Of Linguistic Authenticity, Jeremy Toomey May 2015

Modern Spoken Coptic And Community Negotiation Of Linguistic Authenticity, Jeremy Toomey

Linguistics ETDs

The pronunciation of the Coptic language in the liturgies of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria according to the Greco-Bohairic and Old Bohairic pronunciation standards is investigated, together with the sociolinguistic narratives constructed by two Coptic communities surrounding the use of either standard. Field recordings of the liturgy as recited according to both standards are analyzed in order to describe the phonology of the standards, and interviews with users of both standards are analyzed in order to describe the language attitudes of the users of the language. Points of similarity and difference between the narratives constructed by users of the …

A Forensics Software Toolkit For Dna Steganalysis., Marc Bjoern Beck May 2015

A Forensics Software Toolkit For Dna Steganalysis., Marc Bjoern Beck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in genetic engineering have allowed the insertion of artificial DNA strands into the living cells of organisms. Several methods have been developed to insert information into a DNA sequence for the purpose of data storage, watermarking, or communication of secret messages. The ability to detect, extract, and decode messages from DNA is important for forensic data collection and for data security. We have developed a software toolkit that is able to detect the presence of a hidden message within a DNA sequence, extract that message, and then decode it. The toolkit is able to detect, extract, and decode …

Overcoming Church Euthanasia: A Plan To Revitalize Dead And Dying Churches In The Southern Baptist Convention, Wayne E. Rogers May 2015

Overcoming Church Euthanasia: A Plan To Revitalize Dead And Dying Churches In The Southern Baptist Convention, Wayne E. Rogers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This thesis will examine the problem of dead and dying churches in the Southern Baptist Convention. Membership in more than seventy-percent of churches in North America has plateaued or is declining according to the North American Mission Board. Rather than just starting new churches, this thesis will present an option to revitalize dead and dying churches in order to reverse this trend. The aim of this thesis is to promote the historical Southern Baptists plan which will help Southern Baptists regain historical parameters and goals when revitalizing dead or dying churches. The thesis will cite existing quantitative and qualitative data, …

Les Chansons De Bilitis: A Symbiotic Collaboration Between Two Artists Claude Debussy And Pierre Louys With An Annotated Performance Guide And Original Translations, Carmella Tian Ming Cao May 2015

Les Chansons De Bilitis: A Symbiotic Collaboration Between Two Artists Claude Debussy And Pierre Louys With An Annotated Performance Guide And Original Translations, Carmella Tian Ming Cao

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This document examines Claude Debussy’s Les Chansons de Bilitis to understand how Debussy, in his musical settings reflects the literary texts of Bilitis written by Pierre Louÿs. The purpose is to gain insight into the interdisciplinary collaborations among artists in fin-de-siècle France. Many of Debussy’s most famous pieces, such as Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, were inspired by poetry. In this document I contend that Les Chansons de Bilitis could play a more meaningful role within the repertoire of the flute canon. This piece was composed in 1901 with a unique instrumentation of two flutes, two harps, celesta, and female …

St. John Chrysostom's And Philip Melanchthon's Views Of Justification (Δικαιωσις) In St. Paul's Epistles, With Special Attention To How Their Respective Intellectual Environments Influenced Their Interpretations, Cameron Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objective of this thesis is to provide insights into why John Chrysostom (349- 407 CE), who was the most prolific scriptural commentator in early, Eastern Christianity, understood the core theological concept of justification differently than Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560 CE), who was the first, and one of the most influential, theologians of the Protestant Reformation. Furthermore, because of their prominent positions within their respective faith movements, their perspectives reveal broader implications regarding how Christians within their respective periods and geographical locations were interpreting Christian scripture, and how the ideological currents were influencing their interpretations.

By understanding what led Chrysostom and …
